How to work "(k1, yo, k1) into the same stitch." This double increase is sometimes abbreviated "kyok." The result is a little cluster of three stitches originating from one stitch.

Eureka! I could not figure it out and could not find it in any of my source books either. I have been knitting for several years and never came across that direction. Thank you so much!

The only problem I have with this stitch is the giant hole that’s left over after you work those three stitches. Is there a way to get rid of it?

I think most designers see the giant hole as a feature. 😉It's usually there for a reason--often as part of a lace pattern or a stretchy-ish edge for a shawl. A kfbf would be a more closed increase, but it will be a little lumpy and still visible in stockinette. (Slipping the last st "f" rather than knitting it will smooth it out a little.) A (yo, k1, yo) where you purl the yarnovers through the back on the WS will increase 2 and close up the holes. Using a backwards loop-type of m1 will give the same effect as the "yokyo" without having to ptbl on the WS row: (m1, k1, m1). Either of those two options will have visible twisted sts, but the holes will be mostly closed. Any time you change the increases, you'll want to be mindful of what comes before and after the kyok in the pattern. You wouldn't want the alternative increase to interfere with any yarnovers or other sts next to it.

Have you ever seen a pattern that asks for the reverse of this (yo, k1, yo) in the stitch? I'm looking at one now with those instructions but I think it's a mistake and should be a KYOK right? Because it's giving me a triple, wonky increase as it's currently written. And when I google YOKYO I'm only getting tons of information about Tokyo...

I think it's probably a mistake. (Yo, k1, yo) in the same stitch would be like traditional lace knitting. The parentheses and "in the same stitch" wouldn't be necessary. This should still only result in a double increase, however. There is one case I can think of where it might not be a mistake. Some shawls have this increase at the very edge; you would yo before knitting the first stitch. But even that type of increase shouldn't really be written that way. Some designers offer pattern support and will answer questions. It wouldn't hurt to send a message to ask for clarification. Good luck!

How on earth can you knit with the yarn over your left hand like that??? Its totally incomprehensible, I don't knopw one single person who knits like that and you can't demonstrate a stich properly on youtube doing that, it does my head in sorry!

This is called Continental-style knitting, which is actually quite common. I'm sorry that I forgot to show how to work the stitch worked in English-style (with yarn in the right hand).

It's how I knit, so I really appreciate the few videos that show continental knitting, aka, "picking." It's a much faster way of knitting than the "throwing" method, which I can't wrap my head around. When you find a continental knitter, maybe they can teach you the method.😊
