How to Keep Watercolor Paper Flat!

Are you sick of your paper warping, buckling, and wrinkling when you paint on it? This tutorial will show you a couple of ways to stretch watercolor paper in order to create a tight, flat surface to paint on. I'll demonstrate how to soak paper, along with methods for taping or stapling the paper to a sturdy surface (masonite, MDF, plexiglass, Gatorfoam, etc). As the paper dries, it will shrink and lay flat.

Thanks! The material physics makes sense. I don't have any artist supplies like gum tape.. any advice for using easy stuff to find at the hardware store?

gum tape is basically paper packing tape, which is easily found at most hardware stores

Unfortunately, painter's tape doesn't like to stick to wet paper, so if you try soaking the paper and taping it down with that, it'll just come right off!

would it work if you put a frame of painters/masking tape down on the board first? Then have the gum tape stick to the paper & the non-stick side of the painters tape ? Would that make removal easier ?

For the staple method, what is the white board to which you are stapling the watercolor paper?

So I’ve been using watercolor and gauche for a couple of years, and I’ve never stretched the paper beforehand. When they’re, done, I spray the back of the paper with water, cover with a board and put some weights on it. I should add I cover the paining itself with some special wax made for watercolors. Idk. Is that bad? Lol

That's definitely not bad! There are plenty of ways to work with watercolor - this is just one of them!

Couldn't you take regular foam board or the mdf as well and spray it with a hydrophobic kind of paint or finish, like spray on polyurethane. It should end up water proof and those cans are only like $10 and could make tons of boards. Just a thought.
