My JD LA130 21 hp 48 inch cut mower had to go to The dealership for for a clutch wire issue. Had the drive belt and the steering gear replaced. The mower cut great before the repairs. But scalped a little on return. Checked tire pressure first. Then put a 2 inch template under deck at the 2.5 inch setting. Then put the setting at 4 and reset deck to 3.5 inches. Now, The deck is cutting really nice. I reset the scalping wheels not to run on the ground while mowing on the 2nd lowest hole. Now just get to summer mowing. Shawn.

@@JohnsonsSmallEngines you’ve got a talent for simple explanations. On my LA145 I’ve done oil/filters/lube, starter relay, new deck and trans belts, new spindles pulleys and sheaves, new wheels, upgrades to bearings from bushings, steering gear and sector plate… heck, the only thing I haven’t done is the tranny fluid change. I have a background as a mech, but the JD was foreign to me. Again, thanks for making it look simple and easy.

Yes, more important to measure blade tip height than to measure deck height. A ratchet wrench is most helpful to make the adjustments. Good video, keep up the good work.

Good explanation on how to level mower deck. The older mowers 2005 do not have that real nice adjustable nut, they have a bolt and a slot to raise the rear of the mower deck, real PIA. That leveling tool should come with every mower when you purchase it. Think about it you spend $2000-$4000 dollars for new machine and then have to buy a $8 dollar leveling tool to make it cut correctly.... Now I have to find a level spot on my driveway which will be harder than the actual adjustment...LOL Thanks for posting.

Hi so when placing gauge it’s on the bottom of the blade not on the cutting edge but as long as its roughly in the same spots on both sides and front and rear is acceptable? Thank you! When i do get a chance i can not wait to adjust my tractors! THANK YOU SO MUCH! Have a good day

I have a JD S 130, having a heck of a time trying to level it out at 2 1/4 per the manual, the adjustment rod is almost bottomed out, anymore turns and the nut may come off. How far up should it be off the deck if I have it in the 4inch transport setting? I'm using three 2 inch blocks to do it.......

Hey mate just wanting to see if you're able to do a video on how to adjust the foot brake, I tried to stop the other day and it rolled into a ditch haha also too the bolts that you tighten or loosen to adjust the side of the deck, I've got older version that doesn't have them, do you know where I could purchase them or an easier way to level or keep it half decent. Seems to hit a bump and loosen quickly which step cuts then lol. Cheers mate

I love your videos! I need your help I installed all new spindles and pulleys the deck is much quieter but I still have a problem , when I raise the deck up half way it makes a noise as if something is hitting if I lower it all the way down the noise goes away. I tried leveling the deck but still no luck. I also found if I push down the left side of the deck the noise goes away. The blades are not hitting anything. can You help?

Thanks, very clear explanation. I'm going to give it a go at the weekend, we can only use the top 3 notches which makes it useless for long grass. Ours is a X130R, I wonder if that is a different letter prefix for Europe and the same as above.

If your deck is too low, even on the highest setting, then you should try to evenly adjust all adjustments higher to raise deck. You should have 3 adjusters. You should have one in front. One on the left side and one on the right side evenly adjust all three up. Turn the adjustment nut clockwise. you may be able to get a higher cut this way. It is very hard to explain but basically you just have to raise all of your adjustments up (higher the mower deck). Then level the deck. I hope this wasn’t too confusing. I will try to make a video on this subject at some point in the future.

@@JohnsonsSmallEngines Good morning from the UK, many thanks Brad, it worked just as you explained in the video above. I raised it right up and levelled it on a concrete garage floor which is faily level. Now it can cut much higher for the long grass, and our lawn cut height is a notch above 2. Ours has the plastic covers on the deck, which seems to do not much other than trap grass on top of the deck.

Why is there two holes on the deck where the front adjuster connects? I was cranking on that front adjuster and the front of the deck was not moving upwards or raising. I'm confused......

That would be a good question for John Deere. my opinion is there may have been an attachment or that bracket is used on many other mower decks which may use a different hole. I would suggest always putting the rod back in the hole that has the wear marks around it. As long as somebody hasn’t messed with it before you did. It should be good to go back in the same hole it came out of.

When measuring the deck height, where do you place the measuring tool? On the cutting edge of the blade?

LOL I took that POS plastic grass shoot off and welded that stupid metal one completely closed! I can't understand why they put them on, they are a hindrance and take up way too much space you can not get close to anything at all. now I have a 42" cutting deck! I use a tape measurer and that is all. I even set my LA110 at the "2" mark and wa-la all done I have a question for you. I have a John Deere LA110 mower I fully restored the entire deck, I installed and greased 2 new spindles, I replaced there pulleys, I installed all new blade breaks, installed new idler pulleys, Even brand new mower blades and new belt. I welded the broken hanger supports and installed new hanger brackets and arm for the front and rear of the deck. and made sure the blades are perfectly in line with each other I have about 1/16th of an inch on all 4 corners of the cutting blades and perfectly level i mean WOW!!! even after all this I still get a strange sound and vibration from the mower deck. I did all this because it kept tossing the belt till it broke the front belt guide and twisted it into a pretzel blasting it off into the yard. I even painted the deck too! The sound is like a stuttered rumble and the vibration is like side to side (if that makes seance) The only other thing I can think of is a bent crank shaft. Love your videos btw.

I have seen bent front engine pulleys, a bad spot on the deck belt, blades not balanced correctly and bent pulleys on the mower deck. Unless you hit the crankshaft, it should not be bent. If it is bent, I would think you would be leaking oil from bottom crank seal. I just serviced a 2023 John Deere S100 and the mower deck shake is always there more than I would like, but I cannot find anything on a brand new machine that would make it shake. The quality and thickness of the steel has lesson through the years so the shake on some machines will always be there More than ever because of the lack of quality and thickness of the steel on the mower deck. That’s all my opinion, but that’s where I’m at. Thank you for watching my videos!

@@JohnsonsSmallEngines Thank you for the reply and keep up the sweet videos I think you are very informative and helpful. As for the sound it maybe the new spindles I thought I had greased them both till the grease came out but not so, as the left spindle was not done right (or so it would seem) I put in a tube and thought that was good enough , well it wasn't and I just added more till I seen it come out. Now during this I was hearing the snaps and pops of air bubbles coming from the spindle I see the grease now and that sound is now gone. Yeah the machine is a "bought used " mower and I do know the guy that owned he used it and got a new one sold this one to me. Not a leak on it anything on it. the deck and belt were bad and so was the front steering I replaced all the parts ball joints and arms everything but the tires is new completely ( I am doing a wheel bearing kit upgrade right now taking out the stock crap and putting in the good ball bearings! done by me from watching your videos mostly and a few others. oh also I redone the tuff torq K46 hydrostatic drive and all the parts , pulleys and belt, I got a brand new mower now. I will see if this is true the vibration thing my neighbor just bought a brand new John Deere mower with 24HP motor . But I trust you are right about it that deck is some thin thin metal. really cheep aZZ material if you ask me .
