Hey Lucas! They are on from 6:30am - 9am and then turn off until they come back on from 4pm - 10:30pm. So they are off for seven hours during the day. I mostly do it because I want the lights to be on when I'm home and when I feed. I keep fairly easy plants though - crypts, anubis, wisteria, hornwort, water sprite, guppy grass and a couple different swords. Under those conditions I get heavy growth from the wisteria, hornwort and guppy grass (big surprise). Everything else grows slow, but nothing has died. I know you need the time with all those tanks! Haha

Nice video. I enjoy snails too (and really do not mind a little algae growth). Many types of algae are a real nuisance if they become established in our tanks. Great tips on keeping algae in check, your tanks speak for themselves. I believe establishing plants, with quality lighting, is also important to ‘out compete’ the algae for nutrients. Also, placement of the tank in a strategic location (like away from a windows light) will help greatly in allowing us to control the amount of light reaching the tank.

Low nutrient levels isn't easy when you keep fancy plants. I figured out that glass algae has something to do with phosphate levels, but I haven't quite cracked to code yet.

Well, I tried to add some snails: Mysetry Snails, and I will have to say one thing: if you want your anubias not to be eaten, keep away from the mystery snails. I dont know if this is a common problem, but at least for me, it bekame a big one, because I dont know what to do with those snails...
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 2 жыл бұрын
That's interesting. Our mystery snail breeding tank is filled with anubias and never had any issues. Snails will eat decaying leaves, but we actually use our mystery snail tank to clean off anubias leaves that are covered in algae.

How can calcium buildup on the glass be prevented? The glass turns white every week!
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 6 жыл бұрын
I typically use a razor blade and water. I know people who wipe it down with vinegar instead of water, but you have to make sure it doesn't wind up in the tank, so I stay away from it. All my tanks are covered, so water loss is a minimum. I combine that with weekly water changes and I don't have that problem too often.

It can be really hard if a tank is getting direct sun. Offer shade to the tank if possible or more frequent water changes to try and keep the nutrients down in the water. Also, maybe growing plants out of the filter.
