This video shows you everything you need to know about knitting socks two at a time. This a fun technique where you will knit two identical socks and never have to fight second-sock syndrome.
All you need is a circular knitting needle 40"inches or longer and enough yarn - the rest is an ingenious technique.
Basically, it's the standard magic loop technique - you only need a little trick to cast on for socks two at a time and another trick for the heel. The rest is literally the same

two-at-a-timing saves me every time. did that with socks, adapted it to sweater sleeves (did sleeves for a bottom-up sweater, currently doing sleeves for a top-down sweater two at a time, because otherwise i would just never finish them *ever*.) Love your channel, you're a great teacher with true passion for your craft!

Thank you, as a major sufferer of second sock syndrome (I have ADD, finishing anything is difficult enough, but somehow making pairs of things is extra hard) I’d love to learn this, and your videos are very helpful for me. I am Swedish so I knit the same way as you do, the European style or whatever it’s called. In fact, this video gave me the motivation I needed to pick up my latest project again and get going!

Don't think of it as ADD. 😂Just like me, you are very creative, and repeatedly doing the same thing soon bores us. I knit, crochet, sew, blah blah, plus, I'm an artist and photographer. Just as I'd never take multiple photos of the exact same scene, or paint multiple pictures of the exact same scene, I just cannot do any patterns exactly the same way multiple times. I must change something to make it fresh and new to my senses. I'll change the hook size, yarn, sequence of rows that create a different pattern, etc, so doing 2 socks, 2 gloves, etc, is not my thing. I don't have ADD or OCD (not enough for it to be a problem anyway😅) But, having 2 of a thing on a circular needle feels like I'm doing only 1, or 2 pieces of 1, and it eases me, so I can complete two at the same time. One of the biggest obstacles for me is putting the work down and then picking it up later. My tension may be tighter or looser, so the socks or mittens don't match well enough to suit me unless I'm doing them together on a circular needle. No doubt you are going to love doing two at a time of socks, gloves, mittens, earrings, etc etc. Knit happily, Little Sunflower!😉🤣❤

@NimbleNeedles Norman, you have taught me soooo much with your tutorials! Truly, I appreciate your knowledge, your willingness to share, the tranquility of your voice, and the confidence you show as your stitches glide from needle to needle. I'm 76, taught myself to knit at age 59, and love it. Thanks to KZfaq, your channel appeared in my feed, and I've spent hours watching and absorbing as much as I can from you. Earlier this year, I had a stroke, and it affected my right arm, not so noticeable until I picked up my needles, and there was absolutely no muscle memory in my arm. I was trying to knit somewhere between Continental and American.... which simply did not connect. I can crochet just fine, but I learned that when I was 16. Thanks to your videos, I've watched you knitting different ways, and now, I've got it again! Norman, I'll always be grateful to you for restoring my knitting ability. Thank-you, my friend. JOY. 😘

Thanks Norman! I usually knit TAAT. However, i haven't CO at the same time until today! I have always CO separately on dpns and slipped them onto my magic loop with the beginning of round on the right-hand side to start with. Next pair, I'll have to give this version a try remembering where the beginning of round for each sock actually is. Once I got used to TAAT, it seemed to be the natural way to knit socks. To the casual observer who doesn't knit, TAAT makes one look like a genius magician!

I just tried making my first 2aat socks toe up and kind of enjoyed it. I wish I had had your tip about pinning the socks together to stop them sliding apart on the needles. I love the description of the "magic loop dance". I tend to think of it as the "magic loop shuffle" but yours seems a lot more positive so am going to try to think of it that way. I will also be giving top down 2aat a go now having seen this now. It seems so much simpler than I thought❤

I made a spindle for drawing yarn from both the outside and the inside of a skein by causing it to spin when pulling from the outside. It's a bit hard to get the skein centered on the spindle, but as you pull from the inside it becomes less of a problem. I used a long knitting needle as my spindle and had it sticking up through a small storage box that I had heavy stuff from other crafting material in. To this box I attached some guide loops made of coat hanger wire, one above the center of the skein the other about mid height to it for the end coming off the outside. I think that the yarn cake would go on easier because you can be sure that the spindle needle isn't running on the wrong side of a strand of yarn.

Hi Norman. Great video! You explain things so well! The only socks I’ve ever made have been 2 at a time top down but on 2 separate circulars. My yarn was forever twisting! Your tip on this is fantastic! I think the advantages for me would be consistent gauge and finishing them together. I tried doing a toe up sock a while back and I just couldn’t get gauge. I bought the smallest needles and tried but it was still too large. I see so many patterns and videos done with sock yarn but I like making worsted weight wool for my husband to keep him warm. It’s frustrating trying to find a decent pattern. Thank you for another fantastic video!🤗❤️

Thank you, I don’t have a problem with SSS, but do have a problem getting the same number of rows for the different sections so I have been wondering how to do 2AAT socks. So I appreciated this video. Am I right in assuming if you do a regular flap and gusset heel you can just continue across both socks knitting back and forth flat?
@NimbleNeedles
@NimbleNeedles 9 ай бұрын
I originally had that info included but thr video just got too long. Basically you knit it the same way. First one heel flap, turn...and then you pick up stitches from the left side...switch to the other sock, knit the heel flap, turn the heel, pick up from the left side, knit across, switch to other sock, pick up from the right side of the flap...etc ☺️

When I knit TAAT I actually knit each cuff separately by itself and then put both on the longer circular to work the remainder of the socks. Getting the cuff done TAAT from the cast on can just be so fiddly I think it is much faster to knit each cuff, say 20-30 rounds separately.

I think I would find it just a bit too fiddly to do two at a time like this. I do however like to do two at a time using two 9 inch circulars.

You mean, with two separate projects/needles

two 9 inch circular needles with each having one sock of a pair of socks cast on and knit at same time, I usually divide it up and do cuffs on one then the other, legs on one then the other, etc.@@NimbleNeedles

I usually find your videos super helpful but I just can't understand this. Maybe it's because I use a knitted cast on.

well...i am not sure I can follow? Why are you using a knitted cast-on?

@@NimbleNeedles TBH it's the only cast on that I use. Also, the yarn I'm using is a lace weight and probably too fiddly for this technique.

@@Therese504 well, typically you try a new technique with bigger needles first and the way it is shown and then you bring in your own variations - at least that is how I approach things! Still, if you have any pointers that would have increased charity, share them anytime ☺️

Cat Bordhi has a better way. You cast on using the magic cast on, then knit using ball yarn and tail. Automatically increased and all you have to do is couch the yarn in the next few stitches and cut. So easy. I miss Cat so much.

Different ppl always prefer different things. That's what I love about knitting. What one finds hard or needlessly complicated another finds easy.

@@NimbleNeedlesSo true- we all work differently and think differently. I began two at a time sock knitting with one ball. I struggled with the tangle factor! (To make it worse I was using two colors.) Next pair I took the time to make separate balls - so much easier for me!
