Step-by-step instructions on how to knit Judy's magic cast-on the super easy way for beginners - perfect for starting socks toe-up

Judy's magic cast-on is an easy and utterly seamless way to start socks toe-up. It's a very simple variation of the Italian cast-on and so easy to knit (and I guess that's why it's so popular). In this video I show you two alternative ways to knit it with the exact same outcome. So you get to decide which version you like best. Enjoy

FINALLY!!! Someone who actually shows how to do it so you don't have to knit through the back loop! I've shown all of my beginning knitters that way as they always forget to knit in the back loop when I'm not sitting right there. Now I can give them a video to bookmark!

Thank you for clearly explaining the differences in how/why people wrap the yarn the way they do with this cast-on method. I had seen 3 different videos each with their own variation and was frustrated about which one was right, but you addressed them all here and now I can choose the one I prefer. Thank you!

Hi Norman. Great tutorial! Thanks for showing us all the different ways to do this as well as the provisional cast on. I don’t like a slip knot either. I also prefer to do this cast on where the stitches are all properly oriented, although knitting the first row through the back loop really is no big deal. Thanks again. Very thorough! Have a wonderful week!🤗😊

Thank you Norman for the always great videos! I was wondering, would you be able to show how to do it on DPNs? I'd like to make some toe up socks but I just hate knitting in the round with circular needles! Thank you in advance 💖
@nimbleneedlestwo
@nimbleneedlestwo Жыл бұрын
but it's the exact same thing. I mean you just hold those two needles parallel and cast-on those stitches. ANd then, as you knit across you just join in a second needle when you reach the center. So you start with the same two needles and join in the other 2 in the first round.

I'm kind of beginner in magic loop and now want to try judy's cast-on. I was confused after a few video's because I saw people doing differnt things. You cleared that up !!! One thing I don't understand is the difference with magic loop when you do cuff down. You always pull out the back needle and knit the front needle. Here you knit the back needle with the front needle. Do I keep doing this all the way up to the cuff?
@nimbleneedlestwo
@nimbleneedlestwo Жыл бұрын
there is really no difference. However, you can hold your project upside down or knit it inverted. But that boils down to preferences. For some, one method or the old yields a better stitch definition and fewer ladders.

Thank you, Norman! This looks great! I might be making it more complicated, but when I use this, am I counting just the stitches on 1 needle, or the total stitches combine on both needles?

both needles combined (except you want to use it as a provisional cast on).

Where is the end of the working yarn at the beginning of the tutorial? Am I missing where we're told to use the end length for the top or the bottom? At the end of my making stitches I'm told the ball is supposed to be attached but that isn't what's happening so I assume I'm doing this with the working yarn reversed. Thanks for the info on how to turn to start the first row which several other tutorials omit and everything falls apart.

it says pick up the yarn the way you would for a standard longtail caston. so the tail is on the side of your thumb.

wonderful demo but you don't address when you start which finger holds the tail and which the working yarn don't know the "regular" way??? Sorry for seeing this a bit too late. I always hold the tail around my thumb. THat being said, it doesn't really matter and some people will show you this technique with the tail around their index finger.

thank you I will wtch again with that in mind somehow I lose the rhythm and find two in a row on the same needle, the idea of alternate needles and alternate fingers somehow throws me . I had a great video by Knitting Circle but it is only for Premium members which I no longer am they said some kind of wording mantra with it so I didn't get lost.Your guidance is always helpful but this time still confused. I will practice it. thanx again.@@nimbleneedlestwo
