By familiarising ourselves with the Old Testament, taking the time to read it repeatedly, getting to love the characters there, and taking guidance form the Church Fathers, we can hear what God says to us through the whole Bible today. The New Old series of books is written to give examples of this.

After I left my sinful lifestyle I made it a point to read the entire Catholic Bible. What an eye opener! Christ is prefigured everywhere in the Old Testament. Beautiful. I look forward to reading it again from start to finish over the next year. I'm in love with the word of God and the Word made flesh.

Fr James , thank you for staying true to the Doctrinal teachings. I have read the 1 Book of Enoch which is referenced through out the scriptures. Although it isn't canonical, it offers many insights to the early church and mentions the Son of Man numerous times. Using it as a commentary, it opens up the scriptures in a whole new light, along with the Book of Jasher. The antediluvian period explains in great detail why God Our Creator felt the need to cleanse the whole earth. The sins of the Watcher Angels, the Nephilim and the giants on the earth at that time. For myself, these books have enriched my faith and certainly answered a lot questions I had. I pray that people get back to reading which I believe is far more enlightening than watching a video. Also I feel the 2 Esza/ Ezdras is important reading if you can find it. It was removed from almost all bibles and probably because certain peoples don't like the idea of not being the chosen people of God. Thank you and God Bless you.

Glad to hear you found the books engaging. A few people have asked about translations, mostly into Spanish or German. Actually it involves a lot more work than just finding a translator. So my conclusion is: 1) that I hope the ideas spread, and people take them forward with their own books in other languages; and 2) if a publishing house wanted to take one or more books in the series to translate and finalise everything else, I could talk to them about that, but I would not be much involved in the process. God bless.

The books are only available in the English language. If in the future translations are made available, it will not be anytime soon. (Better to see how they stand up to scrutiny before embarking on complex translations of biblical nuances -- which should not be rushed.) Thank you though for your interest.

Father, would you consider presenting on the Hebrew Catholic movement within the Church, as it is a growing phenomenon + Deo Gratias, and may one day be considered a Church Nation on a par with others making up the Roman Communion; examples the Maronite Church, the Melkite Church, the Syriac etc. Perhaps such a topic, an awareness, may further encourage the Church's obligatory prayer/s for the Jews on behalf of us all.

Very good advice Father. This is my first time reading the Old Testament through and I have to admit that I get stuck when I don't understand some passage and then go out looking for a commentary to explain it. I'm inundated with numerous explanations many of whom aren't Catholic. I waste a lot of time and I confuse myself. The idea of just read the bible through several times resonates with me. I have a couple of questions though. In your books you often cite bible commentary by the early Church Fathers. Is there a reliable source on the internet to find these commentaries? Or should I avoid them until I've read the whole bible through at least once? Thank you for your advice and the work you do. P.S. The audio books do help me a lot especially as I read along in the books. Thanks! Stay strong. Stay safe.

To make a beginning on the reading the Church Fathers, I have posted a short document here with some suggestions: drive.google.com/file/d/1rqrKqBdSeDIfUsCrnhap4aeTs_ArCaa4/view?usp=sharing [Anyone should be able to download the document... please let me know if there are problems.] There is such a vast amount of writings by the Fathers, that no one can get through it all. So I'd recommend setting aside a certain amount of time per week for it, or else aiming at reading one work every month or two. (Some of the works are very short, others are immense.) And yes, it is better to spend more time reading the Bible itself than commentaries on it. Once one has read through it once, one could begin reading a little bit of commentary. Then the more times one has read the Bible, the more the commentaries make sense. And the Fathers are definitely the best! Not to say we should not read more recent material, but best if the older predominates. That gives us the basis to discern whether the new stuff is still Catholic. God bless!

Cornelius a Lapide gives a great commentary on the Scriptures. He is a C.17th Jesuit constantly quoting the Church Fathers. Should be able to find his works online. As much that has been written since 1950 is poisoned, the surest sources are: - reading Scripture itself. - reading the Church Fathers. Normally we might start with modern books, but let these draw us to the early sources, and once we have a good familiarity with these, we can judge whether the more modern works are in tune with them or not. Elsewhere here I posted the following: To make a beginning on the reading the Church Fathers, I have posted a short document here with some suggestions: drive.google.com/file/d/1rqrKqBdSeDIfUsCrnhap4aeTs_ArCaa4/view?usp=sharing [Anyone should be able to download the document... please let me know if there are problems.] There is such a vast amount of writings by the Fathers, that no one can get through it all. I simply cannot understand why a catholic would put so much emphasis on the old testament over the new. In itself, the old testament is horrible to us, catholics. It's only through the lense of the new that it makes sense. So, in the end, why focus so much on it rather than just following Christ? Is it to bring us back to the old alliance? ... You do know that we have a new and better one, right?
@ScriptureandTraditionFrJM
@ScriptureandTraditionFrJM 11 ай бұрын
I have no clue what you mean by the "old alliance". I'll try to answer your question, but there is a massive communication block between us, as you know from previous comments. I'll try again. Many people have been misled and even gaslighted into thinking that establishing the State of Israel in 1948 can be justified by the OT promises, as if God was promising mere geographical territory to His People. This is false. It is a closed reading of the OT, one not open to Jesus Christ. God gave the Hebrews assistance to conquer the land of Canaan in order that they wipe out idolatry and child sacrifice and establish true worship in the Temple. The land was given for this purpose as preparation for Christ. But when a great many turned against God's purpose, they lost the land. They cannot take it back now and claim it is theirs. It is given only on the condition of obedience to God, which from Jesus Christ is achieved in the New Covenant. What God wants to give is the eternal Promised Land that is Heaven. God gains billions of spiritual sons through the Sacraments rather than just millions of sons through biology (descended from Abraham). God wants us to understand the spiritual reality, not just the flesh and blood, the stones and soil. Christ's Body is the true Temple, not the stone edifice which once stood in Jerusalem. Now for people to say the Old Testament is for the Jews and the New Testament is for Christians is the same mistake, not understanding that it is all Christians and was always Christian and can only be fulfilled in Jesus Christ. The OT makes no sense without Christ. It is a Christian book. All my books and most of my videos reference the New Testament, but my aim is to show that the Old Testament is Christian writing. We should not be gaslighted into thinking it belongs primarily to Judaism. But note it would be false to say the Tanakh (comprising most of the OT) is not given to the Jews. It is. God wants Judaism to testify to the Tanakh, and thereby the Old Testament, as proof that Christians did not make up the OT Scriptures after the Passion and Resurrection. Because the enemies of the Church who deny Christ constantly admit that the Law, Prophets & Writings were written in ancient times, long before Christ, that serves as proof to the world that the Church has not doctored them or made them up. Given that they are all about Jesus Christ, then they must be from God, because no humans could arrange so much intense prophecy and be correct every time. I think you are falling for a trap laid by people opposed to the Church. They want you to think the OT belongs solely to Judaism. This is false. It belongs to the Church, as Jesus and the NT authors show in the way they quote from it, and all the Church Fathers (literally all of them), and the Council of Trent. I cannot explain everything here and now, but will get there with "If You Believed Moses (Vol 2)", which the New Old series is building up to, and this channel attempts to explain. Those who comment here to say I should say less about the OT might not realise they are supporting the agenda of the enemies of Christ who want to deny that the OT is all about Him and that it is properly Catholic.

What? How is that unity? We are Roman Catholic. We are to understand through the priests through the Church as ONE, not as individuals. To open the Bible at random is having us rely on self and not Holy Mother Church. We hear His voice through the unity of His Church through His priests, by way of the Church Fathers, doctors of the Church teaching us the Scriptures. You are suggesting something Protestants do, and I know because I was one. Reading the Bible is fine and a must but telling us to interpret Holy Writ is opening us to chaos and disunity. Why, Father?
@ScriptureandTraditionFrJM
@ScriptureandTraditionFrJM 11 ай бұрын
I think you are misunderstanding the point. The Church has always meditated on the word. The Magisterium draws from the insights of the saints to formulate Dogmas which we must all accept, and magisterial doctrine guided by the Scriptures which also we are to accept. But that does not stop God speaking to us individually for our daily needs. Read the Scriptures now for 20 minutes, and you will find something God wants you, personally, to know today. It is nothing to do with challenging or refusing doctrine.

Summarizing my 20 minutes reading the chapters of Esther, I came away with reparations, penance, and love God with my whole heart, not putting my trust in man. I will now take the time to read Haydocks Catholic Commentary for all chapters I read.

Great. Just to clarify, I am not recommending randomly opening the Bible as a main method, as it is better to be systematic. Only saying that it does not hurt to do that (unless people get superstitious and force a meaning into it every time they open the Bible. God is not obliged to communicate with us if we will not put in any effort.) God bless.

When I first read the Holy Bible, I was advised to first read the New Testament before I read the Old Testament. The reason is that I don’t get confused. Our LORD JESUS CHRIST in the New Testament has corrected all the errors in the Old Testament so when I read the Old Testament, I would know that JESUS CHRIST has already corrected the errors in Old Testament.
