That last tip is spot on , a clean site is a good site . Unbelievable how stressed I can get with a messy site while I’m laying

Quite correct Stu, think what KC was also saying was "pride about the job" I tell my students all the time, that every job they build they should feel a sence of achievement satisfaction that they have built something special, no matter how big or small the job!

Excellent Martyn that’s very important, I’ve said that in previous videos. Quality over quantity with everything

Great tips. Proper mortar ranks up there, if it's not right you'll be struggling. I think the concept of workflow was invented for bricklaying, have a system for your work, your materials lined up, production laid out, steps all planned and make it easy on yourself.

My father was a Mason for 32yrs, your work reminds me of him.... very little wasted movements, quality work striving for perfection. He's build amazing Wood Burning fireplaces for people's homes and would tell me the secret is a proper "Smoke Shelf" instead of a straight flue... could you do a video primarily on the "innards".... ash pit, smoke shelf and flue transition? Thank you. R.I.P. Dad. 2009.

Hand on the knee was taught to me, day one of my apprenticeship. It's a must. Good shout on proper boots. Even the big name brands are shite these days. I have tried everything until I did some research in American boots. The best selling work boots in American are "Wolverines." They are about £120 a pair in the UK, yes I know but bear with me. They will last 3 times as long as your £40 boots. They are also very comfortable and help your back on rough ground. For 40 years I have been looking at plasterers with muck board stands at a height that saves their backs. Only now to I see bricklayers starting to copy them.

I like the tips and to be fair it's all a learning curve. I'm planning on building a brick bbq and prior to this video, I had a go at blocking in a doorway on a coal shed and it didn't go well at all but I was rushing so that's part of the reason 😁. Great video mate and I've just subbed.

Good to watch u Stu. I'm nearly 60 now. Although doing inspections and instructing etc. Theres always something to learn .I've found. As u know. I done up to advanced city guilds brickwork. Only because why not.. but you and Rob Songer are a credit to the game !.. I've got a great Marshalltown 10" worn down to 7.5 " proud trowel .. keep up the good work, watch your back. Use stands or crates for spot boards .. 👍

Little tip for you Stu. I see a lot of brickies throwing mud back on their boards (or the floor) after laying a brick/ block. Gather the excess, place on top of the brick or spread ready for the next brick to be laid. When I see the lads throwing back on the boards (or floor) then to pick up a brick and plus the mud you've just thrown back for the next perp, it does my head in . Just imagine guys, adding up all the time during the day, weeks , months and years that would equate to extra bricks laid for less effort and so more $$$$ Hope this helps my bricklaying brothers :) Rick

I wanna do bricklaying cuz of great pay, being in fields of construction, the job could become a hobby, and I love the scraping sound it makes when u scrape the mortar gunk off the side of the brick when u lay the brick, then scrape that gunk off and throw it on the other brick aside 2 the other side mortar.
@calvincalvinify
@calvincalvinify 3 жыл бұрын
lol you say that right now but as an apprentice I cleaned all of the walls with my trowel everyday and that scraping can get annoying. its a hard job but it gets easier as you go if you get into it dont give up good luck.

exactly paul, the thing is each video is like 10 mins but the footage is like 4 hours so theres a lot of realtine bricklaying there i caould use rather than delete and like you say i will keep this channel for music videos and the other for no music then that way you can choose one or the other, or both! that way im not forcing content on anyone, you choose what you like. :)

Great video and tips Stu. Awesome idea to create the new channel, I'll be following. A tip I've learned from starting as a laborer, then becoming an apprentice is, always have a tape measure, pencil(or crayon or sharpie), carpenters knife, and a twig in your pockets. And construction adhesive can help get an extra season out of your work boots :)

Here's my tips 1. Dont lay a wet brick on another wet brick. 2. Always check your window reveals as you go. Dont leave it to the end. 3. If you drop you trowel down the cavity bend the end of a tie bar then hook ties together to reach the trowel hook a duck style. 4. Dont brick acid your trowel

These videos take a little bit of the fear out of bricklaying. I built a birdhouse once, they wouldn’t even use it for an outhouse! lol Seriously though, my chimney is falling apart on top my house. The mortar is basically crumbling. Trying to find anyone to even come look at is has been futile. With these videos I hope to practice on some quick flower beds then when comfortable move to the roof.
