To me, the one gaping problem is the underlying assumption that the group around you is an accurate or a reliable measure of a person - that society, ultimately, is a reliable measure of a person. What if society is itself insane in the exact way this video would define insanity? If society is the standard, then insanity is sanity. Reality is, in effect, its own opposite if society's unrealistic expectations are the best way to measure reality. I do truly love that he pointed out the fact, almost as a totally separate point, that teaching kids to just trade in their low "self-esteem" for narcissism is nuts. This compromise rules our school district and those districts immediately around where I live. I do think that a truly depressed individual will give insane individuals in their lives, or our insane society the authority that JP says we should give it as the measuring stick. It is self-evident that you will NOT get a sane view of one's self this way. Conversely, narcissism removes ALL second points of reference, leading to the elimination of an entire dimension from that person's view of reality; which, of course, leads to a similar result...an erroneous view of that same self. He has diagnosed causes of depression incredibly well, and was right to point out how dumb it is to just trade one bad self-examination disorder for another. Loved that! His prescription for trust in groups of others without describing that the group must be "sane" for it to work is a mistake. I suppose I would argue that most people have no basis to achieve "sanity." All of the indicators the world has to offer are themselves, nuts! For me, this is a big why for faith. Since I've ruled the whole planet out as reliable measuring sticks, myself ruled out first, the best shot I have is to at least try to look beyond the perfect sea of insanity in favor of that which I cannot see. If I find something useful, yay me! If not...if this lunatic assylum is all that there is, there's simply no point and nothing is lost if I get it wrong. Besides failure to support pushy agendas, I just don't see the downside.

I think it is deeper than that. I think it is the knowledge, gained from experience, that you can deal with whatever life throws at you.

I don't know about you should rate your self esteem based on how those around you see you. I would agree with that if those around you were reasonable human beings... but there are alot of toxic environments out there. If you are in one of those toxic environments that will give you a skewed view of yourself.......

"how those around you see you" is the wrong part. it's "how those around you PERCIEVE you..." it's not good enough to only visualize them, how do they reciprocate to your world views and actions.

@@kantraxoikol6914 have you ever been in a toxic environment? I believe we need to consider the source. I like Jordan Peterson but this bothers me. There are all types of personalities - and personality disorders in the world. If you are dealing with a narcissist and you base your self esteem on how the narcissist reciprocates to your world view - you are going to believe that you are a piece of crap. I have experienced other personalities that would seriously cause you damage. Have you never experienced extremely insecure people who would bring you down just so they don't feel so inadequate??? If the statement was qualified with saying "reasonably sane people around you" I would agree 100%

Based on this is it sane to do things which would benefit your family beyond yourself and to the degree that some would say you have prepared to an "insane" level. Am I living with fear (I still recall the nuclear late 70's to early 90's) and it seems back or am I living a rational possible reality? I do not think that I have ever thought of loss of power for a protracted period as much as I have of recent though that said, Within 10 years, I've lived through two (2), once in a generation floods ..which destroyed power et al for extended periods.

Seems like hs is confusing sanity for happiness. Someone can be perfectly sane even if their child is clinically depressed. It might affect their happiness, but not their sanity.

the social group/community/work place can be skewed/corrupted - not every social or economic or political entity or family is a genuine meritocracy so these definitions are off - sometimes persons who are not highly valued are in fact the most valuable in a community and sometimes the most talented do not rise to their place in the hierarchy of systems/groups because of systemic malfunction/cronyism jealousy/narcissism

I'm going to say that almost nothing said here makes any sense. The definition of sanity is too individualistic? Sanity is actually a pretty individual thing. And yes it's part of you and your psyche. So, not off to a good start here. What constitutes sanity is somewhat based on societal norms. But it's mostly based on how well you function and how well your perception of the world resembles reality. For instance, if I believed that I was Napoleon Bonaparte, I would not be sane. Because that would be contrary to reality. Although, aside from clinical sanity, there are other levels. For instance, two people could be clinically sane, but one could be more rational than the other. Or maybe one has fewer problems in his life. And what he said about self-esteem is largely off the wall. First, you should love yourself unconditionally. That's the starting point. Then because you want what's best for yourself, you honestly evaluate how you are doing and what improvements could be made. Loving yourself isn't conditional upon other people's approval. But honesty is part of any loving relationship. Including the one you have with yourself. A person with good self-esteem, doesn't beat themselves up over anything. They just see problems to solve and ways to make improvements. They have things to think about but nothing to worry about. Being a terrible person or having a terrible life shouldn't make you feel bad about yourself. It should just give you a desire to become a better person and to improve your life. As for depression, I can only talk about my personal experience. But depression is when a person punishes themselves for a perceived crime they have committed. The problem is that the punishment doesn't fit the crime. There is nothing they could possibly have done that would make them deserving of that torment. War criminals are treated more humanely.

I don’t know what the heck this is, but I don’t think it matches with Mr Peterson’s profile. So, this is either a deep fake or reverse psychology; at least, I hope for him that he doesn’t mean what he says here. Let’s pretend this is what it looks like, and comment. In a nutshell- it’s utter nonsense. Mr Peterson is very keen on the Abrahamic religions (a paradigm I do not share), therefore he would diagnose Jesus or an even better example, Abraham, as clinically insane because neither of them fit within their environment. Same goes for those very few dissidents who oppose tyrannical regimes or are whistleblowers in their organisations. Nevertheless, this material raises few important points such as ‘self- esteem’. Whereas feedback from others is vital not just in a work situation, I believe that somebody’s self- esteem should not be contingent on others, not even any ‘god’. I think that everybody should have healthy self- esteem knowing/ positing their inalienable intrinsic value just because they are a human being. Sadly, I don’t think many know any longer what a human being is, in the utter confusion about values. It’s really bizarre to see Mr Peterson emphasising the social factors in the mini-analysis of two concepts that I see as primarily psychological, given that he seems to do the opposite, in general (at least his other materials I’ve watched) 🤨

Peterson is talking out of his ass again. This whole little confused rant is predicated on the ASSUMPTION that any and all social structures available to you are full of sane people. If society, and specifically western society's beliefs are insane (a car is a necessity for example), then it would be impossible to have a genuine relationship with anybody in a social system where one disagrees with foundational beliefs. To use another example: female circumcision ( or male for that matter) and Sharia Law. Considered sane and righteous around some, yet barbaric and backwards to others. Sanity, if such a thing actually exists, is not blind cultural conformity as Peterson suggests. Sanity is nothing more than matching one's beliefs to one's actions, even when one's beliefs are errant.
