Discretely, but visibly make the Sign of the Cross. You needn’t be overly dramatic or say anything. Keep listening to them if that’s what your position calls for. The person could very well have no idea why you’re doing it. Eventually, they’ll ask and there’s your chance to explain in a respectful manner. Don’t make a big deal of it. Keep the topic on work or whatever task is at hand. Those of goodwill will accept the correction. People who fly into a rage, well, at least you know where they stand. Do your best to avoid them and if God’s honor calls for it, entirely separate yourself from them even if it means great sacrifice for you. If it’s an acquaintance or family member, you could try ‘three strikes and you’re out.’ It worked with a cousin of mine who didn’t practice the Faith and had a foul mouth because of her friends. She asked for my help in cleaning her car, and proceeded to use God’s Name in vain along with other profanities for no apparent reason. I let one outburst go, but when she did it again, I told her firmly, but kindly, to watch her tongue and why. I let her know matter-of-factly that if it happened a third time, I would be leaving as I had other errands to do that day. About ten minutes went by and she deliberately blasphemed to test me out. I said nothing, just turned off the shop vac, and departed the garage. She was speechless for a few seconds, then ran after me into the house where I retrieved my purse and coat, bid my aunt and uncle goodbye, got into my car and drove away. The entire household was in an uproar with her cussing me out, threatening to kill herself, my aunt in tears and my uncle cajoling me to return because, “you know she can’t help it. She’s mentally ill. Whatever happens will be on my conscience, etc.” I made a point to pray the Divine Praises in reparation for sins of blasphemy. (Yes, my cousin WAS mentally ill, but she most definitely COULD control herself if she desired or it was in her interest!) It was worth having my family mad for several weeks. My uncle even called my mother, his sister, to complain. (I was 40 years old at that time!) After a month, my aunt invited me to come over after Mass for pizza. I accepted. Nothing was said about the incident and my cousin never once blasphemed or used profanity in my presence again. Problem solved. They’re all passed on now, so I hope my cousin passed in a better state than I left her that one day.
