Step-by-step instructions on knitting the tubular cast-on. Perfect for 1x1 rib stitch

The tubular cast-on creates a super stretchy edge for ribbing that appears as if the ribs appear out of nothing. it's that invisible. It's a very simple combination of an Italian cast-on followed by two rows in double-stockinette stitch and this tutorial will show you exactly how to knit it.
I will also show you how to knit the tubular cast-on in the round and how to graft one stitch to close the gap for a super invisible edge.

Thank you so much! Other videos were using crochet needles and scrap yarn and I was so confused, but this is so much more simple. I've also done this several times because it didn't look right and finally figured out I was twisting my first row of stiches. I wish I had found this video first, it would have saved me so much time and frustration ❤

Thank you! I watched a tutorial, by one of the "big name" knitters. They start of showing how great it is for hats. But the tutorial was entirely for doing it flat, and didn't even explain how to do it in the round. Your video is so much better!!

Great tutorial! I'm mentaly preparing for this techniqe for my next sweater. You said clockwise, while it is anti-clockwise, but the explenantion why we do it this way is perfectly reasonable and memorable. Thank you for using contrasting colors in the video and a great sharp closeup - so importaint in tutorials! Greetings from Poland! 💜

My favorite method, paired with tubular bind off, for necklines, cuffs, etc. I generally use needles 3-4 sizes smaller than the body of work to eliminate flaring.
@nimbleneedlestwo
@nimbleneedlestwo 2 жыл бұрын
yeah, that can be a good option - because often a bit of stretchiness is what you want - but not too much ^^

yes...i agree and that's why I kind of don't like it. years and years ago when I was first shown this method, the teacher didn't mention that you can join in the round later on as well..my..that was...difficult :(

Thanks a lot. My book is good, but its description of casting on the knit stitch wasnt clear nor supported by a photo, so i was very unsure. Plus the 2x2 version, and the tidying up the loose join stitch in the round were really valuable bonuses.

Thank you for another great tutorial. You always make things seem so much easier! Could you do a tutorial on how to do the tubular cast on with a peovisional row at the beginning? I think you're turning the needle counter-clockwise (anti-clockwise) after casting on. Demo doesn't match the verbal description, but I think anti-clockwise as shown is the right way. Top notch video though, thank you!

Thank you so much. One question-I did a cable cast on using waste yarn. Why 2 or 4 rows before beginning 1x1 rib? What about 3 or 5 rows?
@nimbleneedlestwo
@nimbleneedlestwo Жыл бұрын
well...you can basically do whatever you prefer. However, you are basically knitting double stockinette stitch there. And this has a 2-row repeat. so 3 or 5 leaves it incomplete.

A little question on 2x2 cast on in the round, I'm in need of a little clarification. Does it go as follows? 1. 1x1 Italian cast on, then 2 rounds double stockinette, then rearrange stitches for 2x2 rib, THEN join in the round OR 2. 1x1 Italian cast on, then 2 rounds double stockinette, then join in the round, THEN rearrange stitches for 2x2 rib?
@nimbleneedlestwo
@nimbleneedlestwo Жыл бұрын
there is no or here. You can do both. Whatever you feel comfortable with. Of course, the repeat for the double stockinette will be "different" - once in the round and once knit flat. (the gap will be larger or smaller and thus the way to close it as well)
@sawyersmith6814
@sawyersmith6814 4 ай бұрын
the pattern i’m using (and other videos i’ve seen) say to start with waste yarn. is there a reason you don’t? would this change the need for a smaller needle? are they interchangeable techniques? thanks!
@nimbleneedlestwo
@nimbleneedlestwo 3 ай бұрын
there are multiple ways to knit this cast-on. It's essentially a form of double knitting. So you can start with waste-yarn and pick stitches up again. I find that a bit cumbersome.

Hi Norman Do you have a trick for no curl cast on for stockinette stitch. Tried with an i-cord but still i have to iron press it very hard and it will still like to curl. Sincerely vib
@nimbleneedlestwo
@nimbleneedlestwo Жыл бұрын
it's not the edge that curls...its stockinette stitch itself...you cannot not let it curl. It's like when you have natural curls (hair)...you can straighten things but at the end of the day it will always bounche back.
