Everyone thinks they know how to start a charcoal grill, but most don't do it properly. We've all seen it-someone will stand over the grill repeatedly dousing the charcoals and flame with lighter fluid, hoping the flame will gets bigger and bigger to no avail. Our resident grill expert J. Pereira is here to show us that actually, you don't even need any lighter fluid at all. Watch and learn from a backyard BBQ master.

No, it makes you stupid if: 1.) You first read "mayonnaise and Kim Chee casserole" and believed it was an actual dish. 2.) This is the same way I used to light the wood stove when I lived in Monticello, NY. I didn't know diddly about wood stoves until we had one installed. Not sure how I learned, either. But I'm getting a hibachi style grill and do not want to use lighter fluid. I just wasn't sure if the heat from paper and twigs was enough to heat the charcoal. This was helpful. We all have to learn somehow, although people act like they know everything through osmosis. "You don't know how to light charcoal? You been living under a rock?" I had a hibachi before, and used lighter fluid, but it stinks and I am not crazy about flammables anyway. Good, basic, simple video. Thank you.

Just use lighter fluid...let it soak into the charcoal for 3 minutes at least. When you light it, it will light very very slowly. It doesnt blow up in your face. Use a match if you're worried. Wait 20+ minutes pr until the charcoal is completely white and then spread the coals, wait a couple minutes, then you're ready to cook. One big thing that most people dont do is pre-light any charcoal that you might add later on. (Say if you're slow cooking or smoking) You absolutely must use a chimney starter to get the charcoal white before you add it to your grill! Adding black charcoal to the grill while you're cooking releases hundreds of carcinogens into your food!

Yeah this video... id kind of whack lol. Same time i didnt rewlize peoppe have trou le getting charcoal going lol. At least 90% of the bags in the store are all instant charcoal and light super duper ez. Like its pre dosed light fluid or something lol. As for how i do it. I soend 3 bucks and get lighter fluid. I get instant chsrcoal or easy light charcoal. And i get it lit by putting some lighter fluid on a piece, light it get a dmall fire goal. Then i spray more light fluid on once i hsve a flame going. This getd rhe entire thing to ignite really eqsy and i end up using hardly any fluid. Just a single 32 oz bottle depending on how much i camp/eat on the charcoal grill over the summer itll last me about the whole summer if not the entire!

Just use a charcoal chimney. The downside to lighting paper in the grill is the ashes stay in there.

Tiny McPoop you don't have to use the chimney on top of the grill. I typically just light on a patch of dirt or something.

@Tiny McPoop You don't need to use paper to get the charcoal started when using the Chimney. Weber makes these small lighting cubes, use one and done. No paper ash.

@@tomwhitmore1325 actually use a small paper napkin or bit of paper towel crumpled up and put some cooking oil on it, hardly any ash and burns very hot, I've done it in -25 degree Celsius weather no problem.

This worked - clearly & efficiently explained and demonstratred. Thank you, Sir. I used shredded cardboard. However, lighter fluid is still useful to get the 'coals' quickly and evenly.

How Argentinians lights a grill the right way: throw bunch of papers, throw the coal. BURN. Wait few seconds, bring a hairdryer, turn on and apply in some parts of the mountain of coal, then you will have all the coal ready in 1 min. Yeah, ready to bake 30kg of meat :D

Thankfully I only wasted about two years where I was grilling over flaming, black coals. As a kid I thought you WANTED the open flame poking through the grill like all the B side shots in grilling shows. I had absolutely no idea they were supposed to be ashed over. I thought the white meant dinner was over 🤣 Live and learn.
