How to keep your hands warm. Should you use gloves or mittens?
In this video, Matti will talk about how we keep our fingers warm in winter and show the system we use not to get cold hands while in the outdoors.
He also makes a review of the Taiga Grizzly Mittens 3.0 that we have been using this winter season.

I used to use gloves growing up. Thick thinsulate ski gloves but my fingers would always be cold and never knew why. I thought there was something wrong with my circulation or something. It wasn't till later on in life I learned that the heat can escape from in-between the fingers of the gloves. Now I prefer mittens. It would be ideal to have military mittens or mittens made for colder temperatures than where you live. Thank you for sharing. 😁👍

Mittens is really good even if it’s not really that cold. I use thin, waterproof shell mittens in the mountains during rainy summer days. /Matti

Hi Matti. Good to see you again. Very useable tips on the gloves and mitts. I've worked a lot in north cold country and mitts are the way to go. As much protection from the outer you can get an wool liners. I also like to wear silk liners. They are thin and let the heat from the fingers go from one to another. I like to have something on when I pull my hand out. Old worn out skin. I've also used heated gloves/mitts especially on my motorcycle travels. It's getting easier all the time to power them. Gerbing brand. You all take care, be safe.

I appreciate the detail of your reviews. You have confirmed my suspicion that even my thick lined work gloves don't add a lot of warmth. Like the other commentator, I wear wool liner gloves inside my mittens, but after your review I am going to experiment with using mitten liners instead if I am in more extreme cold. Thank you.

Yes, when it's extremely cold, we experience it makes a big difference with wool mittens instead of wool gloves inside. /Stina & Matti

I like moose hide mittens with knitted raw wool liners. Moose hide is heavy but doesn’t wear out when you’re working, raw wool liners are the best in my opinion, they’re thick and still have all the natural sheep oil in them unlike processed wool. Another thing it’s best to have two pairs one hanging up drying while you are using the others. I used this setup my entire working life in the Canadian bush and we alway had lots of -40 weather in which we worked outside.

I have a pair of Hestra highland mitts. For me they’re warm enough. They have merino woolen baselayer wich can be pulled out of the mitt.

Can you review SEELAND TAIGA GLOVES GRIZZLY BROWN? Ever use a liner made of silk? Have you done a video about your jacket?

I had a pair of thin silk gloves long time ago but I didn’t really enjoyed them. Maybe it’s time to try again! I will check that out this Taiga gloves you are talking about. The jacket. I have made a review of the Taiga forest pants but not the jacket. I LOVE the pants. They are really good! The jacket is also really good but I haven’t used it as much as the pants. But what I have seen so far is that the jacket is really good! /Matti

I often do alpaca wool gloves inside heavy duty polar mittens, and take the mittens off when ever I need finger dexterity

Depending on how cold it is and how warm your outer mitts are, it also works with wool gloves as an inner layer. /Stina & Matti

I've got Raynaud's syndrome and wearing mittens than gloves I can use hand warmers inside the mittens.

Really like your reviews. I use like u the Armys mittens, but just put in my workinggloves, then i have Hestra mittens with extra woolmittens that I can change to. The pair that i not use in the moment, I always stor inside my jacken on the chest. I really curios aboute what jacket and layers you recommend when you dogsledding up in the mountains when its really cold, and last, is it Taiga jacket you use in this video? Thanks for that you share your knowledge, have look on alot of your and Stinas videos.

Hello! Yes, this jacket is a Taiga Forest. I use this when it’s warm and I need a wind proof or water proof layer. During the cold winter we are using big down jackets and smaller puffy jackets. You find more about this in some older videos. /Matti

Great over view of mittens. I have the green pair and they are pretty tough, I wear a poly propylene glove liner and wool mittens inside them. I use the glove liner as a working glove. I really don't understand why some people like finger less gloves, they just don't make sense to me and are very uncomfortable to use.

When the temperature goes down to -15 C or colder, and you need to be still with your hands, driving a nowmobile or dog sled for example the mittens ( finger less gloves) make sense and are necessary.

@@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA I guess with "fingerless gloves" the previous comment meant gloves that leave the tips of the fingers uncovered. That kind that are sometimes used by photographers in moderate cold conditions etc. . They are also common for climbing via ferrata here in the Alps to protect your palms from the steel cables you are grapping while leaving the fingers more sensitive to operate other climbing material.

If with finger-less you mean those that leave the finger tips uncovered, then I also wonder why people use them. If my uncovered finger tips do not hurt from the cold, then I do not need gloves in the first place 😉

Bra fråga... Jag gillar ju lite större handskar och Stina föredrar en lite mindre handske. Så det är delvis en smaksak... Annars har de storlekstabeller på sin hemsida... tror jag... / Matti
