If you don't want to kill the clover in your lawn...or you have a clover lawn but you still want to kill weeds out of it then there are very few good options for you except for what I demonstrated in this video.
I sprayed my lawn with 2,4-d and killed the vast majority of weeds out of the grass and 30-days later the clover was still alive everywhere even though it's density was diminished.
You HAVE to make sure you don't overapply and you HAVE to expect some damage to your clover when applying 2,4-d but this is the most common way to treat weeds in desirable clover patches UNLESS you happen to live in a state where 2,4db is available for sale.
I am restricted by my state to buy 2,4db so I can't use it or showcase the effects in my lawn so 2,4d is my best alternative.
You can check if 2,4db is available for sale in your state here: shrsl.com/4hate
You can read more about killing weeds but not clover including these caveats in the following blog post: turfmechanic.com/kill-weeds-b...

I AM SO GLAD I FOUND YOU! I love the clover in my yard . The problem is where I find clover , I find tons of crab grass. I was leaving it alone in hopes it would just take over the weeds and grass if it wanted as long as those weeds of every kind died off for good . I’m trying to save my lawn that’s been taken over by grab grass , tons of it. It’s so ugly the clover is the only pretty due to the problem. dug out another large street trash can full of them and the roots , clumps of dirt attached. I could get another can full, but my yard already looks like an armadillo or a gopher attacked It. So my front yard area is half your back yard. I have same problem in my back yard , as big as your yard in vid. If this works , I’ll do it too. I’m going to buy exactly what you used and spray in the next few days . See results , and hope it’s ready to add some top soil in to the holes (lots of holes ) and add soil & seeds and kelp you mentioned in hopes to not need a new lawn! Oh and Yes, I screwed up , I have been digging out those deep rooted big round (crab grass I think )weeds with a shovel to get them out by the roots since last summer. Because I was sick of them coming right back . But I also have carried away grass and tons of soil in the process . Now I need more to help it out when I seed and I have full on dirt patches from all my ocd digging out those weeds trying to win the battle . I took my grass out too. I’ll follow your add soil tips I’m in hill country of Texas with clay clay clay soil . Thank you . I have tried it all. I hope this works . I’m ready to pour green cement over all of it and call it a hard lawn 😂 But my neighbors would hate me and I’m sure HOA would be slapping that red notice on my door !

😂 I liked the clover in my lawn but it too got taken over by crabgrass and was actually suffocating the grass. So I had some lawn company come out last year and it totally got rid of it. Only problem now is there are some areas that are bare or just completely void of grass. The areas that are down to just dirt however I'll blame my dog. He's a big ol 120lb puppy and went through a brief digging phase when he got excited. So now he's not allowed on the front lawn ever and he only goes in the back after he's had a good long walk and some training drills to get all of that pent up energy out first. 🧏🏻‍♀️Get a Canè Corso they said, it'll be fun they said. Lol not on the lawn if they're not properly exercised and supervised.

The “clover” you show with the yellow flower at 9:04 is oxalis, a tough little weed that nearly took over my lawn. I struggled with it for years, never fully controlling it until I converted from tall fescue to bermuda. Now I control weeds with Celsius which is very effective on oxalis. Big fan of your videos!

You need a pre-emergent to control oxalis.
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic 3 ай бұрын
I think you're right, that little flower there does look like oxalis not bur clover, prior to spraying I clearly had majority bur clover in the area because the plants actually had burrs growing off them. The leaf structure between oxalis and bur clover is very similar so it's certainly possible I mixed a few up when looking for weeds in the lawn. I have shown the burrs in this lawn a number of times on this channel dating back at least a year if not more. I'll have to be more careful to not assume what I'm seeing based on leaf appearance alone is bur clover when upon closer inspection some of it might actually be oxalis.

past couple of months I've been starting to send my miced audio through Adobe Podcast's Enhance Speech tool. It works wonders but this video is the first one where I filmed the audio in the backyard where it is quieter than out front so the tool must have performed even better back there with less background noise and nearly zero wind. I hope to do more backyard filming this year so hopefully this will be the audio more frequently this season. Thanks for noticing and noting the improvement.

In the spring, would you do this before putting down seed? Just bought my place and the lawn had been majorly neglected. Mostly weeds not much grass.

I mixed microclover in my back yard and love it, but some undesirables are creeping in. Will give straight 2,4-D a try on a section and see if I can target just those undesirables, leaving the clover to flourish. Thanks for sharing.

Don't do it. You will be sad. 2,4db on Amazon is what you want, aka Butyrac 200. It's not the same a 2,4d.

Tenacity won't kill microclover, but it's not the best post-emergent. I've sucessfully used it to control chickweed in my microclover-kbg-rye backyard.

I remember why 24db wasn't on my radar, it's a better herbicide for clover but it's restricted for sale to a lot of states, mine included. I can't buy it so the next best option is 24d.
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic 3 ай бұрын
Just as Tolfulnc said Butyrac 200 will be better for your situation but due to state restrictions you may or may not be able to buy it. Check, otherwise I still believe this is your next best option. Start with light app rates and spot treatments to make sure damage is tolerable.

We just planted clover in our garden area but a ton of Tribulus terrestris (aka goat heads) are also coming up. I never use chemicals but I am desperate. Will the 2-4-D kill the newly plnted clover as well as the Tribulus terrestris? Thank you 👍

I'm planning on overseeding fescue into the backyard soon. The PE would prevent me from doing that for a good long while. In the front main yard I did apply PE already, two months ago actually, early Feb

Halosulfuron is the active ingredient to look for. Still takes multiple applications over a full season most likely but it's your best bet even compared to glyphosate IMO. Check out this blog post I made on the topic with video and product options: turfmechanic.com/best-way-to-control-nutsedge/

I am very weak in my knowledge base regarding bentgrass. I don't grow it, haven't ever experimented with it either. Perhaps youtube.com/@jasonseiberlich could give you some advice. He's been managing a backyard green for a while now and I'm pretty sure he's running bentgrass.

I am trying to get rid of weeds before applying my 100% miniclover seeds to the soil. However, another article states, "Butyrac 200 commonly called 2-4-DB is the most commonly used herbicide for broadleaf control in clover plots. Pay attention to the DB in the name! This is NOT the same as the common 2-4-D herbicide, which will kill clover!" Can you comment as to the discrepancy?

That's sorrel... As someone who has managed clover plots, the information in this video is going to make for some very disappointed people. For anyone looking to cultivate clover in their lawn or grow a clover monostand. Look to the hunting forums as there is a wealth of information there on how to manage food plots. 2,4db NOT 2,4d is what you are looking for. 2,4d will wipe out most of the clover with is only a percentage growing back in the next spring or fall. If you have large areas of clover the information in this video will leave you large patches of bare spots for an extended amount of time. If anyone has come here looking for actual information on managing clover in a lawn, I'm happy to reply to any comments.

I will do more research on 24db this morning, just waking up now (west coast timezone) and edit this comment. I've looked into it before but never mentioned it in this video obviously. For clarity though I can guarantee you that target in this video is Medicago polymorpha which is commonly known around here as California Burrclover or Burr Medic. It is obviously not white clover or micro clover but related nevertheless. I have another video in the works on killing the same stuff. 😄 I do wish I had emphasized more clearly in this video that a light application or spot treatment would be best because of the risk of heavy damage but in my lawn it's clear there is still a lot of burr clover everywhere I sprayed. As I said, I'll edit this comment later this morning after I refresh on 24db. Thanks for all your input Tofulnc, perhaps research burr clover and edit your comment if feel it needs to be edited. 👊

@@TurfMechanic I'm quite certain at 9:00 what you are showing is Woodsorrel and not Burr medic or "Burr clover". Everything I said still stands. With that title you're going to have people finding this video who have planted miniclover or white clover. It's going to be a disaster to spray 2,4d on it. And you know it's going to be the people who don't read the label and just put a "splash" of concentrated 46% 2,4d in a spray jug and go to town on their clover....
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic 3 ай бұрын
I agree that that one looks a lot like the sorrel based on the open flower shape so it's very possible some of the others were also sorrel (oxalis for anyone else reading comments). I really believe though that young burr clover has that same heart leaf shape and as it matures the leaf starts taking the rounded shape with slightly jagged or serrated margin. I have a large patch of burr clover in the garden that I haven't dug up yet and the plants are all in various stages of maturity. Each young plant looks just like sorrell and as the plants get bigger and their leaves start getting more ragged, the stems start thickening up, burrs start growing, and the flowers start forming in a similar color but a different shape. Even the leaf veins are slightly different upon close inspection. This research has taken over my morning (I'm always interested in learning all these details and confirming where possible). About an hour ago I dug up one plant with the tap root intact and on that one plant the younger leaves looked heart shaped while the older leaves were starting to look longer (losing the heart shaped appearance). I also have a potted plant that I got from a nursery last year with different soil in it than my yard soil. In it some actual sorrel is growing along side the nursey plant we bought. It looks similar for sure but the vein structure in the leaf is different and the bud the flower grows out of is elongated like a little hotdog while the flowers emerging from burr clover look almost crinkled, same color but much different shape. Anyway, I'm am not perfect, it's possible I made an identification mistake but I don't think I did. If anything this has given me a great deep dive into the comparison of these two plants. I'm temped to make a video about this. Unfortunately videos like that tend to have very limited audiences of interest even though I think they are fascinating. As to your second point, you are probably right on that, most casual users of herbicides just estimate, don't precisely measure, and rarely use low doses. I may have to do some post-production editing of the title/description/links/content to limit that a touch. Thanks again!
