The 1x1 Rib Cable Cast On provides a sturdy, elastic edge to hats, sweater hems, and sleeve cuffs knitted in 1x1 ribbing and smoothly sets up your stitch pattern as you cast on. Learn how to work this handy cast on with our tutorial!
(If you hold your working yarn Continental-style (in the left hand), be sure to bring the yarn around to the front for a purl stitch or around to the back for a knit stitch after placing the new stitch on the left needle and before inserting the right needle between stitches to make the next stitch - see our Rib Cable Cast On tutorial for Continental style here: • How to Knit: 1x1 Rib C... .)
0:18 Beginning with a Knit Stitch
Make a slip knot on L needle to begin.
Insert R needle purlwise into slip knot and purl a new stitch. Place new stitch on L needle.
*Insert R needle from the front between the first and second stitch on the L needle, wrap strand of yarn around R needle as you would for a knit stitch and pull through, place this new loop onto L needle, insert R needle from behind the L needle between the first and second stitch on the L needle, wrap strand of yarn around R needle as you would for a purl stitch and pull through, place this new loop onto L needle; repeat from * until required number of stitches have been cast on, ending with a knit stitch if casting on an odd number of stitches.
After last stitch has been cast on: If last stitch cast on was a knit stitch, slip last stitch purlwise to R needle, bring working yarn to front between needles, return last stitch to L needle and pull working yarn snugly. If last stitch cast on was a purl stitch, slip last stitch purlwise to R needle, bring working yarn to back between needles, return last stitch to L needle and pull working yarn snugly. Repositioning the working yarn in this way creates a cleaner edge at the end of your cast-on row.
If using this method to cast on stitches to a piece in progress, omit the slipknot and begin at *.

Interesting. I always twist the loop before placing it on the needle. I’m certain that’s how other videos for the cable cast on show it.

Thanks for the video. Is there a reason why this would be used over a long-tail cast on? When knitting a sweater that requires a 1x1 next band, can this be used in place of long tail without affecting elasticity?

I used this cast on just as shown in the video for for a scarf I'm knitting for my husband and I really like the finished look. I'm a knitting newbie so I have a question about binding off which I'm finally ready to do...lol. The scarf is in 1x1 rib with chain stitches along the edge...I think it's called a double selvage (?). Any suggestions about which bind off I should use so both ends look the same? Thanks

Hi Karen! Finishing a scarf is an ACHIEVEMENT! Congrats! A regular bind off in pattern (knit your knits, purl your purls, remember to move your yarn to front/back accordingly) is a good match for a ribbed cable cast on - you may want to bind off using a larger needle to keep your bind off nice and stretchy. (TechKnitter has a good post on keeping your last bind off stitch looking tidy: techknitting.blogspot.com/2008/12/ordinary-chain-bind-off-part-1-binding.html ) Alternatively, you can use a sewn bind off for 1x1 rib - Purl Soho has a nice video here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i79gq6iJnKeagoU.html

Hey , the second time you knitted, did you place your right needle inside of the second stitch on the left needle (basic knit), or did you place it in between the two stitches, and if so what's the pattern?
@BrooklynTweed_Official
@BrooklynTweed_Official Жыл бұрын
Hi Tyrielle! Yes, the Rib Cable Cast On is worked by placing your needle in between the first two stitches on the needle each time - to make a knit stitch, insert the needle from the front, to make a purl stitch, insert the needle from the back. (See the video description for full instructions!)

OK - have come back to this cast on after reverting to long tail alternating! My problem is that once I have cast on all my stitches for my hat pattern (which requires knit1 purl ribbing, in that order) and go to join the round, my first stitch on the left needle now is a purl and I need a knit. Why? Is it because I am gong through the back of the stitches? So should I in fact be casting on with purl first? totally confused...
@BrooklynTweed_Official
@BrooklynTweed_Official Жыл бұрын
Great question! Ribbed cable cast-on can be a bit confusing in this way because you'll turn your work before joining (unlike long-tail), so all your stitches will be reversed. So yes! If you need round 1 to start with a knit, cast on starting with a purl.

@@BrooklynTweed_Official Thank you! My brain hurts now but I have spent the past couple of days trying to figure it out - which I did through trial and error. Thanks for confirming it. BTW my new problem is how to Bind Off in Alternating Cable. I've only found one video but it is not in the round and advises taking needle out of stitch when moving yarn from front to back if using circular needles - although, can't it just be passed over the top end of the needle as always?

also, how do you join the round?
@BrooklynTweed_Official
@BrooklynTweed_Official Жыл бұрын
You can use your preferred method of joining, or simply knit into the first stitch & use your yarn tail to sew up any gap that's left over. Here's an interesting tutorial that has you cast on one extra stitch for joining: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hquHkplmu9SdZ3U.html

If I am asked to cast on 43 stitches, as in Sonobe sweater pattern, does the first slip stitch count as a stitch?

@BrooklynTweed_Official
@BrooklynTweed_Official Жыл бұрын
Hi Georgia! The slip knot will be your first stitch in pattern - if you purl your second stitch, the slip knot counts as a knit, if you knit your second stitch, your slip knot counts as a purl.

@@BrooklynTweed_Official but when joining you have to turn the work over and then you're knitting into the back of the stitches which turns you first knit into a purl. I'm still trying to get to the bottom of this and no one seems to have an answer.

@@georgiamorandi5795 You're absolutely correct! Unlike long-tail cast on, you'll turn your work, so start with the reverse of what you want round 1 to be.
