I’m 27. Jumped on piano a year and a half ago and have never looked back or regretted it. I play every morning and every night before bed. In one year I was able to learn Chopins Waltz in A minor and Pasacagalia-Handel. Pianote helped me through a lot of it and I find myself learning new songs much faster and easier than when I first started.

Wow! I'm finally advantaged after 70 years. I wonder if I should have waited until I'm 80 and really impressed my friends.? Then again I'm having so much fun now I can hardly bear the excitement ( between naps)! I tell ya though I do have a vision,.... my first national tour when I'm 80! I can see it now. A big bus and driver; an ensuite with room for my walker; and of course my support team; physiotherapist and nurse and audiologist; and of course the nutritionist to help with the latest nootropics. Biggest hurdle (as someone who started to play when I was 23) is to motivate yourself to learn the coordination and muscle memory required. And only thing to ensure you'll get that is to PLAY EVERY SINGLE DAY! And to do that, you want to make it as easy and effortless as possible to play. You want to have a digital keyboard that has it's own speakers and sounds, that's powered 24/7 so that every time you hit a key, even if you're just walking past it randomly, it'll make a sound... or to have a "silent piano" (if you can afford a real one) that even if at 11PM you get the urge to play, you don't need to worry about bothering others. etc. You'll lose your will to play if you need to start setting something up, powering up the keyboard, starting up an app on your computer etc... you want all those hurdles out of your way of just playing. Situate the piano in such a place that you're arms distance to it most of the time or that you pass it by multiple times a day while doing stuff around the house... and you'll be just thinking "I'll play a bit before I continue what I was doing..." and it'll create those chances of just randomly getting lost into it and that 2 minutes turns into 2 hours... and you'll love it! And learn to enjoy just the fact that you press buttons and they make interesting sounds. Don't worry about being really great or "learning all these songs"... just enjoy every moment you sit there making some sounds and you'll be spending a lot of time in front of it without you even noticing. And when you spend a lot of time on something, you'll become good at it... you can't avoid it. Never get frustrated, or you won't play. It needs to be fun every time, so don't put goals and achievements of demands on your progress... that way you'll never get frustrated and you'll always be learning and enjoying. And remember to sleep a lot... if you can't do something today, sleep on it before getting frustrated and try again next day... and day after that. And you'll learn, without ever even noticing. This has worked for me wonderfully and I'm somewhat accomplished composer/arranger as of today regardless the fact that I've never taken lessons. I just want to enjoy my time in front of the keyboard... and if I do that, everything else will fall into it's place :) Good luck everyone!

@@charlottekatakuri1414 I wouldn’t consider myself the best, but I can definitely play more than I expected I would be able to 5 years ago. I was able to play a simple tune with both hands like at the third or fourth week of playing, which is pretty late but you get my point. Now I can play my favorite pieces and it definitely worth the grind and the hours or practice put into it. So, I would say if you stick with it and keep practicing, you will get where you want to be in a matter of time. If you do it correctly, it won’t take long until ur able to play ur favorite songs. I’ve learnt that this channel helps a lot with that. Everyone is different. Hope this helped. Good luck!

I was pretty much using other KZfaq videos in an attempt to learn how to play. I was going to take lessons but just lost my job of 17 years. I found your video 7 days to learning piano. I'm on day six now and I was in tears. I can see the progress and can see the beautiful music I can play. I enjoy your videos. I started piano at age 61 and at 65 I still practice every day, also play bass guitar and did play trumpet through high school. While I was still working I would practice every night before bed, because I never knew what time I would be getting off work. Trying to get a group together now, I have been taking my bass over to a piano players house and working with him. Have a guitar player that we are going to try and get together with next week. Love playing music, was in a group in the mid 70's as a bass player. Still using your octive lesson to keep my small hands stretched.

Talk about a book older than the student...my mother used to teach using the John Thomas books (circa 1936). She started to teach me when I was seven but my parents divorced and that was the end of the lessons. Just over 20 years ago I came across a Casio at Costco I couldn't refuse, thinking I was going to learn to play it. Since then I've occasionally plinked on it but still can't play ANYTHING. I am currently 68 and have decided to make a real effort before I run out of time. I paused this video and ordered a sustain peddle. I think I'm committed. Thanks for the encouragement. I'll see if this old dog can learn a new trick.

I am 61. I played trumpet in middle and high school and, except for playing Chopsticks on the piano in the band room, that was the sum total of my keyboard experience. I stopped making music after graduating. Last month I bought a keyboard because, dang it, I just wanted to make music again; preferably using an instrument better suited to solo performance than my old trumpet. I've been using a variety of resources--books, KZfaq videos, and the like--and have been having a blast! I wish I had kept making music throughout my life instead of taking a 43-year hiatus, but that's water under the bridge. Now I'm focused on revisiting one of the joys of my early days, and embracing a more musical future. Thanks for making these videos available--they're a godsend!

When I started reading these comments, I had no idea there'd be so many from people my age. Wow. Music, of course, is ageless, but it's cool to know there are others out there like me. I had to choose between music & horses. Horses won, but that was then. Gave my life to horses for decades; time to move on. Learning to read music at this age has been the adventure of a lifetime. And as you say, these videos are a Godsend. Good luck to everyone. PS: It would be so cool if all Pianote students had a message board or Facebook group or something to share stories, goals, frustrations, etc., wouldn't it? Let's see, we could form a facebook group, figure out a way to do Skype piano band rehearsals, end up writing a song, & somebody would write a book about us & we'd perform virtually for St. Jude's Hospital or troops overseas or Farm Aid, & they'd make our story into a move. That would be cool. I want Annette Benning to play me.

I'm 57 and started learning to play the piano last year. Online learning has been super helpful in my journey and I absolutely love Lisa's videos. If I could make one more suggestion - start a journal that includes your daily practice plans, challenges, victories, etc. You will go through peaks and valleys of frustration and motivation. Learning the piano (especially if you are learning to read music) is very difficult. It will take years to master this instrument. Having a journal will be a concrete reminder of your progress and it helps to keep one disciplined with practice. Remember - learning is an infinite game. It's incredibly fun and rewarding to hear music created by your own hands.

My main problem is family responsibilities with elderly parents that live out of town. Of course we want to spend at least an hour a day practicing but had other things to take care of. When I'm on the keyboard, I feel that I have to push myself to finish the pieces I started learning. There would be a few months in between I would be away from home with no access to a piano.

It makes my heart to feel light & always dreamt of learning how to play it.I have a daughter who knows little about piano and she influenced me more to learn.. so now i am 49 and i just learned to played about 2 yrs ago.I may say that i can play better now than before.During my first stage of learning i could hardly coordinate my fingers on both hands ,i played songs by ear.Knowing the tune of the songs makes me play the rhythm with my right hand only & didn't know what to play on the left hand then, i memorized the chords.( studied notes & how chords are formed ) then i start playing the songs that i loved with the lyrics and chords in front of me..practice makes perfect!.. as they say( of course it's not perfect on my case coz i aged..my hands aged..feeling numbs sometimes..but i am proud of myself .Never thought that i could learn to play at this age of 49 & still learning more through watching all your videos!..thanks to you!

i started serious piano lessons a week ago i mean this may 2022 and currently i am just at 28. i was inspired in 2009 when i joined high school in form 3 and there was this guy Joshua who is really talented, i tried learning then but we were very many and all i tried was placing chord C,G and F in that simultenous manner you know but later we ran out of time for practice until may 2022 when i had to buy my own piano to fulfil my passion after a serious relationship heart break. :-) i am inspired with your lessons day by day i am getting more skilled, thanks dear.

Haven't played the piano in 30 years, I'm 36 now and yes I was 6 years when I last played. I must mention that when you learn at a younger age the brain is still 'pruning' out the neural connections that it doesn't 'need'. I purchased a piano this year due to covid because I have more free time at my disposal and came across this KZfaq channel and it got me excited as that 6 year old. It all came back to me with a little bit of effort and I have to thank this lady for it, you've ignited a spark I thought I lost but didn't, thank you so so much.

Having worked with people suffering from Alzheimer's, when my husband retired he feared he might go the same way. I had heard that there were two good ways to prevent this - either learn a foreign language or learn a musical instrument. Since we have too many dogs to go abroad, I bought him ten piano lessons as a taster the Christmas before he retired. He loved it, and still does three years later. The teacher asked me if I would like to try, so I did... and I fell in love with the piano immediately. We're not bothered about getting our grades but it's nice to have a few party pieces. So there you have it; I took up the piano at 56, my husband took it up at 64 and we both remain in control of our faculties. And two pianos. And a digital piano. And loads of manuscripts. We're having lots of fun!

You are never too old. I started in February 2023 just after my 71st birthday and it's one of the best things I have done for myself since I retired. It helps my mental alertness, calms the arthritis in my hands and enriches my soul. All while making mistakes with every attempt at learning a tune. I personally found personal lessons work best for but we are not the same. Find a system that works for you and go for it.

Hello Lisa! I have discovered that there has been a piano man living in me for 67 years! Now I find it helpful if I take responsibility to teach him what’s going on and that he understands and then I make him practice! And make him prove to me that he’s learning by extra practice! When he says “I’ve had enough!”, I know I’ve done my job!

Hello Lisa. I'm 61 and got an electric keyboard a few years ago. I've never played the piano but a couple of weeks ago blew the dust off of it and watched some of yours videos on scales and have been practicing some of those. Some of your exercises have helped my hands to "think" independently. They really work. I think many people try and when their hands feel awkward believe that they must be different than their piano playing friends. I remember though as a boy learning how to ski. It felt like my dad strapped on 6 foot long clown shoes onto my feet. It was horrible. I fell and thought then that I must just not have what it takes to be a skier. I stuck with it though and bit by bit the skis felt less and less awkward. It wasn't long before I felt like the skis were a natural part of my body. I would fly down the mountain, go off jumps and really had a lot of fun. I think this must be the same. With your exercises I have already seen progress on this and it feels amazing, so other beginners - don't give up. It's too bad so many students have been forced to take music lessons for months (or years) before ever learning something that is fun for them. I get why so many kids hated their lessons and quit as soon as they were allowed to. Had they learned some song they thought was cool for their generation, they probably would have really loved it. So far I haven't been able to play anything that has sounded good enough to where I enjoyed hearing it. I've got some of the basic chords down and have figured out some melody lines to a few songs I like but nothing that when I put together made me feel like "hey I did it!" But with the song you taught at the end of this lesson, I was jamming and having a blast. It's very easy to learn and sounds good. My teenage son had to come in and ask me to quiet it down so he could wind down. I was playing it slow, then fast then loud, then soft, then with this variation and that one. It was really fun and I think didn't sound too bad. So Thank You! I had a lot of fun with this lesson and can't wait for the next one after this.

What an amazing piano teacher you are! Really like the way you explain things simply and in detail with excitement and body language in a poetic way a long with a story (the cherry on top) right down to the emotions and barriers you will run into and how to get pass them when you run into to them along with simple tricks and tips. I know I keep saying these things BUT ITS NOT MY FAULT..Its your fault for continuously being an amazing piano teacher. Anyway, its nice to wake up to good video and piano lesson to start the day. I started learning to play piano as a college elective back in 1979. I was 19 at the time. However, I did not stick with it due to the lack of pianos around. I would go to my aunt and uncle’s house to practice on their upright piano, but the piano was so much out of tune. So I gave up. I would still toy with few melodies on a piano at a shopping mall like Jingle Bells. Now at 62, I decided to learn piano again and got myself a Carry On folding piano several weeks ago. I take the piano to work to practice during lunch. I’m learning Canon in D because I am familiar with the chord progression when I played the ukulele. When I a need break from Canon, then I play chords like Beatles Let It Be and John Legend’s All of Me. Thank you so much.
