ABOUT US:
Oakes Daylilies is a family-owned daylily farm that's been in business for three generations. Our daylilies grow in home gardens, city parks and botanical gardens across the nation- including Hawaii and Canada. We are known in the industry as Daylily Experts and grow over 1000 varieties of daylilies on nearly 70 acres in East Tennessee. But over 50 years ago, we started just like you-with one daylily in a home garden.
.............................
FARM-FRESH TO YOU!
When it comes to daylily plants, bigger is better! All of the plants we ship will be three fans or larger - two or three times (or more) what you might receive from other companies. Larger plants get established faster and produce more blooms quicker.
All of your plants will be freshly dug when you order. The leaves are trimmed and the plants are washed and air-dried. Your daylilies will be out of the ground less than 48 hours before they’re headed your way.

Great information! I’m fortunate to live where my growing season is March to November. I used to limit myself to only rebloomers, but now that I have the space I’m going to just keep adding more varieties. Not only that, I get proliferations on daylilies such as So Lovely! Oakes Daylilies are the absolute best which is why I’ll only buy them from you 🦋

I've had a very strange daylily year. I don't know whether it is because of the December flash freeze or the extremely mild and rainy late spring/early summer here in zone 7B, N MS. A few usually prolific daylilies did not bloom at all, and I've had a couple that are not rebloomers that took a few weeks break and are blooming again.

According to many of our customers, it has been a strange summer every where. We are in zone 7a (East Tennessee) and we've had like we've had weather similar to you.

Does trimming off the spent scapes help rebloom?
@OakesDaylilies

Hi! Good question! Removing the spent scapes makes the plant look neater, but does not encourage rebloom.

I just started a little collection of these flowers and love them. When is the best time to apply a blooming fertilizer and i have my plants in a pot nyc zone 7b do these pots need protection in the winter? If so under what temp. Thanks
@OakesDaylilies
@OakesDaylilies Жыл бұрын
Better be careful! We got started with just a "little collection" and now look where we are! Ha! The best time to apply a blooming fertilizer is in the spring just before they begin to bud out, or at the time of planting. If you are in NYC, I probably wouldn't suggest a fertilizer now since you don't want to encourage tender new growth at this point in the season. As for winter care for potted daylilies... funny you should ask! We just filmed a video about that! Here's the link (hope it helps!) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kJOabKubqZ3Yj6s.html

Should you pinch the spent flowers to encourage reblooming?
@OakesDaylilies

No. Deadheading only makes the plant look neater. It doesn't encourage rebloom.

Does daylillies like full sun i notice yours are planted in the shade
@OakesDaylilies
@OakesDaylilies Ай бұрын
Daylilies do best when they can receive 6-8 hours of sun. I assume you are talking about the clip where we're discussing Adena Blizzard. It is planted near some trees and, depending on the sun's angle, can get some shade. It still gets more than 6 hours of sun, though.

Hi I am a new comer to your Lilies . Do you fertilize your Lilies
@OakesDaylilies
@OakesDaylilies 9 ай бұрын
Hi! Welcome! We fertilize our daylilies in the spring before they bud. If we are dividing clumps to help increase our stock, we fertilize those when we replant them. We don't usually fertilize in the fall unless they need it (and by "need it" we mean look like they could use a boost). Thanks for the question-- and for finding us!

Purple De Oro is a great reblooming purple daylily but it's tough for any daylily to beat Stella De Oro in terms of rebloom. She's the Queen of Rebloom for sure!

@@OakesDayliliesbut I did not hear you mention anything about the need to “dead head” the Stella d’Oro.
@OakesDaylilies
@OakesDaylilies 2 ай бұрын
@@john-robert1961 Good catch. I should probably mention something like that next time I talk about reblooming daylilies. The only time we dead head our daylilies is when we're taking pictures of them. (That's just because we think photos look better without dead blooms in them!) Reblooming daylilies will still rebloom if they're not deadheaded, but deadheading could increase rebloom. Does that make sense?
@john-robert1961
@john-robert1961 2 ай бұрын
@@OakesDaylilies yes, it sure does make sense. I just find that the leaves in the center of my Stella’s get brown around the beginning of July. I’m in Southern Indiana Zone 6. I used to remove those ovaries on them, but it gets to be exhausting after a while. One thing about these plants that I’ve noticed is that you can walk all over them. You could drive automobiles over them. You can bang them with a shovel and they still spring back to life with no problem. They are absolutely tough in that regard. One time, I lifted one out of the ground to throw it away, and just threw it on the ground in my back yard forgetting to throw it in the waste bin, and it rooted and bloomed and stayed there for about three years until I finally threw it away. Lol

@@john-robert1961 They're tough as nails-- one of the reasons why we love them! I have a story similar to yours: I was reworking the landscaping around my son's house a couple of winter's ago. I dug up some daylilies, threw them to the side and totally forgot about them until the next spring. They looked terrible because they'd been piled in a heap, completely exposed all winter, but I planted them and they bloomed just beautifully that summer.

What do you mean by "plenty of water?"
@OakesDaylilies
@OakesDaylilies Жыл бұрын
I guess I could have been more clear about that, huh? I meant 1"-2", 2 or 3 times a week depending on your rainfall, of course. Rainfall, obviously, counts. Thanks for asking! I'll try to be more clear with what I mean in future videos.

On my daylillies the leaves get brown after blooming
@OakesDaylilies
@OakesDaylilies Ай бұрын
That is normal. If it bugs you, you can gently tug on the brown foliage and it should easily come off in your hand. Some people choose to remove it, others prefer to leave it on. Either way is a-okay; it won't hurt the plant or affect future bloom either way.
@bethsmith1962

I've planted about a dozen daylilies in a spot that gets brutal north Georgia afternoon sun. Is it possible that they are getting cooked, or is it normal for the lifecycle to be so incredibly quick? I have a small yard, so I planted what I thought could survive/thrive in that location.
@OakesDaylilies
@OakesDaylilies Ай бұрын
We have lots of customers in zones 9, 10 and 11 and they plant daylilies because daylilies love the heat. I'm not sure how long your daylilies are blooming, but a daylily typically blooms for about 3 or 4 weeks each summer. If it's a reblooming variety, you'll get bloom beyond that. They do enjoy plenty of water, particularly during high summer, too.
