How to keep your RV SEWER HOSE from FREEZING (2019 Grand Design Solitude)

We are in the middle of preparing for winter in our Grand Design Solitude and we're back again with a how-to video this time. We have tested this sewer hose heating method for a couple nights now and it has worked perfectly for us and it seems to be working for others as well. See you next time!
My wife (Ashley) and I (Jameson) decided to leave our home in San Diego, California and DRIVE to Anchorage, Alaska in order to be closer to her brothers Adam and Justin who are affected by Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Could use 6" flexable havac duct instead of strips of insulation and using all that tape

Thanks for the instructions. Did the heat cord come with a plug on the end, as I didn't see it in the video. I'm a newbie.

Great video. I have two questions: 1. Shouldn't the sensor be near the sewer instead of the camper? (I would assume it's warmer near the camper which might offset the temperature for the rest of the pipe.) 2. When you wrap the cable, do you leave the sensor exposed (or do you wrap that as well)?

Maybe i'm dumb.. can you explain why you need to heat the sewer pipe? -- Isn't the proper thing to do is to fill-up your your black or grey tank and empty it all at once when it's nearly full? I assume you're leaving your tanks open and draining 24/7?

Probably for reassurance. My black valve was leaking on my trailer and I didn’t know so the whole sewer hose froze solid into a block of ice

You should rename your videos “How to Californicate RVing”. You should not use the corrugated flex sewer hose in severe cold conditions. The corrugations hold water and it does not lay completely flat. Everywhere it sags it will hold water. Use 3 or 4” PVC. Wrap it with your electric heat tape and insulate. The smooth PVC will not sag will insure all liquids are completely drained.

I can definitely see how PVC would be a more robust, long term solution. For 1 winter this worked perfectly well for us. Also, the conditions with this setup as far as the hose is concerned isn’t extreme cold...that’s the purpose of the heat tape and insulation. It doesn’t matter that a small amount of water pools in the corrugation because it won’t freeze. Additionally, there’s no sagging anywhere since we took care to support the hose, and the insulating tape makes it pretty rigid. I appreciate your input but could do without your clear bias and discriminatory comments about California.

PVC piping has to be custom fit. Not really feasible if you move often unless you are awesome and can get your RV setup exactly the same, every time.
