Keeping your puppy’s attention can be tough. Here is one way I achieve great engagement from my puppy. In addition, sometimes we forget the true meaning of owning a dog

We got a puppy about 6 weeks ago,She's about 18 weeks old. I've watched hours of you videos and they have helped me so much. I get the burn-out and frustration end of things, and this is with only one puppy. When I get to my wits end I just watch more of your videos and it gets my head back in the game. Thank you for all the work you do making these videos,I'd be lost without them....Peace!

THANK YOU!! This is exactly the issue with my lab mix. She’s absolutely bonded to me, but definitely decides when she wants to engage with me. This is such a creative solution to avoid conflict or me calling to her constantly. I’m putting it into practice the second I get home!! Also, THANK YOU for posting these videos. I watch a lot of trainers on YT, listen to podcasts, and used to volunteer before I decided to raise my own pup. Your videos have been the most useful BY FAR. They’re clear, straightforward, and have actual examples without just theory. Your conversation about the German Shepard who refused to “out” a toy and you were able to access his curiosity to switch off the possessiveness was amazing. Being able to communicate is one thing, but starting the dialogue in the first place is a step I didn’t even realize would be so important. Thank you!!

Hi Larry, This was an excellent video and just what I needed to hear! I've trained German Shepard before when I was a lot younger and fitter ! Now I have a three month old GS and have got so carried away with the training and work aspect that I too have forgotten to just have fun. So this morning I did our morning walk off leash for the first time and she was a star. She never let me get more than about twenty feet behind her. When I did she sat and waited til I caught up. I never thought she would do that! We live on thirty fenced off 30 acres- can you believe I had never let her off leash before! Crazy ! Anyway thanks so much for your excellent talks and training advice! You are very real and sensible about training. Let's all enjoy our polite dogs cause we only have them cause we love them!

We re done with training and now do life things like waiting at the bus stop with bunch of ppl, or hiking on trails , or going into stores. And like you say nothing is more rewarding than my morning coffee with my dog at my feet ❤️

This is the perfect video for me right now, I've just taken on a 7month old rescue, some sort of mix collie, gsd, husky I think. Only had him a week and I want to get a head start on training because I'm 7 months behind but I struggle with getting him exited and interested in me and play, so I will definitely try this so I can keep him engaged even when I don't have treat rewards for him or when I'm not training. Does the exact same thing with toys when I can get him to play with toys

Thank you so much Larry. This is the first video that has described exactly my own frustration with my 19 month old border collie/Retriever cross dog. He will only engage when he wants to. Fantastic when he does but he drives me mad when he chooses the finger. I'm not enjoying him as much as I should be. I'm going to try the engagement tactic you've described and see what happens. Really appreciate all the videos Larry. I can totally understand how you can get a bit burnt out trying to keep up with the demand for knowledge from all of us dog owners. It's very much appreciated.

Dear Larry , first of all I personaly really enjoy all nor videos , and all the hard work you put in to your dogs , your clients dogs , and every dog really you come across of. But I would like to say ( you probably won't even respond to this ) I get it u busy , but as I said I would like to say 1thing , your pets , your family needs you , needs your attention before any of us do. They deserve your relaxed self , just to chill and go for a walk on the beach and stuff , so please don't put your self to a burn out position , because who ever likes and follow you here , or IG or FB we will be exeited and happy for you . if its 1-2 vids/ month or its a 30 video / month , so please kick back and enjoy living . you are a great help , I am a new trainer in school and I just love your ways :) so thank you for everything.

I have wanted a dog for some time over 30 years or so .I now have a puppy i listen to everything and take information from everyone, i take what i think will work for me and i try to apply it to my new puppy . I am 4 days into this relationship and what you said in the first film i ever saw of yours was that you dont sleep when you get a puppy until the puppy is comfy and can hold its own toilet times to a schedule sort of thing ,well first night i didnt sleep much every 90 mins i would take him to the garden wait until he releived himself and then just give him some time, the 2nd night the same and so on by the 3rd night he was lasting for over 6 hrs he has made a mistake but only once and i am so glad i did this i am tired but i am also proud of my puppy giving him my time is the best thing i think i can do for him .please continue with the smart advice i am hooked i love learning thank you

Thanks for sharing, probably one of the most important videos out there. I'm about to get 9 week old puppy and have been on KZfaq trying to learn as much as I can. It seems overwhelming that people are trying to train dogs so strictly that it seems almost like it's better not to have a dog. I recognize that there is a diference between spoiling a puppy and training them as if they're a robot. It's a fine balance because if you don't train them and they're out of control you will lose joy in having them and they'll end up abandoned. But if you're overzealous in training them you also lose sight in why you wanted a puppy in the first place. Thank you again for sharing this story!

Thanks for the video Larry, I needed to hear it too. I have a now 15month old Doberman and I have put a ton of effort into trying to train her, and satisfy her mentally and physically each day - I mean a ton. I'm just an amateur trainer so a lot of it was frustrating for me. The frustration is from my own preconceived expectations and then reality creates a mismatch. I should be spending more effort to enjoy her....Thanks for the video

Thanks Larry! - I have a 11 week old Rottweiler pup ‘ Radar’ I am trying my best to expose him to as many experiences as possible, people, kids, water etc. etc. He seems to be doing well however I have the ‘is there anything in it for me?’ Also he can get pretty aggressive at times trying to nip my legs and the leash. - It seems this behavior tends to occur directly after he sees something new or experience’s something new. My question is Is the motive for the behavior latent fear ( fear after the fact).? Or am I doing something wrong?- When he acts like this I put him down. The battle can go on for several minutes we’re I’m holding him on his back and he’s trying to bite me. Thank you for all the content you put out. It helps a lot. You always seem to discuss problems I’m having and your content and advice give me confidence for which I’m very grateful!

@@gatlingoodman9772 I'm fostering a 6yr old dog part time and the dog has shown that he's not very interested in me and the training, and has never actually played tug or chased a ball. He's taken the tug toy a couple of times but weakly, and I let him win, but he just then turns around and drops it, end of play. There's something I saw Larry do casually but I haven't seen him talk about. He gives reluctant dogs playful pushes on the side just behind the front leg. So I tried pushing the dog around when he was engaging with me and we had our first tug of war. Another thing I learned is that he was bored with my training because I didn't proceed at a fast rate of more and more and different commands quicker and closer together, so we made more progress today than usual. A big deal that he played tug with spirit for the first time. Pushing him around a bit did it.

However, I live in an apartment complex and don’t have anywhere fenced in to practice this with him and to transition him into being off leash. He will play and respond to my commands with food but he becomes very disinterested in me and some of his toys VERY quickly. I need to get him dependent on me ASAP!

He will pull me right down the road. He won’t listen when i tell him to heel or to not pull. I’ve tried a harness, pinch collar, normal collar. I’m not sure what to do. He’s so stubborn. He gets way too excited when we take him for walks to the point I don’t even want to take him for one because he’s pulling so hard the entire time. He’s a little over 100lbs and very strong. I have a puppy that will be 7 weeks old this Friday. I got him at 4 weeks old because the mother quit caring for him. I just got a crate today. He hates being confined. And he wants to rule the roost. Man is he a handful! He knows "here", "sit", "down", "out" and "potty". But he wants to be a pay me dog if he's in the mood. He's smart. He loves milk and will sit and wait with big puppy dog eyes while I get it ready. Everyone kept telling me he was too young to train because he's just a baby. BS! He has already learned bad habits from not being crated.

Especially when I call him to "come" if he's holding something valuable to him (maybe a bone) he even runs away from me because he knows I'll take it from him. 2. He suddenly started barking at EVERYTHING. When some family member comes into the room, when someone enters the house, when someone is passing in the street. And it's getting annoying. I searched around and tried to teach him "Speak" and "Quiet" but I can't find anything that makes him bark every time. Meaning he barks at it but when I try to repeat he doesn't anymore. How can I make him stop barking? My friend says maybe it's his "fear stage" and will go away after a month.

BTW, when I took him to vet the other day he didn't let the vet touch him. He's usually very calm around him.

For 1- you need to gain the dogs trust try by feeding the dog by hand and also to get an immediate response use impulse training And for 2- try socializing him more often and carry treats to reward, i suggest you start clicker training for basic obedience because it fixes alot of problems.

I have a 3year old German Sheppard husky that I adopted from a shelter last yer. I spent the first 6 months with her day in and day out building a strong bond with her. We worked really slowly on her spending time home alone and now shes ok. But my biggest problem is that I cant get her attention. I know she knows her name but when i call her she wont even look at me unless i have food. Ive been working on "look at me" or "focus" whatever command you'd like to call it but when anything else is happening, i mean anything she has no interest in me at all. How do I get her attention?

Hi there, I'm training a 5month old dutchie. He has basic obedience, but we're having basic issues because he loses interest quickly. What do you recommend for an older pup that will NOT release a toy for food. He will out for another toy, but not for food. He's not horrible, but doesn't see huge value in bringing the toy back to me.. Do you have a video somewhere? Thanks

How do you know what length contact point to choose for your dog? I’ve got a 6-year-old German Shepherd with, what I consider, thick fur and a 4-month-old German Shepherd with pretty thin fur (no undercoat yet, I’d assume). The pup hasn’t started ecollar training yet, but I would think both dogs wouldn’t need the dame contact point length.

R.L. Duck look at the previous videos he mentions that contact point lengths aren’t necessary try placing it very high and under the ear make sure its tight and when you move the collar it moves the dogs neck, then move the transmitter up and down to dig it into the fur, but also use a deshedding brush because some hairs could block the contact

Can you do a video on how to transition from giving food as reward to no food? I've been training my 18 month old rottie and he's great when you have food but without it he's not so good.
