On another note, my cousin uses kalkwasser on his ATO and he has a cheap power head on a timer, to keep it moving.
@TOMReefer3 жыл бұрын
Yes, my only issue with power heads and stirs for nano ATO’s is, they can potentially put too much kalkwasser at one time, and supper saturate, however I Know reefers do it like that. 👍🏻😊

Hey Tom, can you do a deep dive on the Mandarin you got? Over time I've gotten 2 Mandarins from Absolutely Fish (Clifton), not necessarily from Biota, and they have not survived in my 34gal. The last video you made was kind of lacking on info. I want so badly to keep them but I just don't have the heart to put them through it. I kept one for 7 months with Baby Brine Shrimp hatching daily, but not longer.
@TOMReefer3 жыл бұрын
Hi rixon, the only thing I can say, is the aquacultured mandarin from Sustainable Aquatics I received was eating their own hatchery diet .5m slow sinking pellet. I never had to deal with live pods or baby brine shrimp. That’s key. Most reef collected mandarins don’t survive. I don’t believe Absolutely Fish sells aquacultured mandarins? That’s really all you need. Sustainable Aquatics has a retail outlet called The Coral Reef in Tenn. try them 👍🏻

Have a great vacation Mr.Tom and family. I bought a 40 gallon breeder and a 20 gallon long at Petco dollar a gallon. Starting my new project. What do you think two AI prime HD 16‘s would be ok?
@TOMReefer3 жыл бұрын
Hey RG! Sounds great! You want about 18” per light unless you don’t mind your sides not getting that much par. Not sure of the length of either tank? But 18” per light is a decent rule 😃👍🏻
@WandWizardLLC3 жыл бұрын
36”x18”x16” I was thinking 2 AI prime HD 16s would work. That’s the same light you use right?
@Kriswendorf3 жыл бұрын
Get a kalk stirrer. Wont ever have to worry about pumps going bad
@TOMReefer3 жыл бұрын
Hey Kris, have thought about stirs, however, in small nanos they run the risk of super saturating your tank. Too much kalkwasser at one time for small tanks, especially if they evaporate water fast.
@Kriswendorf3 жыл бұрын
@@TOMReefer On my 20 gallon fusion i run kalk through a doser along with 2 part and acropower. Just run the tunze for top off. When i make my sat kalk solution i just mix it in a gallon jug, wait until it settles, then pour off the top into my dosing container. Keeps things cleaner and dont have to keep buying pumps. Some say it clogs the doser but i have not ever ran into that problem. Running through a doser also keeps my parameters more consistent.
@TOMReefer3 жыл бұрын
That’s a decent way to do it Kris 😊👍🏻

Maybe you already have a video on this, but thinking about buying a Waterbox 20g. Do you have a skimmer in the back? I saw the video of the refugium, which is great.. So I will be building a refugium on the back too. Did you do any other modification to the default model? Return pump still the same?
@TOMReefer3 жыл бұрын
Look for my “20 gallon reef tank set up tour”😊👍🏻I show the skimmer, called reef glass
@rudra76153 жыл бұрын
Interesting, I only have an AI prime.. Which doesn't just turn on, it goes through this slow ramp from off to the full intensity, over 30mins or so.. Kessil looks to just turn on? Doesn't have that ramp up, yet you prefer kessil over AI prime? Is it that much better? (I realise you have both kessil and aim prime over the 20g)
@TOMReefer3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rudra, I prefer AI prime over the Kessil . I have the AI prime on the 20 gallon and 10 gallon.. They also ramp like yours, however I feel the Kessil is a better fit for 5 gallons and the Pico tank, because of there size. The AI prime is a better light and way more control👍🏻 I use the A 80 to supplement blue and shimmer over the 20 gallon😊

@TOMReefer3 жыл бұрын
Hey Arthur, the AI is a step above the Kessil. Better control, better color control, (app) Kessil is good for smaller tanks 5 gallon and under. real good shimmer. 👍🏻

I have a 10 gallon tank that I want to put a pair of clownfish in, I would like to put some type of goby for the sandbed but can't find a good species. What would you recommend for that and for a clean up crew?
@TOMReefer3 жыл бұрын
Hi YellowThang123, a pair of clowns in a 10 might have issues of aggression toward any other fish. Even each other. Not at the beginning, but after they grow. A watchman goby could work.
@salty_potatoes78383 жыл бұрын
@@TOMReefer Thank you! And what would you recommend as a clean up crew? I was thinking maybe a cleaner or blood shrimp, a hermit crab, and two snails.

I always add hermit crabs and Astrea snails. 1 of each per 1 1/2 gallons 👍🏻

Wait so how do you keep a successful nano with high Phosphates?
@TOMReefer3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jed, 😃now it depends on what you think is high. I keep mine between 0.1. - 0.5, more towards 0.3 - 0.5. Have had no problems, however I keep a 0 -1 ppm nitrate. I believe it’s because of stability in all the parameters, so there’s no phosphate increase rapidly. 👍🏻
@TOMReefer3 жыл бұрын
That’s an experimental tank (10 gallon ) your talking about. I’m deliberately letting it grow. That tanks does have a rather high phosphate level 0.3. The level in the 20 gallon is almost the same. No hair algae at all. 👍🏻
