We've definitely had some grey days already, but when the sun comes out it's beautiful. It's very different from the southwest (obviously!), but we're enjoying it so far. Fingers crossed we'll get some good snow for skiing this winter!

Thanks! To ensure we don't have any issues with condensation, we bought a 35-pint residential dehumidifier. We keep it in the shower tub so it's out of the way, then just keep the bathroom door open to let the air circulate. While you can just set a target humidity on the dehumidifier, we have it hooked into our home automation system so that the target humidity is calculated based on the inside and outside temperatures. You can read more about how we are managing humidity here: www.adventurousway.com/blog/winter-rv-preparation#dehumidifying It has a 1-gallon bucket and we've been emptying it about once per day, so it's definitely working! We've not really had any condensation form on the windows. If the windows do start to fog up at all (usually when we're cooking and have closed the bathroom door by mistake), we have a small USB fan that clears the windows in just a few minutes.

Love the skirting you did. That should definitely help. Great job. I'm curious about the need for a heated sewer hose / cost vs benefit. If you only open it up once a week to drain would you really need it to be heated for just that 15 minutes of use? Don't forget a snow shovel to be able to get to the drains during the winter. Snow drifts can get quite big up there. Ski season already opened in Colorado. Hopefully it is epic skiing/riding there for you this season.

It's a good question, and the honest answer is we're not sure. While it's possible that we may have made it through the entire winter without any issues with the sewer hose, we made the decision in the end not to risk it. Yes, the heated sewer hose was an expensive luxury in that regard, but it's one less thing (hopefully) to worry about! There is no snow on the ground here (still!) and temperatures have barely dropped below freezing in the last week - fingers crossed for some snow soon!

I think I would go with the Heated Sewer Hose Cover. When the sewer hose has to be replaced it would be much less expensive to replace only the hose and apply the cover to the new hose.

Good idea on your hoses and good luck in Vermont. I am now in FL but we lived 4 years in the Chicago area. The first morning at -34 F you may wonder if it was a good idea or not. Good luck.

Haha, fingers crossed it won't get that cold, but theoretically we'd be OK even at that temperature. That'd be right around the lowest temperature ever recorded here! According to historical data, we should expect average lows of around 0°F in January, and we're in zone 4b which means we should expect extreme lows of around -15°F. I guess we'll find out soon enough! :-)

We skirted our rig and placed a small electric heater with built in fan and auto shut off on a block to keep it elevated. Temperatures have gotten into the low 20s with the temp in the skirted area staying above 40 even on the coldest times. I would suggest you do the same. It will help with preventing a very cold floor and protect any pipes in the rig.

We're keeping a very close eye on temperatures with our home automation system. So far, lowest outside temperature we've seen is 19°F and underneath the RV was still 39°F, while the tank valves themselves were 44°F. That was without running the furnace either, which is ducted directly into the cavity around the tanks - we tested it the other day and turning the furnace on for 12 minutes increased the temperature at the valves by 9°F. If we see temperatures drop and running the furnace isn't working, then we'll look at options to put a heat source of some kind underneath the RV.

I’m in Florida and until I retire I won’t need to worry about super cold weather. Regardless, I was glued to this video because I love all things RV and I want every cool thing there is. Even though I won’t use them, I almost ordered all the products you just showed. No, NO, Lori……you don’t have to have everything!! Lol

Haha, wheels are the best thermostat RVers have ;-) we've spent the last few winters down south, but wanted to try something a little different this year. Not only does it let us go skiing, but we're also looking to buy land in the area.

jD is right the brass elbow hose connection show be covered, they sell a insulating bib cover. Be sure not to overlap int should not wrap over itself, usually marked on instructions overlapping itself creates a fire hazard.

That's what I read about most heat trace, but I spoke with NoFreezeHose and asked specifically about this. They said because of the way this regulated heat trace works, there is no danger from overlapping it on itself, or from wrapping it tightly around a fitting like our brass elbow. Since the video, we have also wrapped some more insulation around the elbow so its very well protected now.

Looks like that is self reg type heat cable. Those tight wraps at the fittings are likely to cause cold spots in the cable as the inner bus wires become de-bonded from the inner conductive core. It's meant to be laid flat or with gentle loops to avoid that.

I was concerned about the same so I spoke to the manufacturer and they said that this heat trace is fine to wrap in tight loops like shown in the video

I'm sure they would say no problem. Likely the manufacturer of the self reg heat cable they use has minimum bend radiuses for their cable. Let us know if you experience cold spots in the cable in that area.

I’ll be interested to hear how you handle the cold. We also have an Outdoors RV, and our water froze up when we were boondocking and it got down to 12 degrees one night. We clearly were too confident in the insulation.

Hey guys, tip, on extremely cold nights, water can freeze at ground level from the supply causing temp block/ice cube in pipe, since you have full hook up, let a faucet slowly drop over night, the moving water will prevent freezing at ground level, watch grey tank level of not open. Believe your choice in RV is going to be a nice winter experience. Best of luck, keep a pint of Canadian Mist handy

Thanks! I'm hoping to avoid dripping a faucet, but we'll keep an eye on it - the RV park plumbing is buried pretty deep so that should be safe, and the outlet at our site is stuffed with insulation and our neighbor's heated hose is keeping that entire area at about 80°F so fingers crossed it'll be OK! Fingers crossed!

Milk crate style storage bins can be purchased at Walmart. Place a couple of those strategically to keep the water hose off of the ground. Could also purchase an extra sewer hose support and use it to elevate the hose off of the ground. Just a thought. 😊

Lots of good useful information. We spent part of last winter in our trailer. This would have made our life much easier, Where did you get your foam board insulation? Did you put any heat or lights under your trailer?

If youre worried about your water hose leaking putting teflon on the threads wont help you out. The threads don't make the seal. I would replace the O-ring gasket though. Also I wouldn't let the heat trace touch itself or within a couple inches. I worked in the oilfield setting up camps and installed self regulating heat trace all the time. I've saw camps catch on fire because the handyman installed heat trace touching itself.

The rubber gaskets were all fine, so the PTFE tape is just to help form a seal on the threads without having to tighten it so hard, as well as make it easier to disconnect the hose later. I confirmed with the manufacturer that unlike some of the older heat traces, the one our hose uses is fine to be overlapped on itself without causing issues. Good call-out though!

They certainly look heavy duty and durable! I like the camlok arrangement and that gives me an idea....🤔 do the camloks fit in the bumper/sewer hose caddy?? Curious though... I can see using the heated water hose with pig tails because I had a fitting freeze last fall/winter but the foil tape alone will not insulate your brass fitting, you may want to wrap insulation around that as well just to be safe. An ouch of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure...just saying. But the sewer hose... Are you leaving the black and grey tank valves open?? I'm told that isn't recommend. But if you are not, should there, with the proper slope, be any water left laying in the hose? Because it should not freeze when draining the tanks. If the hose was just laying on the ground or if not properly supported creating a belly in the sewer hose then yes it would need to be heated. Other than that it is a bit of an overkill. I don't live in Vermont rather Ohio and we don't get the kind of snow they do there but we do get plenty cold!

They are really heavy duty for sure! I didn't try to fit the Camlock end in the bumper, but that's because the hose is 10ft long so it wouldn't fit anyway. I have found a plastic storage caddy online that's designed for the Lippert Waste Master hoses (which also use the Camlock fittings). They install under the RV and the hose coils up inside it. The hose remains permanently connected at the RV end, and there's a valve on the handle at the other end of the hose so you just pull it out, put it in the dump station and open the valve. We might look at installing something like that in spring, but we wouldn't be able to do it with the heated hose as it wouldn't curl up in a tight enough radius to fit in the storage caddy. For the brass fitting, we were in quarantine at the time of the install so we couldn't go out and buy any more insulation. We've since wrapped some insulation around it and added more foil tape so it's nice and warm now! We leave the tank valves closed, then open them every few days to dump when necessary - stops anything unwanted (smells or otherwise) coming back up through the hose from the RV park's plumbing. Theoretically we could leave them open, but this feels safer! The biggest concern with an unheated hose would be the ribbed interior surface. I'd be concerned that any fluid left in the hose would freeze. Each time we dumped, a little more might build up until you get a blockage. Maybe it would have been fine, but we decided on balance not to risk it. Another option is to use a smooth-walled hard pipe (e.g. PVC) which is probably what we'd have done had we not gone down this route.

Assume you are metered? I would add some batten insulation inside your ground box. Have the park owners mentioned the frozen ground depth they see there?

We're metered, yes. I'm not too concerned about the ground box where the water spigot is. It's already packed full of insulation, but better yet it's shared with our neighbor whose heated hose is coiled up in there. Their hose isn't regulated, so it's really warm in there! In fact, when I first opened it, I assumed somebody had setup some kind of hot water circulation pump - it must have been about 80°F in there!

Pipe joint tape doesn’t do anything to seal a garden hose fitting. It might make you feel better but that’s all. The gasket inside the female fitting provides the seal. When you re-use the hose replace the gasket with a new one…

The rubber gasket in the fitting provides the primary seal, but the PTFE tape helps to seal the threads which may have imperfections on. It also lubricates the joint, allowing the two connectors to be sufficiently tightened to engage the rubber gasket.

Thanks for this Video. As You know the US is in a Freeze. You have way too Many watching :-))) to answer all Q`s if you should happen to review Mine, (Did you plumbers tape this connection At 3:05 or was it pre-sealed tape.) and did you extra cover the connection coming out of Home. I found two covers on sale $ 1:50 at HomeDepot that has a string in the ends to ty taught just the 8 inch long part on where they connect shaped & very thick. from Florida .learning about the deep freeze. I like How you are determined to find the Best. Now for the wattage per hour

I would call ahead of coming to Florida. Your KZfaq Channel Could give you some clout /Maybe 2/20/2021 I learned from a Gardener in Canada that Has a friend that teaches about The Sun Cycles. every 11 years. I`ve seen this happen in my life a few times. it`s not a perfect science but very important for Growing worldwide. Be careful of strong wind and trees while I`m at it. I guess it depends what you mean by "not really using them". Let me try to explain. First, your fresh tank. You absolutely could just use a heated hose connected to your RV and bypass your fresh tank entirely. However, we chose to keep our fresh tank about half-full or so in case of emergencies. In our case, that came in useful when a line froze elsewhere in the RV park and they had to turn off water to everyone to fix it. We simply turned on our RV's water pump and carried on like nothing had changed. As for your grey and black tanks, it's generally recommended to keep your tank valves closed and only open them when you're ready to dump. This isn't a winter-specific thing, and the rationale is to ensure that if anything goes wrong in the park's sewer system, it doesn't back up into your RV. If you take this approach then your grey and black tanks will be in use - you'll be filling them and dumping them periodically. Even if you opted to keep your grey and black tank valves open (again, not advisable), if they weren't insulated then there's a good chance that residue would slowly freeze and build up in the tanks and pipes, potentially causing issues over time. So to answer your question - do you have to insulate the holding tanks? I would recommend it.

@@AdventurousWay Thank you so much, I need all the info I can get. I live in Michigan and it decided to be winter early this year so I’m trying to get everything done before it gets too cold. If you have any ideas about insulating my tanks and you have time I’d appreciate. I should mention that I have a 2005 holiday rambler Alumascape with an arctic package so my underside is wrapped… do you think I’d be good to go just wrapping it up with the insulated skirting?

For extra piece of mind, you can pick up one of those cheap weather stations with a wireless temperature sensor and put that under the RV. Then, if it looks like it's getting close to freezing, you can add some supplemental heat under there with an incandescent bulb or similar.

I didn't know anyone made a heated sewer hose, but in looking how you supported it, you're going to be disappointed the first time you pull the valve and it falls to the ground in between supports. Get some wood boards and support the entire length of it. Good review though.

Oh, that thing is solid! I know it may not look it, but the hose itself is pretty rigid so there is no slump whatsoever when we dump. A normal hose would definitely need support though!

Im in vermont and was looking at these hoses as heat tape seems not safe or reliable. How did it workout?

That was one of our concerns too! These hoses have been great! In fact, we've been using them as our main hoses since we installed them last November - they're still hooked up now, but just unplugged from power. As well as being heated, both are just really solid, good quality hoses.

@@AdventurousWay I went ahead and ordered them or one I need to know figure out how I can attach it to my water pipe at least four or 5 feet down into the ground. I can do that I will have a worry free winter at least the water freezing. Freezing.

Looks like their website is a little buggy. In that email popup that appears, there should be an X in the top right corner but sometimes it doesn't appear. Click around in the top right corner of that box and it should disappear.

That sewer hose is wayyyyy to expensive for what it is. You could just buy heat wire and wrap a normal sewer hose up. Not to mention that rarely is the sewer hose within 10-15 feet of your hook ups

That’s totally an option too. Whatever works for you. In 3 years of full time RVing, we’ve never had a problem reaching the sewer hookups but if that’s a concern then you might need a different solution.

No, we paid a full price. We always disclose it if we get a product for free, we get a discount not available to the public or it is sponsored in any way. It's a very small company - I think essentially it was a single person making the hoses (they may have grown by now, I don't know), so I think that's why at that point in time the owner could do such a personal touch.

Would not recommend buying from them. Not sure if they are still in business as unable to get anyone to answer the phone. Returned my hose in December and was promised a refund. Kept emailing them and last I heard from them was March and Jeff said I would get a refund within a few days. Still waiting and have not heard from anyone in months. Good luck ever getting a return or your warranty covered.
