Step by Step for a cold start:
1. Fuel is on.....duh....
2. Cut off switch is in the on position
3. Using your manual decompressor (if you have one) cycle through the kickstarting motion 4-6 times to prime engine
4. Find TDC (top dead center)
5. Push through TDC about an inch or so
6. Full choke
7. Kick as hard as you can *do not give the bike any gas!
8. Release choke upon starting and let the bike warm up

I've just downgraded to an XL600R and find the learning curve of starting (and riding) to be something to get used to. One thing with this bike is that with the auto decompressor which engages with the kickstarter, there is no reason to have to jump on that kicker unless you only weigh 90 lbs soaking wet. The bike kicks relatively easily as compared to an old big bore two stroke without a decompressor, and jumping on it like that is a good way to break a leg when she decides to kick you back. Otherwise, good video, thanks for sharing! 🍻

I still have my 1983 XL 600 though I bought a 2022 450RL. The bike has an automatic decompression valve that engages at the top stroke of the kick. The main tip is to turn the idle up a bit the screw has an extra large head very easy to turn by hand and most important never ever ever open the throttle while kicking or you will break your ankle. My bike had a warning sticker on the tank

When i got my xl600 it had been sitting for a decade so it was a tough first start. My dad who only rode big bore 2 strokes told me to pull the throttle and kick it, and that's how i ended up with a hole in my foot.

Had an 89 CR 500 years back remember dropping it off at big 4 motorcycles near Brandon mostly worked on Harleys but I didn't have a truck to bring it anywhere else so that being couple mi ride from my house is where it ended up after they got a new clutch in they called me at work and said how the he'll do you start this bike I replied you gotta put some ass in it he laughed and said I guess we don't have enough here cuz we've all tried it then o laughed said ok man be up there couple hrs went home put boots on drove up there they all walked out mechanic pushing the bike an old trick was to lean it over to the right couple seconds then find dead center kick s*** out of it so I did first kick bwaa bwaa fired right up I proceeded to ride wheelies back and fourth appreciating them yelling he'll yah clapping raising he'll bike was a beast that couldn't help making a scene .Good times 👍

You can kick them over with your left leg if you sit backwards on the saddle. Just kidding! I meant with your left leg and standing astride the bike, not on it. I'm ambi on almost all limbs so maybe it is easier said than done. Also, if you kick it over with your left leg and you're off the bike, it kind of makes more sense with a cold bike since it's not going anywhere (fast) until it warms up. So you can stand around and adjust your helmet and gloves and make sure every thing is ready to go. These old carbureted bikes are very cold natured as designed...

Good video but that’s not top dead center. I don’t know why people call it that. You are still in the compression stroke with the piston traveling up building compression. You build enough compression that you CANT get to top dead center without first using the decompression lever. IF you’d found top dead center it would have suddenly gotten real easy to kick, instead of real hard. Like I said. Good video. I wish people would just stop saying that’s top dead center when it’s not. Also, if that was top dead center and then you kicked it a little further past you’d also be skipping the spark plug firing at the top of the power stroke and defeat the whole purpose. 1. kick until it gets hard in the compression stroke 2. Pull in the decompression lever and push the kick start a little further to get you to top dead center. 3. Let the kick start up and kick hard. This will take the motor into the power stroke where the spark plug ignites the fuel and the bike should fire up. Great video otherwise. Understanding the why behind the procedure shows why it works. I currently ride an 86 XL600R and my old XR650R required the exact same procedure.
@kextrz
@kextrz Жыл бұрын
I disagree. What enables big four strokes monos to be kickstarted is that there's a full crank rotation to get momentum. A full crank rotation with minimal resistance. So the piston does need to be positioned just past TDC on the compression stroke. Just past the moment (a few degrees more than that actually) after the spark plug fires.

Are you sure you want to get it at top dead center?? Remember timing is usually set BTDC- meaning before top dead center. You walk that Kickstart till it's on the compression stroke right before top dead center that's when it's going to spark you're going to force that last bit of compression it's going to spark and then the power stroke is going to go down. If you kick right at top dead center the engine has already sparked or should have. It's more or less going to be a dead kick.
@Holgrinator
@Holgrinator 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Lots of people call it TDC for some reason. It’s not. It literally got hard to kick because it’s still in the compression stroke. You release that compression so you can forcefully kick it through and into the power stroke getting the plug to fire and ignite the fuel
