All that gunk is basically chain lube, which is sticky and retains all the grit and grime that come into contact with it during riding. It just gets worse over time as you maintain your chain with it. Switching to gearbox oil (using a chain oiler) drastically reduces this mess. Also, the sprocket cover has a special slot for all the ancillaries to keep them separated from the sprocket. Once a bike wash shop did the job for me and simply slapped the cover back on without paying careful attention to the slot. As a result, the O2 sensor socket came into contact with the sprocket and triggered the engine warning caution on the dashboard while riding - I was just lucky it wasn't chewed up by the sprocket.

WD-40 sulla catena è inguardabile, rovina gli O-ring in poco tempo. Mi meraviglio che questa cosa sia ancora sconosciuta a qualcuno.
