This video knitting tutorial will help you learn how to knit the alternating cable cast on. This technique for starting a project is similar to the cable cast on. It creates a nice durable edge, but has be adapted for ribbing. It's horizontal stretch make it perfect for hat brims and sock and sweater sleeve cuffs.

Why do you twist the loop when you place the yarn on the right-hand needle? In some other videos, there is no twisting of the loop/

I really appreciate you including the information about needing to cast on an uneven number of stitches. I see why I will want to do that. However, if I need to cast on 136 stitches and I cast on 137 so that my last cast on stitch is a purl, can I get rid of the first cast on stitch somehow to get back to the 136 stitches that I will need to work in the round? My other alternative is the tubular long tail cast on, and I'm really trying to avoid that method. I'm working on my first hat in a fingering weight yarn.

+Emma Chowns maybe one of his other videos will help. In his invisible join video, for knitting in the round, he casts on an extra stitch, which goes away when he finishes the join. So 136 + 1 = 137, then when you make the join it will go back to 136.

Yes, it does (sorry, I realise this answer comes four years after the question, and you have probably worked it out for yourself by now!) I followed this very helpful video to cast on for a knitted-in-the-round, top-down jumper and it's excellent for a really stretchy neckline.
