A step-by-step tutorial on how to join knitting in the round without a gap, jog or holes - no matter if you are using double-pointed knitting needles or circular needles.
Read the full tutorial here: nimble-needles.com/tutorials/...
My knitting needles: amzn.to/3pHJ69c
My yarn: bit.ly/354ESkw
*Note: As an Etsy & Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
When knitting tubular projects, the beginning is often the most difficult as you need to join the knitting in the round. No matter if you are using double-pointed or circular needles, you often end up twisting your stitches, you may create gaps, holes, or jogs, and things may initially not look perfect. This tutorial is meant to show you a couple of simple techniques to fix these problems.
First, I'll show you a super invisible method without a gap, jogs or holes for dpns, and in the second part I'll show you the very same method using circular needles and magic loop.
On top of that, I show you how to join in the round a bit later and after having knit 3-4 rounds in case you always end up twisting your cast on edge. And at the very end of the video I have two tips for fixing gaps by grafting stitches and a very neat option to join in the round that also weaves in the tail in the same breath.
Chapters:
0:00 Introduction to joining knitting in the round
1:28 Joining knitting in the round on double-pointed knitting needles
6:32 Joining knitting in the round on circular needles/magic loop
9:30 Knitting 3-4 rows flat before joining in the round
13:15 Grafting stitches to bridge the gap
14:32 All-in-one solution without a gap, jog or weaving in ends

Hello there. hope you are doing well. So i was trying to do lace and I ran into some major difficulties - like not knowing what to do when I make a mistake. With regular knitting with knits and purls, I can ladder down or rip back my work a few rows and im good to go. but with lace .....im kinda stuck. There are all these yarn overs and knit togethers and stuff. So I dont know what im gonna do. So for now, I am selecting patterns that have what I call "rest" rows. That means that pattern repeats have like one or two rows of just knits and purls with nothing fancy going on. So If I make a mistake I can rip back to those rows and take it from there. But someday I would like to knit those patterns which have like overlapping leaves and whatnot (with no rest rows). But I want to know how to correct mistakes in them. I learnt about "lifelines". But, they done seem to work for those patterns.Dunno, maybe I am doing them wrong. it would be really helpful if you could do a video on that, or direct me to some good videos or websites that I can educate myself with. Thanks :)

@@NimbleNeedles Thanks for the reply. I know how to correct mistakes in regular knitting, i was getting confused by the yarn overs and stuff. I had to redo a section but I was trying to figure out if there was a way to avoid that in case I want to do a larger section. Anyway. Ill still check out that video, maybe something in there will help

You are my HERO Thank You!!! I will go watch your other videos when my fingers need a break.

Hello Norman, I've knit socks for awhile and love the tip about slipping that first stitch to the other needle and pulling a stitch over it to join the round. Will remove the stress I have starting a new sock:) An aside: Just notice something about picking stitches that has me rethinking about using that technique now. When i tried picking, it created too tight a stitch. What I noticed here, is that it's not the picking causing my issue, it was that I did not allow enough space between needles when slipping the new stitch off the needle, hence my knitting was too tight. Another thank you :)

yep, lace is on my list. As for nova platina interchangeable. they are my personal favorite. very fast to knit and rather cheap. they won't last a lifetime, tho.

I was just wondering about this today! I am making hats and always get this one stich that is crooked and open and I cover it with a tag, but I would love a full video on this technique for circular needles using bulky yarn.

While I will certainly tackle circular needles, I personally almost never use bulky yarn so I will probably have to disappoint you on that part ^^

I pull the short piece through the opposite needle, wrap it around to the knit side pull snug and knit the 2 pieces of yarn into the pattern a few knits. no more hole or separation.

Hello Norman, thank you so much for sharing your knitting wisdom! I discovered your channel just a few days ago and I've learned so much. I started my current project over because I wanted to use some of the techniques I learned from you, and it's already looking much better. Bless you for the wonderful work you are doing here!

This is brilliant. I have to redistribute the first stitch back to the first needle though. I'm too ocd to end up with 7 8 8 9 or in my case 18 19 19 20 for your glove pattern 😂

One thing on the first method that was not mentioned that took me a minute to figure out on my own, the way the video shows does NOT keep the stitches per needle even after joining. The extra stitch you cast on NEEDS to be accounted for on the first needle you start slipping stitches with to divide them. For example, the pattern I'm working calls for 6 stitches on the first needle, 8 on the second, and leaving 6 on the third. The first time I followed this video, I did 6, then 8, which left my 7 on the original cast on needle. Once I did the invisible join, I had 5, 8, and 7, because the join MOVES a stitch from the original to the first dividing needle. Had to start over. So make sure your extra stitch is counted on that first needle you start dividing the stitches with.

sorry about that. I thought that it was kind of obvious that if you move one stitch there is one stitch less. But yeah, you absolutely have to calculate that in :)

Hiya Norman! Thanks for the in-depth tutorial, your dedication and attention to detail is in a class of its own 😊 I'm wondering, does anyone know if you can knit bigger items such as sweaters on 8" DPNs or are they just for smaller projects like socks?

that used to be the only way for the generations before. However, they typically used even longer wires (say 10").
