Some top tips! keeping your prey items healthy and well fed is naturally reflected in the condition of the preditor you feed them too. I always feed our prey items for 3-4 days before feeding them off, the colour change alone once they have rehydrated is amazing.

Very helpful. Thanks! Most people on KZfaq and forums keep crickets, dubias and worms as feeders so it's kind of hard to find good information on locusts and my dragon loves 'em.

Hi...I am in Buncrana Co.Donegal Ireland...I was in our local pet shop getting Goldfish food for granddaughter when the owner showed me some live locusts....I always wanted to have a vivarium when a child 55years ago. I asked him if he had suitable containers...he had a second hand 2ft long aquarium...for only 20 euros...so got that for the Goldfish (and placed in the garden) and used the ex Goldfish tank for the Locusts. I had been putting in Basil growing in pots ...from Lidl...they were devoured quite quickly...on here for advice. I have them about 2 months and only 1 left...so going to get more and try carrot. I think the Locusts are just as interesting to keep as a reptile...and they are Vegetarian like self. I dont begrudge the reptile keepers though ...nature will out.

Question for you matey - I am trying to keep my locusts well and healthy and this video has been very helpful - thank you. My question relates to cleaning … what is your method for cleaning the locust enclosure? Do you remove them into a safe zone while you clean out their primary habitat? Or does the micro-cleanup-crew do the job and you never have to rehouse them for cleaning? Cheers bruv

I got a setup atm with 2 adult locusts in a tub with sticks to climb on, the egg holder they come with and a exoterra dirt floor. I keep one corner moist for egg laying and have a heat lamb on constantly. I also have a custom mesh on the roof for ventalation as the container was originally a fish tank so I had a big humidity problem at the start. I feed them on the water balls and bug grub which i put on a plastic dish. They absolutely love life I'm very happy with the life I've given them, they breed like rabbits. I have a nice picture of eggs where they've laid them on the side of the container!

Great tips, just one thing, I saw your video on keeping crickets alive longer and you used a layer of vermiculite so put that in first before the locusts and they have stayed alive for quite a few weeks or is that because they are more hardy than crickets?

I work as a science technician in a school where we have a beardy, been trying to keep her live food in more natural looking enclosures for added education and prettification of class rooms. Had the locust in a fish tank on turf, locust seem to like it till I kill the grass of as I've been cautious of watering it too much so as not to send the humidity too high. Any tips for more natural enclosure. Also thanks for the videos they're really helpful.
@NORTHERNEXOTICS

Maybe with the turf maybe add some veg to grow. They will smash that as food but also if your worried about high humidity for the locust may be worth adding a load of ventalation . Mesh top maybe

I keep getting a few dying after a week or two. I put them in bigger container, have the bug grub and bug balls and put salad in there for them and I get a couple die after a week or two. I got told they need 30 degrees or more to sustain when eating or they'll die. Don't get how can keep them that hot in UK without a heat light or something.
