For me I studied Chinese hsk 1-4 in class but I realised i still didn’t achieve much in text book, then I went on an unorthodox route of learning which was watching vlogs of daily life and writing down words I don’t know, within a year my Chinese about hsk6 level even without doing the exam and I am proficient enough, it’s all about interest at the end of the day..

@@sufiavlogs277 yeah, all true, I used to watch street interviews in chinese and write down words I don’t know at the same time improving my listening towards how locals speak(totally vital), I would watch real life videos too because you get to listen to more colloquial words or phrases. I would also watch interviews in vlogs in English and I if I listen to a word in English whose translation I don’t know in Chinese I would write down. I also used friends too

I speak 16 languages at different levels. 14 are at the maintaining stage. I watch a video on youtube in each of those languages at least 5 minutes a week. 2 (Chinese and Hebrew) are at the learning stage. It means I learn vocabulary and do 10 lessons of Chinese or Hebrew a week. So I switch Chinese and Hebrew weeks. After reaching B2 in those two, I will classify them into the maintaining group. After that, I will have German and Dutch reactivation weeks. I plan to spend 6 months in China and perhaps in Israel. I guess I will take Arabic, Swahili, Japanese and Kazakh in the future. Those 4 will be my last languages:)

Thank you Zoe and Ruba for this great video. I am 55 years old and four months ago started studying Russian and that is first time I started learning a new language on the internet by watching KZfaq videos from Russian teachers, Anki, and at the beginning using Duolingo. I speak English and French in addition to my native Turkish which I had learned in school some 40 years ago, and then practiced English throughout my life. If I succeed in reaching Russian intermediate level hopefully in a two year period, then I am thinking on learning Chinese. I had started learning Chinese in 2013 when I had gotten books from Chinese exhibition in the Istanbul Book Fair, but gave up after a while as the signs seemed too difficult at the time, though today internet offers much better language learning methods and tools as I also see and use in Russian. Back then I had only print books, now the opportunities are much greater as you explained in the video. By the way I have an autographed copy of Tie Ning's book, I bought at that fair, Sonsuz Ne Kadar Uzun, was a great book! I like Chinese cuisine and culture.

I have learned Chinese since 2017, while doing self-study for Japanese ... in my opinion Japanese is more difficult than Chinese. to start with, Japanese looks easier, but the more you learn Japanese, the more you realize that Japanese is more difficult. I like to learn foreign languages... I understand 7 foreign languages : English, French, German, Arabic, Russian, Chinese, and Japanese, but only English and German, I'm ready to speak anytime... the others, I don't speak them very well ...

@@zooropa414 the difficulties of Japanese : 1. the Kanji. there are Onyomi and Kunyomi. most of Chinese hanzi are read in one way. only 20 - 30 characters have more than 1 way of pronunciation, such as 地, 的, 行, 得, etc. in Chinese, 人 is always pronounced "ren", and 生 is always pronounced 'sheng'. you can imagine the possibilities of Japanese pronunciations for those letters.. 2. polite and plain forms, depend on who you talk with. 3. 'abekobe', means on the other hand around. subjects don't always come first. normally, European languages, as well as Chinese, main clauses take place first, followed by subordinate clauses.. I came here to drink coffee.. 我来这里以喝咖啡. in Japanese should change into : coffee drink to, I here came... 'kohi o nonda tame ni, watashi wa koko ni kimashita'. 4. the conjugations depend not only on tenses like Europeannlanguages, bit also on purpose. for example 'bakari'. bakari means 'just do something not long ago', or 'merely do something'.. V-ta bakari desu vis-a-vis V-te bakari imasu. .. tabeta bakari desu : just eaten right now.. tabete bakari imasu : eat all the time , do nothing but eating... there are some complicated conjugations like this... when you start to learn Japanese, it looks easier at the beginning, because they adopt international vocabularies : aeroportu, terebi, toiru, resutoran, supotu, etc.. of which Chinese create their own vocabularies. but once you understand the fundamentals of Chinese, it's getting easier, while Japan, the nore you learn, the more it's getting more difficult; one of the reasons is the distinction between polite and plain forms which are more suitable to native feelings ...

Some additions for me would be: clubhouse: you can either listen to it in the background or actively participate in the conversation. Language buddy: you probably mentioned it in the video, but I want to stress that in many places there will be Chinese natives that are open to language exchanges. I went online and searched for language exchange in the Netherlands and was able to start a weekly practice session with a Taiwanese native which really took me to the next level. Another plus side you might make some new friends

Good tips. The more I look at the evidence, the less sure I am that there is a one size fits all approach to learning a language. I started learning Chinese 3 years ago and have self-studied it in the U.K. mostly, apart from visiting China for 3 weeks back in the summer of 2019. I am now at a relatively high level, I am watching a TV series that has been popular recently in China called 开端 (English name: Reset) and can understand at least 95% with only Chinese subtitles. I've done this virtually just by studying textbooks, checking new words on the pleco dictionary app when I encounter them (I have never memorised vocabulary before, normally just checking them once is enough), and chatting with Chinese people, while of course watching Chinese TV series from time to time. The thing that stumps me is that I've tried these methods with other languages (supposedly much easier languages for English people to learn, like French and Spanish), but it feels like it takes forever to make any progress. To this day I still can't figure out why - with Chinese it was always so easy, but with other languages it just feels like it takes forever to build a foundation and the languages feel much less logical than Chinese does to me. Has anyone had any similar experiences?

Back when I was watching this video, I couldn't understand much of native Chinese contents, and now, it's just mind blowing how much I can understand (for someone with my level). I didn't expect that as I'm only on my 5th month of learning Mandarin. And this is all thanks to this man and his daily lives (all in Chinese, with some explanations in English here and there, which makes it the lightest and the most efficient way to acquire a language.) ...Once again, thank you very much. This shows me one again that watching "tips videos" is not always a waste of time and can be very rewarding... ...(as long as you choose the right channel and you avoid jumping for vidéos to vidéos instead of actually learning your target language(s)).

Could you make a video about your Anki decks and how you use it? I've downloaded it, but I've had some difficulty getting into it. Sometimes reviewing takes me several hours, which I do not have available everyday. It would be great to see your methods and understand how to make the most out of the app.

Great video. I discovered Zoe because I am trying to learn Arabic in Syrian dialect. I started to learn Arabic by write all the words which I was learning in Fusa and Egyptian Arabic. When I can't understand how to pronounce the word when hearing it from a Arab, I ask them to write the word for me, by seeing the letters I immediately understand how to pronounce it. Zoe : which one is better to learn Chinese, Mandarin or Cantonese? Ruba : what was your motivation to start learning Chinese?

Hi Ingrid, thanks for sharing! Mandarin is definitely more useful and much more widespread. I also speak Cantonese but I only use it in Canton and Hong Kong. I mostly speak Mandarin with my Chinese friends from different regions. ☺️

She had a lot of awesome input!!! Very very true on the perspective of asking a native speaker how to speak the language- when in reality it may not be the most useful! Lol It’s like someone asking me how to speak Spanish- I wouldn’t know lol I just grew up with both parents who spoke nothing but Spanish.

This is wonderful... I'm self-teaching and I started with numbers and greetings...and of course tones. What is the best way to learn tones quickly? I feel like I have a bad ear for tones because I don't hear them much at all...but I don't want to sound like a fool overexaggerating the tones. I know that you said to not focus on pinyin, but I know that in pinyin the letters don't always have the same sounds as they do in English...should I first memorize all those differences, or just focus on the character sounds instead. Thanks again for your videos...I think they're going to be a great help to me.
@zoe.languages
@zoe.languages 2 жыл бұрын
I know it sounds a bit stupid to pronounce all the tones correctly at first, but if it helps you improve your pronunciation, just do it. Try to associate the pinyin with the hanzi, at the beginning it is difficult but it will be very beneficial after

How can I let my videos reach those who are interested in learning Chinese? Murmur abracadabra? I’ve made many videos for an illustrated account of Chinese characters in a funny way. About 3000 Chinese characters cover 99% characters in newspapers and books. From my previous videos you can learn about 400 common characters. There are about 120 commonly used Chinese character radicals. From my previous videos, you can learn about 80 basic radicals. I’ve spent about 100,000 hours studying English humor and Western culture, and many years studying Chinese culture and jokes. My native language is Chinese.

I am turkish i speak fluent japanese now studying mandarin, with a lil bit cantonese, what she said about " asking a native speaker" that is the last person u should ask, is 100% correct they learned the language naturally without resources and us learners tried our best with resources etc whch is why we can give a better insight when it comes to language learning , Its ALL thanks to ANKI , it has literally made language learning soooooo much easier, no offense to ur sponsor, but all other apps arent as good as anki

I'm Indonesian. I have learned Chinese since 2017, while doing self-study for Japanese. I got Hsk-3 in 2019, and now I think my Chinese skill is more or less Hsk-4. I haven't done Japanese test, JLPT or so, but I think my Japanese equals N5, because during these 4 - 5 years I've been focusing on Chinese. I like to learn foreign languages ...

did you have a video about the difference of languages that use ideogram and languages that write words with alphabet? I tried to learn japanese but I found it a bit difficult cause i need to learn the ideogram and how pronounce it, but russian looks more easy to me cause i learned the alphabet and know i can read every word (even not knowing what it means). I'm a portuguese native speaker, what is another alphabetical language, what are your thoughts as a chinese native speaker? (btw i just recently started learning russian, i just know english and my native language).

I feel like the most important part is actually doing it in a way which fun for you, that makes you study a lot more and makes you focus more. Im learning by myself Chinese for around a month now and personally, im using everything. Duolingo, memrise, flashcards, textbook, watching Chinese streams on twitch and youtube. Just whatever i want to do at the moment. The only thing im using constantly is duolingo everyday even if i have no energy or time to study just to do anything every single day and flashcards i actually do every second day at least. Duolingo is minimum of 5 minutes but whenever i feel like it i can spend an hour having fun with it. With flashcards i can do 30 one day and the other day i can do 5. For me consistency and having fun with it are most important.

oh important note with Chinese. When doing flashcards i write every single word i dont know in my notebook in Pinyin Hanzi and English and whenever i make a mistake or i forget i will write english and pinyin next to each other and hanzi below it like 10 times. So thats why actually i will sometimes do only 5 flashcards. 5 flashcards sounds like few seconds but sometimes it will take 20 minutes honestly
