In this video, I help you understand the difference between a journal and a diary, commonplace book, compendium, book of silioques, catch all, and pocket notebook. Then I lay out three key features for actually doing philosophy or thinking like a philosopher. Then I help you journal like a philosopher by applying these essential features to journaling to help you keep a deep thinking philosophy journal. Enjoy!

I used to write diaries at the age of 9... And all I write is just a bunch of negative emotions because as a kid, I was neglected by my parents, and I don't really get any attention... And when I was 9 I used to think about death. Because I really don't feel like I exist (I feel abnormal as a kid). But now I'm 16, all my life I dedicated to my writings. I started writing journals at the age of 13.. Instead of writing negative emotions I write positive ones, and it really helped me a lot.. Now I'm 16, I'm planning of having an argument journal because I have a lot of arguments in my head.. Just mentally curious about a lot of things... This really helped me inspired and motivated to write more thank you so much ❤

Very inspiring. I don't know what you would call it, but for the past 4 years I've kept journals I refer to as my "thought books" (to which my friends snicker at the name). They're essentially written collections of whatever pops in my head at the time. Be it poems, dialogue, song ideas/lyrics, love letters, journal entries, philosophical musings, quotes, etc. Any idea worth writing down will be in those books. Sure they could be more organized, but I've found them to be more interesting to read back because of the variety. I'd recommend trying it out for anyone who finds straight journal and poetry books to be too intimidating

I love the messiness of your writing and notesbooks. I used to bullet journal and it always stressed me to see other people with amazingly beautiful notebooks. I can't really draw and I don't want to spend hours to make it look nice, so I stopped. It's kind of stupid but I feel like seeing your notebooks gives me a permisson to get rid of my washi tape and ruler and not to worry how my notebooks looks like.
@ParkerNotes
@ParkerNotes 9 ай бұрын
Yes! Haha you have permission. It's your tool! It's primary use is not to show off on social media. So first things first, you gotta be able to use it as a tool, if that means less than perfect handwriting then so be it as long as the tool works well for you 💪
@pinkvalentino
@pinkvalentino 9 ай бұрын
Omg same!!! I spent days, weeks on stupid drawings, coloring etc so my bullet looked aesthetic and IG style. I wasted so much time on this instead of doing the actual work. The messiness is more appealing to me and you focus on what is the most important
@providence9856
@providence9856 7 ай бұрын
Omg. So agree. I was to the point that I couldn't even break into a new journal for fear of messing it up with my handwriting and drawing. Now I know that it doesn't have to look perfect. In fact, the messy handwriting reminds me of writers of old with all their scribbles but great thoughts. It has Personality of a human being not perfection of PowerPoint presentations.

I have a Common Place notebook that I carry with me everywhere. I write down thoughts, ideas, quotes, things to remember, even recipes from a friend. I can transfer them (like the recipes), write about them in my journal, etc. I highlight things I want to repeatedly think about it and have an impact on my day. I have a Bullet Journal of sorts where I plan my day, often using time blocking to put all errands together, phone calls, and Deep Thinking for writing. Thanks for helpful video. I have a section for books, podcasts, movies... I also have a section for my Future Log and ideas for writing on Medium.

I remember reading how Ludwig Von Beethoven would take daily walks in the park near his home. While taking his daily walks he would get inspirational musical stanzas. He would return to his home and write these stanzas in a notebook and use some of these stanzas composing his music. Upon his death there were hundreds of these notebooks. This method can be used in a number of different ways.

I completely understand the separate books for different things… it’s just how some of our brains work.. I also enjoy compartmentalizing what goes into my journals. I remember looking at the notebooks section in a store, and my mom (who knows I am a notebook dragon), asking, “Are you out of paper?” And I told her, “That’s hardly the point.” 😂

About 10 years ago I used to write a notebooks or random pieces of paper, and I loved reading them and seeing the different things that I thought of. But then one day I decided to digitalize everything. It just seemed much simpler for reorganizing for keeping things. And I've been doing that for 10 years. I have different documents for random quotes that I like or from things that come from myself. But it's not the same. And there is a uniqueness when you write something and your own handwriting. Unfortunately I have damage in my hands so My writing is very hard to read. Now that I use stuff digitally speech to text works but there's a lot of errors there as well. I like the organization of digital journaling. My pocket notebook is basically my phone. But I do like the personalization of a hand notebook. Trying to think of how I could change things and incorporate stuff again in one way or another

Park, you've literally changed my life. I've always been very notebook-oriented, but I forced myself to stick to digital mediums as they were supposed to be more "efficient". But does that even matter when you don't even use those commonplaces you've set up in Obsidian or Notion? Since I found your channel, around 1 month ago, I've implemented basically all the notebook types you show here, plus others I deemed necessary for my personal use. You present ideas I haven't seen around here on YT, at least not so well explained. Not like I'm too much into the YT notebooks niche, I confess, as I find it sort of repetitive, yet certain videos of yours have been revealing and a good watch. So far, I already can see results in my thinking process and depth, and how I propose more valuable thoughts/questions/ideas. Unlike digital mediums, using notebooks is the perfect fit for me; I carry them around all the time, like a baby carries their toys. I've rewatched this video many, many times, just like your recent pocket notebooks video (also amazing). I can't wait for your video on commonplace books. I hope it's very informative and surely is interesting.

I'm a writer and I keep a personal daily diary, I realised I'm keeping a 'diary' by your definition,but I have been keeping a 'journal' by saving different Word documents with my ideas and arguments on hoping to eventually write an essay.🤷🏽 This video has helped me learn what I've been doing for the past year,and now I'm going to transfer all the blank word documents with bullet points on into a 'deep thinking journal', then write the essay 🙌🏽. 🤔 I might need a 'catch all notebook' too, so I can stop using the Word documents. You know, I have so many notebooks 😆 and pens 😳. If you ever read this ,thank you and love from Europe 🌍 you have helped me get clear in my mind over what I've been doing for so long and how to do it better.💯

I probably won't keep this many books. For me it would just get too overwhelming characterizing everything. I did that with my drawing books and just categorising everything and it just made me stop drawing in those completely. I'm not saying you shouldn't keep these many books but rather that they just don't work for me. Tho I'm definitely gonna buy a diary and a journal. Cuz as you say, I don't get difficult thoughts every single day abt why I'm feeling this or feeling lost in life.tho they come by atleast twice a week. So gonna just keep a diary for everyday writing and just how I felt and what I shoulve done better. And a journal for ideas I have, why do I do this, why am I like this.

My present setup for a thoughtbook: A4, checkered paper, 4 columns on each double page, indented text / outline for notes, plus diagrams plus mind maps, plus footnotes plus miscellaneous remarks and spontaneous ideas in column 4. For stimuli-driven brainstorming, 2 or 3 or 4 prefab boxes in each column, each box with an idea stimulus as a writing prompt and the option to jump between boxes. Moreover, a large modular set of thinking tools on a corkboard in front of my desk - how to set a focus for the next "unit of thinking", how to ask questions, how to reflect, how to identify obstacles, how to generate new ideas, how to criticize, how to view things from new perspectives and lots of other stimuli.

I, too, am fascinated by AI. I'm a cybersecurity professional and am exploring the moral/ethical implications of creator bias in model training and hallucinations. I think getting these thoughts out of my head onto paper would help me greatly. Not to mention how models can be attacked by malicious actors, e.g., posioning. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on AI and have the AI and God podcast episode in my queue. Appreciate ya!

This is awesome! I'm really glad to have you in the audience. Means I can drop some more technical type stuff in here and there and know someone will appreciate it! I'm really interested in and terrifying by adversarial attacks where someone exploits the goofy problems that arise from deep neural nets only working with syntax and not understanding what's going on. Like changing a pixel in a picture and throwing the whole system off even though the picture looks exactly the same to the human eye. Scary stuff!

7 months ago I bought a planner b/c it was the nightmare before christmas themed and it was on clearance. To say it has changed my life is a bit of an understatement. So here I am, patiently waiting for my scheduled planner day to set up for 2024; struggling as i've realized I have graduated to 4 various writing books. One for wood working projects, one for daily planner, one for big feelings, and one for business related activities. After only a few months with my big feelings journal and well, lets be honest, I've already finished writing in one book and tucked away for my kids to find long after I am gone. I love having an area to get out all my big feelings, but SIR! here I am freaking ready to go break into wm on the one day of the year they are closed so that I can go get yet another book to write down all the philosophy ideas I have. I had no idea what a rabbit hole I would progress down by buying a simple planner on clearance.

i think ive been doing this, kinda of, my whole life without exactly realizing it. ive always made types of video game compendiums where ill have a part of a notebook dedicated to one game and it'll have spell info or boss info n things like that and the whole reason i do it is so i dont need anything else with me except the game and the notebook. if the net goes down or anything like that i have my notebook. if i somehow forget something in a game ive played a million times, i have my notebook. ive always wanted to expand from just video games but i never knew how to do it or what to do and this vid helped with that. i have a lot of empty notebooks from said video game writings too lol.

It’s stationery, not stationary. Stationery has to do with papers, commonly used in letter writing. Stationary means it doesn’t move; stays in one place (like an exercise bike).

Thank you so much. I am a late bloomer when it comes to processing myself through books. I love processing my thoughts and feelings. I rather spend time for wisdom than earning money. I am not ready to work, most especially in Sales because it seems that when one appreciates being a lover of wisdom, one would consider earning money and being a Lover of Gain - non sense for a while. I just don't need money for now since I really don't consume much. My family is feeding me, giving shelter and supports me in being an academic writer of Math. I can see value to my time when I study Maths, Philosophy and Psychology. Hence, I consider myself - a late bloomer as a lover of wisdom. What do you think? Why am I not a lover of money, lover of gain now that I have discovered the joy of reading, studying and writing (publishing Math vlogs and Math teaching materials). Thanks again for being a great KZfaq educator. It guides us aspiring Philosophers. God bless you always. #from Cebu, Philippines

Since I was 10 years old, I have enjoyed writing my diary and thoughts! Although with several breaks in between! In fact, I think that being written has another depth and beauty. However, I think that the hybrid mode is more effective as information is not lost. And it's more robust to find the records!
