when laying a brick, do you look to the left or the right end of the brick/perp?
@JDNBrickwork
@JDNBrickwork Жыл бұрын
Neither. As explained in the video I look at the perp directly below the course I’m laying with my thumb in the centre of my brick lining up with the centre of the perp below. This way it’s impossible to have wandering peeps Hope this helps 🙏

How do you make sure the brick is square and not tipping back or forward?
@JDNBrickwork

Use a boat level every couple of bricks to begin with. Once you get a feel for it you know straight away if you’ve walled a square brick! 🤗

Stand face on to the wall instead of side on and you can eye you’re perps down easily. I don’t understand why but lots of bricklayers struggle to lay face on
@JDNBrickwork
@JDNBrickwork 2 жыл бұрын
Good point - but I find standing sideways creates minimal twisting and turning. Everything seems to be in the right place and flow a lot easier Plus using the thumb trick takes care of the perps 😎👍
@samhartfieldlewis5247
@samhartfieldlewis5247 Жыл бұрын
I go side on if cant look down and eye the perp nicely, then face when that bit higher up. Also sometimes lay one near the centre and run into that either side. But I work on my own, not on big sites so don’t need to be super fast or stress much. Happy ticking along, nice one go steady

Why don't you also video cleaning the snots off the back of the wall every course? Also the perp joints won't be out of line on a bit of a brick panel like that !!!! Bricks vary in length sometimes so the labourer should get the bricks out of several packs! And yes I am a brickie
@JDNBrickwork
@JDNBrickwork 2 жыл бұрын
Something we’ve took keen notice of lately is snots on the back of our work ☑️ As for banding - much easier said than done. Labourers job is intense enough without having 3 packs of bricks alternating their way to the loading bay

Question from an absolute amateur - how much pressure are you putting on to get your brick down? I find my mortar is either nice and creamy, but needs tapping down - or just too wet and sloppy, I can never get that point quite in between? My bed doesn't look much more than yours, and I don't think I take out any more - so either I'm too weak, or my mix sucks! This is my current effort, but taking me a good while! imgur.com/gallery/DSf6MAc - not easy with rustics!
@JDNBrickwork
@JDNBrickwork 2 жыл бұрын
Nice work mate 👍 keep practicing. You soon get a feel for the brick and it becomes a habit applying just the right amount of pressure to get down to the line with enough excess mortar for your next perp 🤗🧱
