Great video! One more tip: add two tablespoons of white vinegar to a bowl of water. Dip all your berries and fruits in this then let them dry on a clean towel before putting into the fridge. It kills the bacteria that causes them to rot. They should last longer. You won’t taste the vinegar once they are dry.

What kind of ratio? I would imagine if you go too strong, you just end up with all your fruits and veggies with a vinegar flavor...giggle. Do you use just white vinegar?
@KellyC12070
@KellyC12070 11 ай бұрын
@@TheStoneWhisperer I don’t really measure. Maybe 1/4-1/2 Cup for a big big bowl of water. Then I rinse the fruit/veg. There isn’t any vinegar flavor/smell remaining. I alternate with baking soda now. Sometimes vinegar, sometimes baking soda(removes pesticides)

While there is no actual proof that it removes pesticides, It may only removes the pesticides in the skin, what about the pesticides inside of the fruit? they are sprayed throughout all stages of growth.

Thanks for this video! 😊 There are also ways to refresh wilted, shriveled veg - e.g. Put wilted leaves in a bowl of water, some ice cubes and couple hours in the fridge and they'll expand and be nice and crunchy again. The same for soft wrinkly root vegetables carrots, radishes etc. (no ice cubes needed). Carrots are also best stored in a jar with some water like the asparagus in the video. Also make sure to see if at least part of a fruit or vegetable can be saved.

The issue is that these veggies over time loose liquid so the point is to add that liquid back to them

nuts go rancid. I keep all nuts and seeds, basically anything that contains oil, in the fridge. Also, somewhere I got the tip of putting a paper towel in the container of spinach to absorb the moisture. I take some out and shake the closed container for air to circulate before placing the paper towel on top and then close. Keeps so much longer.

Unwashed berries in a mason jar in the fridge lengthens the life and keeps things like grapes more “crisp”. Lettuce 🥬 washed chopped and put in a reusable ziplock with a paper towel and then not sealed all the way keeps it and makes it easy to grab for salads too. The cilantro trick works for most of the other fresh herbs too. I keep my onions in the veggie drawer, makes you not cry while chopping. Nuts in mason jars and in the fridge too!

@lauraaqui219 2 жыл бұрын
@@amitas7047 no using foil as a wrap is for celery, lettuce, aubergine, and any solid types of vegetables, to prevent growth of fungus and extend the life of the food sell by date, I have not recommended it for herbs which can be frozen in ice cubes, and used later when needed I have not found a solution to keep spinach longer, but you could try keeping it in foil and see if it works, i have not tried that, yet, the reason it goes off quickly is because of it's high water moisture content, keeping it in a bag also increases the bacteria which encourages moisture to grow fungus on it. Give the foil a try and let me know if it worked for you. Thank you.

There was a trick for celery I saw you separated each stalk cutting the bottom and put them into a glass of water in the shelf and they’ll last longer another tip was with bananas you put cling film or tin foil, cling film is better but anything like that round the top where they join together it’ll last longer as that part goes off first 🙂

Hi Guys, Great, Informative and fun video, I learned so much....Thanks! I do want to offer some advice on leafy greens for those of us who don't eat them enough unless they are ready to grab and eat right out of the fridge.....I know it's best to wash only right before eating them, but, for example, if I want to make a salad, the thought of having to wash AND DRY my greens first sometimes stops me....so, I find if I wash my greens as soon as I get them home, lay them on clean tea towels to dry for a couple hours, then put them in airtight containers in the fridge, they will last 7-10 days! Knowing I can just grab ready to eat greens is helpful for me.

Hi Erin 🤗 you guys are great. I actually soak my berries (all but rasberries) in a 1cup vingear:3 cup water solution to kill off any bacterious spores off the berries, which is usually why they go bad so fast 🥺... I still try to eat them first tho, because even after cleaning them with the vinegar solution, they still tend to go bad before my greens 🤦🏼‍♀️. Hope you like this trick 😁

During Summer I can't leave any fresh produce on the kitchen counters due to the "fruit flies" (in reality young flies soon to become adult ones. Not real fruit flies, which stay the same small size as adults. The ones I have grow to adult fly size). I live surrounded by restaurants, so the alleys are packed with garbage and flies. Plus, I have to keep my windows open for fresh air or for the AC to work (I face South, so it gets extremely hot without AC). So what do you recommend?

I wish that I could leave things out like that! I fear summertime fruit flies and I’ll do just about anything to avoid getting them.🥺😒 I did get some really good tips here though. Thanx :)

I keep my nuts in freezer as they go rancid too soon other wise. Keep bananas in fridge, skin goes black but fruit is fine inside. I keep all my dry stuff in mason jars also but sorry I put ripe tomatoes in the chill chest,at 65 Ive not noticed they are less tasty or get mushy.I also pre wash and dry all my produce except berries.If I wash them ,I freeze them and put in smoothies, oatmeal or home made power bars. I don't peel carrots etc where the skin is the best part for you. Started being vegetarian at 27 and seldom have to throw any food away. Produce is spendy here and being retired I would rather have more money to travel then replacing my produce.Also I put my greens in paper towels to absorb any moisture.

I keep my green onions in water too and they keep growing! What do you suggest about pears and apples? Leave them out on the counter? I find I get pears from the store and put them straight in the fridge and they never taste sweet. I understand it’s what you mentioned, that the grocery store gets them before they are ripen but where should I store them then? First counter, then fridge? Thanks!

princessaome yes! We usually do countertop first and then fridge if they’re appear ripe but we aren’t going to eat them yet!
