Double Gradient Boomerang Shawl
by Yay For Yarn
Skill Level: Advanced Beginner
Yarn:*
About 5 ounces / 140 grams of Gradient or Self-striping yarn (with very long stripes) in Color A. I used Bernat Pop in 'Scarlet Sizzle'.
About 5 ounces / 140 grams of Gradient or Self-striping yarn (with very long stripes) in Color B. I used Bernat Pop in 'Blue Blaze'.
*The yarn requirements given are not precise, as this pattern can be done in any size or any weight category of yarn. Different yarns / yarn weight categories will have a different number of yards per ounce / gram. The Bernat Pop I used is #4 Worsted Weight. Both yarns must be in the same weight category.
Needles:
40” (101.6 cm) circular knitting needle, in a size appropriate for the yarn you are using. I suggest using the size needle that is recommended on your yarn label or slightly larger. I used a US size 8 needle.
You will also need:
Scissors
Yarn Needle or Blunt Tapestry Needle
This pattern is intended for your personal use only. You may not share it, copy it, sell it, give it away, or mass-produce the finished product. However, you may sell the finished items on a small scale, as long as you convey in your item description that you used a Yay For Yarn pattern.

Love this pattern and use it a lot. The double gradient is beautiful! FYI I prefer a stretchy bind off because it keeps all three sides equal. My favorite bind off is k2tog, slip that stitch back onto the left needle then k2tog, and repeat.

I forgot to include k2tog tbl in the easy, stretchy bind off. K2 together through the back loop, slip that stitch back on to the left needle then repeat k2togtbl.

- Great! I’m not so good at knitting, but I want to make this shawl. Just have to get some yarn for it, plus a set of knitting needles. I usually crochet. I didn’t knit or crochet for about 25 years, started again some years ago. So much has happened with krocheting and knitting in these years! And KZfaq tutorials are so great to watch and then make the project. I’m in Heaven... 😃 /Lisbeth from Sweden 🇸🇪

I have just completed my second of this pattern. Thank you for the tutorial on this technique of increasing and decreasing for the shape to be achieved. I used Lion Brand Landscapes on the first in two contrasting color blends...Volcano (rich deep reds/purples/rust/blues) and Blue Lagoon (deep rich blues/greens). The yarn in those colors created a really artsy piece in gorgeous bright colors that I always steer away from in my wardrobe. The Shawl will bring in a hyper-dose of color to my winter outfits. The bind off was too tight even though I really was conscious of my tension while binding off. My completed length was approx 70 inches using the two skeins in totality on us 8 needles. The second that I just finished now, I chose a different take on yarn colors and tried a different bind off. I selected two cakes from my treasured stash of Caron Latte Cakes in the Blueberry colorway on size 13 needles. I made certain to select two cakes that began with different shades in the variations of blues. What it created was a very tonal version that is quite pleasing to the eye and more subdued for days when one feels less adventuresome with colors. I used 80 grams from each cake (approx 176 yards x 2), leaving enough for two more scarves from those cakes. It left me with 84 inches along the top so it is very generous and fluffy. I might even try this once more with even larger needles for something even larger and more airy to be able to wrap it several times for the coldest days. I recommend the bind off I used on the second one...no tightness at all...as stretchy as the rest of the garter stitch scarf/shawl. I began my cast off row by knitting first stitch and second stitch. With 2 stitches on my right needle I knit those 2 stitches through the back loop by inserting my left needle in front of right needle from left to right, and complete knit stitch. Knit the next stitch from the left needle and knit through the back loop again on the 2 stitches on the right needle. To give credit where due, I learned this bind off technique from Very Pink here on YT. I believe her tutorial title is Very Stretchy Bind Off. It worked very well for this application. Thanks again, this is an easy to use pattern when one needs to be able to knit on “cruise control”. I will keep it my “go to” projects.

Your color choices in this shawl turned out so beautiful. I would never have expected that and honestly probably would have never chosen those two to go together in a project. This video in particular, specifically your colorway choices in this project, came to mind recently when I was choosing yarn for an afghan I'm making soon. I was a bit more daring than I normally would have been. Medium smoke grey, plum variegated, and butter yellow yarn ended up in my cart and I'm so excited to get started on this. Thanks for your inspiration in being a bit more adventurous with my color choices.

Hi! I love to knit because I just like to be creative. With knitting, I can play with color, texture, style, and squishy yarn! Knitting is just one of the creative outlets I enjoy. I also love crocheting, sewing, baking, doodling, and quilting. (Especially free-motion quilting!) I have also dabbled in cross stitch, embroidery, sculpting polymer clay, paper-crafting, and jewelry-making. I find anything crafty or creative to be relaxing and fun, and I love any opportunity to make something unique!

Hi!! Am new to knitting. Do I need 2 different colors to make this project or can I use only 2 skeins of the same color? Thanks love your tutorial.
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Rosita! You can do this with 2 skeins of the same color. However, to make sure you don't end up with the same colors overlapping, I would suggest using the center-pull end of one skein and the outside end of the second skein. So you would start with the first color of one skein and the last color of the second skein. This would give a similar look as if you were using two colorways. Otherwise, if you begin with the same end of both skeins, you won't get the double-gradient effect. You will just get sections of solid colors as if you were only using one skein. Hope this helps!

Hi Marie. If you look at the photo in this post of the shawl laying flat, yayforyarn.com/double-gradient-boomerang-shawl-free-knitting-pattern/ you can see the direction the stripes go. The stripes make it easier to see how the shawl is constructed. The cast on corner is at the right, and the bind off edge is the edge that runs from the center point of the shawl to the left corner. I hope this helps!

How do you decrease on the other side? Thank you. ❤❤

Hi. The decrease stitch at the end of row 1 is a knit 2 together, abbreviated K2tog. This is done by knitting through 2 stitches at once, by inserting the needle through 2 stitches instead of 1, and then pulling a new loop of yarn through both stitches as though you were making a regular knit stitch. I hope this helps!
