How To Level John Deere X700 Series 54HC Mower Deck

My method of leveling the deck on a John Deere X700 Series Tractor. I use the fancy gauge, not the one provided with the tractor. The one provided works great, I just don't show how to use it. I'd recommend the fancy gauge just because it is more exact, and can be used on any machine.

Awesome Job Josh, My brother works for a john deere dealership and we both watched this video and he said thats how him and other techs adjust the decks as well, keep on tractoring!!!

Hi Josh. I've got a question for ya.. Do you know if a 2005 x720 owners manual will be the same as say a 2012 owners manual.? My 2012 x720 didn't come with a manual and I found one on ebay. It's got a copyright of 2005..Did they change them much over the years?

Hmmm… that’s a good one. Some machines have very little change and only a few revisions, others have one every year. Serial numbers went 2006: 010001, 2007: 020001, etc until 2012: 070001. The manuals on Deere’s website were 010001-030000, and then one per year after. So I’d say no, cannot use an earlier one on a later model. That being said, I cannot say that as I don’t have the manuals in front of me, and realistically most things won’t change. I would just use the one off their website for your serial number, or buy it from there.

Hey Josh, great video. I have an X734, and the deck is extremely unbalanced/not level (I bought it used). On the left side it is only a half inch off the floor, but I can’t raise the deck using the tool - the bolt can’t be turned any further. On the right side it is the opposite, where I can’t lower it any further or the bolt will run out of thread. Do I need to remove the deck to fix this? I am literally stuck and not sure how to get the deck level.

Yes I would remove the deck and investigate. First thing I’d check would be to make sure it has the proper length bolt (same on each side), as well as the proper yokes on the end. I would then make sure to check that the yokes are in the same hole on the draft arm on each side, as there are 2 holes. The problem with the 700 series is the quick attach rear draft arms. The sides are connected by that bar, so you don’t get as much movement as you would with an X500. That being said, I wouldn’t think you could easily adjust one end all the way up and one all the way down, so this doesn’t really make sense… I could be wrong, but this deck is way more rough under the X758 compared to the 54” I had on my X580. So if I getting this tool right if deck on 3 then the tool should read 3 all around the bottom of deck comeing up on level spot

No. Supposedly the depth control isn’t perfect 1/4” measurements. If you zero it at 2.5 as it says, 3 may not be exactly 3”. Also the fancy gauge is meant for ground to blade edge, not mower deck edge. This is because the blade is higher up than the low edge of the deck. If you want to cut normally at 3”, set the dial to 3, and adjust so the gauge reads 3” when touching the blade cutting edge.

Hey, Have you thought about getting a cab for your X758? I just ordered my 54" snow blower, and already dreading the winter.

Nope, in my opinion, all the cabs for garden tractors look dumb as hell… for me, arguably even 4 series subcompacts look goofy… but I also understand it isn’t all about looks, it is utility and comfort. For me I don’t spend too much time plowing my drive, I have a video showing me plow the the whole thing, but never got a chance to upload, so will this winter, but it wouldn’t be worth it for me. Heavy gloves, jacket, and hat do just fine. I’ve rode my ATVs in -26, so this slow speed stuff never really bothered me.

How did you lower the deck without the engine on, mine doesn't do that from what I remember

Just move the upper lever forward, should go down with the deck weight.

Way too complicated and not as accurate as using the stock Level Gauge that comes with the machine, given floors are not perfectly flat (does not have to be level...just flat left to right) and neither is any lawn. Do you really think your blades are not consistent with the deck? They will be unless you hit major obstacles (like tree stumps, big rocks, walls, etc). So using the stock provided Level Gauge to level the deck is far superior. If you really want to check the blade tips, you can, but only after using the stock level gauge. Been doing this for over 15 years. I have both the stock Level Gauges tractors (500 and 700 series) and have the JD yellow pivot tool, and the yellow pivot tool stays on the shelf. Apply the KISS principle.

I know, I’d love to have one! But they don’t fit on the new 700s. Company called CTC makes loaders, hopefully can get one once I get back to the lower 48

Keep in mind your garage has a slight grade. You won’t be even when measuring both sides.

Yeah I know, off camera I turned the tractor around and remeasured, made slight adjustments to cut the difference and get it close. Cuts fine with no obvious edges so I’ll call it good! Haha!
