HOW TO Kill Roots In Your Drain

In this video I show you a product that I have started using to kill some roots in my home's main drain.
The permanent fix to this problem is to dig up the mainline piping and replace it with new ABS piping. But that is going to cost you thousands of dollars. If you have the money its worth it, but if you don't have that money or need to get a loan, just use copper sulfate to keep the weeds away.
Don't wait until your main drain is clogged to start using this product. I waited 9 months after the first use and my main drain started to clog up again.
Copper Sulfate will not unclog a main drain that is currently completely clogged. You will have to unclog your drain and then use copper sulfate as regular maintenance.
To unclog a drain, use:
-Plunger
-Drain Cleaner Liquid
-Drain Snake
-Drain Bladder
-Hydrojetter attachment to a pressure washer

What a great video this is! We have something in common besides tree roots in the sewer line, as my house was also built in 1947. I bought my house in 1979, and about once a year I had to have a plumber snake out the sewer line to get rid of tree roots. Around 1990, the plumber who had just snaked out the sewer, suggested using Zep Root Kill at least once a year. He also said that after using it to use no water for at least 8 hours to give it time to make good contact with the roots. I always use Zep just before I leave the house for a vacation, to give it plenty of time to do its job.

I'm glad to hear that the Zep Root Kill is working for you too. When we first moved into our home it did not have a cleanout vale at the front of the house so the plumbers had to hydrojet the main line through one of the plumbing vents coming out of the roof. The cleanout has been a good investment =)

That's awesome! I wish I had known about this stuff 12 years ago when I first moved into this home. I paid $2,200 to repipe the bathroom and install a cleanout only to realize later that none of that work fixed my problem...the problem was the roots in the line.

I have read that it can work on sceptic tanks but in high amounts can be detrimental to the bacteria. I don't have experience with sceptic tanks. I recommend you to consult with someone who has experience with sceptic tanks before trying it.

I've also read it is okay for septic tanks. Like he said though, too much will hurt the bacteria. This product kills more than roots. It's often used in small ponds and stuff like that to briefly kill off algae... not a long term effect though in that regard. Not sure if that would translate to bacteria in the septic if you used too much.

As far as I know yes it is safe for plumbing and trees. People have been using this for decades. If you pour it directly into a tree trunk you could kill the tree. I have read that some people drill holes into tree stumps, pour the crystals in, and soak with water to kill a tree stump.

I hear you don't want to put it down a sink, tub or other drain that might have a S or P trap. Apparently if the crystals sit too long in a trap they will off gas into the house which is bad. I think I read that they can hurt the pipes in that situation also since they are sitting there so long. Personally, I dump the crystals down the clean out that I have in my yard... that is where I want them anyway.

Yes. Copper Sulfate is commonly used as a fungicide and herbicide.

Hi!! Can I use that in my shower drainage?

I don't know. I would think yes if you flush it down with a gallon of water each time you pour in the crystals. Are you having issues with your shower drain? If you are, put about half a cup of dish soap in the drain and let it soak in for 30 mins. Then dump some hot water in the drain and use a plunger to mechanically move anything that's stuck in there.

@@ChavezDIY it happened about 8 months ago. We are kind of in a drought and I think it’s roots looking for water… I bought a product and Home Depot specially for roots ( forgot the name ) and will shoot down the drain. But will definitely try also your suggestion….

There's a possibility that its roots. You'll have to use 2lbs of copper sulfate every six months as regular maintenance.

My septic guy told me today I can dissolve 1 pound of rock salt in hot water and pour it down the drain once a month to keep the roots out of my main pipe AND the septic. And it won’t hurt the septic system. Is that true?

I have never used rock salt to kill roots, but I did a Google search and apparently it does work to kill roots. "Rock salt, or sodium chloride, can kill tree roots and plants." Your second question was regarding the septic system. I did a google search and a high amount of salt can be harmful to the septic system. "Yes, Salts can be problematic with Septic Systems. High salt content can kill off the necessary microbes needed for waste decomposition." How much is a high amount? I don't know. You will have to find someone that uses rock salt on septic systems to get an idea of what is a safe amount.

You can put it directly into the main line. But it won't remove a clog if your main line is currently clogged.

I have read that copper sulfate is bad for pipes. Is that true?

I have not heard that copper sulfate is bad for pipes. Which types of pipes, cast iron? ABS? PVC? You are welcome to share a link to an article that states that it is bad for pipes. I think that Zep would not sell their product if it was bad on pipes because they could have a lawsuit about it damaging pipes. Some people online have reported using copper sulfate in their pipes for over two decades with no problem.

Plumbers will generally tell you not to use Cooper sulfate and instead to call a plumber. The cost to replace those pipes is in the several thousands. Good money for the plumber that gets the job 😄. There's an obvious interest for the plumber to tell you not to use copper sulfate.

@@starseed1641 I don't know. I don't have a sewer cam to take a peek in the line. If your main line is completely clogged this won't unclog it. First thing I did was add the liquid drain cleaner and use a plunger when I noticed the toilet gurgling and getting stuck.
