"Hello everyone! Welcome back to 'Talky'! If you're new here, I'm Layla. Today, we're going to dive into 10 common English idioms that you'll often hear in conversations. These phrases are perfect whether you're just starting to learn English or you're trying to sound more like a native speaker. Let's get started!
What is an Idiom?
Idioms are phrases where the words together have a different meaning than the dictionary definitions of the individual words. They add color and fun to the way we speak. Ready to learn some? Here we go!
Idiom #1 - Back to the drawing board
When something you tried does not succeed, and you have to begin planning again from the beginning. For example, 'Looks like it's back to the drawing board.'
Idiom #2 - Think outside the box
Solve a problem in a way that is not usual or ordinary. For example, 'We really thought outside the box on that project!'
Idiom #3 - Red tape
Dealing with a lot of rules, paperwork, and official procedures. For example, 'There's so much red tape involved in this process.'
Idiom #4 - Hit the books
Start studying very hard. For example, 'I can't go out tonight, I need to hit the books.'
Idiom #5 - Blowing off steam
Get rid of stress or tension. For example, 'I just needed to blow off some steam.'
Idiom #6 - Get the ball rolling
Start something important or big. For example, 'Let’s get the ball rolling by discussing our main goals.'
Idiom #7 - Call it a day
Decide to stop working on something for the day. For example, 'Let's call it a day.'
Idiom #8 - Under the weather
Not feeling well. For example, 'I can't come to work today, I'm feeling under the weather.'
Idiom #9 - Over the moon
Extremely happy or delighted about something. For example, 'I'm over the moon about it!'
Idiom #10 - Burn the midnight oil
Stay up very late working hard on something. For example, 'I've been burning the midnight oil preparing for this presentation.'
