Thank you for this info! After searching internet for almost an hour, I finally found you! Thanks for showing how to mix the Bayer tree & shrub for use on cactus, but bonus was showing your cactus successfully thriving a year later. Helps me overcome the fear of doing more harm with this insecticide than good.

Very helpful😌👌💯I use a systemic and it has prevented any mealybugs and scale insect for years

Definitely, systemic is definitely the way to if you’re able to do it before a pest 😅

I just had systemic on my sedum and I just found a infected plant with scale. I am thinking MAYBE it didn't have time to work maybe. It was on for 3 weeks but I noticed it wasn't melted well into jr soil.

OK, I have never heard of using windex for plant pests. I wonder what the mechanism of action is.

The plants seem to like your soil mix, it's very gritty, can you give the composition?

When you say you recommend doing a 2nd round of the treatment 10 days later, does that mean you leave it out to dry for that time? Or do you pot it back up with temporary soil just for 10 days?

Hello! I pot the plant and do a second soaking after it’s planted. Sometimes even a third. No need to dig it up

You realise they can survive for QUITE A WHILE not in soil. Cacti aren't like vegetable, they can remain dry and unpotted for weeks. In fact when repotting a cacti its normal to not water for 3 weeks to allow any damage to the roots to dry and callous. Otherwise if it's watered as soon as it's potted, it can be the start of root rot leading to the whole cactus rotting and dying

hey there, I was wondering if you think it’s a good idea to dip plants in this solution as a pre-preventative? I have a few plants that I want to pot up but I’m afraid they are dormant and I wasn’t sure if it’s OK to do this right now? thanks so much in advance for your help!
@RareCactus
@RareCactus Жыл бұрын
I’ve never tried it as preventative. For that, try searching for a systemic insecticide which your plant absorbs and then feeds to potential pests to kill them 🤓

I have a large cactus with 2 large arms (boobs) extending out. I just noticed meely bugs in the joints of the arms & they are pulling away from the main part of the plant. Should i cut them off & treat the plant? Or just treat the entire plant? Yes, i ignored my boob cactus in the last weeks as ive been working so many hours trying to meet my deadlines. Any advice would very much appreciated!!!!😢😢😢
@RareCactus
@RareCactus Жыл бұрын
Hey! No need to cut it, just hose those suckers off with the hose (completely) once a week when you water and only treat with pesticides if after 3 weeks they come back. They usually don’t if the plant of getting sun and health 🙂

I heard you say that too many organic substances in a potting medium can attract pests, do you know any inorganic potting medium that can be used for phalaenopsis orchids? I've only ever been able to find bark chips as a potting medium and it would make sense why my orchids specifically seem to attract so many pests, would moss be a better alternative?
@RareCactus
@RareCactus 3 жыл бұрын
Not sure if the same also applies to orchids to be honest. I have orchids as well and they do live in bark and seem to be ok.
@bhumphries1360

Miss is going to stay wetter longer. So, if you e struggled with fungus gnats, I'd stay away from it. Plus, if you live in a more humid envy, I wouldn't change to spagnum moss. You can mix perlite, horticultural charcoal, and lava rock with your bark chips. Many premixed Orchid mediums come with many of those substrates I listed above. Repot me website has a lot of orchid pre mixed mediums available. They are a bit pricey. So, you could easily mix your own with what I listed above. Whatever media you choose should always be based on your environment to avoid root rot.

Okay awesome! Also in the video at 5:24 you were talking about the different types of insecticides. You said that was a contact insecticide but it’s an systemic insecticide. You said to use contact insecticides first but this one in the tub with water is a systematic. Just confused!
@RareCactus
@RareCactus 3 жыл бұрын
@@BobbyJpure there are both kinds shown in the video and I did include Windex since as you say my first treatment was with systemic instead of contact (which is preferred).

Absolutely hate mealybugs, pain in the ass indeed, worst pest ever. The Melocactus recovered well, though. Just a shame that the systemic pesticides that used to work flawlessly in the past and readily available have all been banned here. A lot of the ones available now don’t work at all. Thanks for sharing with us 👍🏻🌵☀️🌼🏜
