This reminds me of growing up in Jamaica in the late 60s and 70s. Our house had one of this stove, a kerosene oil refrigerator/freezer, deep freezer, blow torch, and a Tilley hurricane lamp. Power outages did not adversely affected us.

Great to see these burners, my Dad used to brew up at the side of the road on one of these on our holidays in the early 60's. I used my Grandfather's Sirram Wasp yesterday to try it out, maybe you have seen these, I think the key feature is that it's a kettle and teapot all in one so maybe of less interest in the US market.

@BernieDawgCinema
@BernieDawgCinema 3 жыл бұрын
@Mark Sure. You can spend many hours with non-ammonia brass/metal polishes and a toothbrush to get the burner shiny. Problem is, once you light it again all the work you did will disappear completely as the brass/bronze alloy of the burner turns grey from oxidation in just a few minutes of use. No point to polishing burners unless it's just going to sit on a shelf and not be used again. Hope that helps. 👍 BD

@BernieDawgCinema
@BernieDawgCinema 4 жыл бұрын
@@Rammoy1 Again, *as I said to you before*, it is difficult to diagnose problems in KZfaq comments. You are welcome to send me email and photos of your stove issues to the email address you'll find in the description section below the video. But, a "thin streak of smoke" generally indicates a fuel vapor leak from a crack or hole in the burner. Waving a flame source like a lighter near the vapor stream will often cause it to to catch on fire and make a small candle flame where the hole or crack is located, and from which the burner is emitting the fuel vapor. Holes/cracks in burners negatively affect the flame quality of the burner and may cause yellow flames or underburn. Burner cracks or holes need to be repaired with "silver brazing" at a very high temperature (700-800 Deg C). Such repairs require well-practiced stove repair skills. I do such repairs frequently for my clients and at little cost. I demonstrate silver brazing repair of a Optimus 111C burner right here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hr97YJN83Lemqpc.html BD

@BernieDawgCinema
@BernieDawgCinema 2 ай бұрын
You take a look at the burner you have on your stove and compare yours to the burners on the stoves in this video. Silent burners look completely different than roarer burners. The Svea 5 should have come fitted with a silent burner from the factory, but only you can tell if it has the original burner or if it was refitted with a roarer at a later time. OR… send me a photo of your burner and I can tell you what you have. Bd@berniedawg.com .

Thanks for the video, can I ask how much fuel is needed to fill tanks from empty? Your vids have been so helpful
@BernieDawgCinema
@BernieDawgCinema 2 жыл бұрын
@roy allan That’s a more complicated question than you may have guessed. The two stoves in this video each have a tank capable of holding 2 pints (0.94 liters) of fuel. But, because you need air space in order to pressurize the fuel, the original manufacturer (Primus) directs to fill each of these stoves only 2/3 full (1.3 pints or 0.63 liters). That’s for the two stoves you see in the video. But… these sorts of stoves came in many, many sizes and models with tanks ranging in size from as little as 1/2 pint (0.23 liters) to as large as 8 pints (3.78 liters) or more. Best practice is to fill the tank so that the fuel is a bit below (1 to 1.5 centimeters below) the inside of the fuel filler neck when you peer into the fuel filler. This will give you roughly 2/3 fuel and plenty of air to pressurize the tank no matter which of the sizes of vintage stove you may have. 👍 BD

What pressure does the tank need to be maintained at to produce a sizzlin' hot flame using a silent burner?
@BernieDawgCinema
@BernieDawgCinema 2 жыл бұрын
@nigelpatrice philp That’s a funny question! 😄 There is no pressure gauge on the stove to make such a measurement. Sooo… IF the stove is in good working order and properly maintained (which many are NOT!)… then, I’d estimate about 20 strokes of the pump to get a good solid flow of fuel vapor which will give you a nice big flame with a silent burner 2-pint stove as shown in this video. If you are asking this question, I’d guess you may be having problems with yours. Maybe check out the repair playlist for kerosene stoves at my channel here: kzfaq.info/sun/PL9Tg7BYD6fULVp5VFHNYZkUSIQUA6R8Gk or just drop an email with some photos of what you have there to my email address to get some expert direction. bd@berniedawg.com BD

Hi Ted Your question is not stupid at all. I hear this question all the time. Thousands of people, the majority of people in the world actually, would rather their loud stoves perform like they had silent burners. Some original manufacturers even made products for this purpose. But, these days, if you have a flame plate type roarer burner I have a solution for you. Check www.shapeways.com/shops/berniedawgshop or i.materialise.com/en/shop/designer/gary-adams . These are products I designed and have printed through 3D meal printing outfits that can transform your loud flame plate roarer stove to a silent stove. could you use a gas torch instead of the alcohol to heat up the stove burner
@BernieDawgCinema
@BernieDawgCinema 3 жыл бұрын
@Rex. Georg III Well, Georgie, you *could* do a preheat with a propane torch, but unless you are quite proficient and attentive, I’d caution against it. The traditional tried-and-proven denatured alcohol method endorsed by original manufacturers and used for the last 125+ years by people all over the world delivers a consistent and appropriate heat. A torch in foolish or hurrying hands could easily overheat or even melt the burner or parts of the burner. !!!! 😲 Torches like you want to use were made for that purpose - melting of metals. There is no need to be hasty by using a torch. Slow down and enjoy life. 😎👍 BD

@BernieDawgCinema
@BernieDawgCinema Жыл бұрын
@Diegovswild You have to preheat the burners so the burner will be hot enough to vaporize the kerosene. Kerosene should exit the jet as a gas, not a liquid. Use quality 1-K rated kerosene for the stove fuel. Use denatured alcohol or any good quality ethanol alcohol to preheat. Fill the preheat cup to full. Light the alcohol. Allow to burn out completely, add a few pumps pressure, and light the stove immediately. Don't pump it up crazy high at first. Let it continue to warm up for a bit before adding pressure. Rewatch the video. I show all that in there. Good luck. BD

What does the pressure do to kirosine in the Tank? Will it pump it up to the burner?
@BernieDawgCinema

@Amma Doing Yes. The pressure in the tank forces the kerosene up into the burner head. The pressure also forces the kerosene vapor (a gas created by boiling the kerosene in the burner) out of the jet. That is how these stoves work. BD

@BernieDawgCinema
@BernieDawgCinema 3 жыл бұрын
@Daniel Mercado No!! Only kerosene. Using the vent screw to release pressure while using a non-kerosene fuel can cause a big flesh-burning and hair-removing fireball when the volatile vapor of the non-kerosene fuel ignites. Kerosene is low volatility and doesn't produce vapor at room temperature. BD

Can you burn white gas in one of these old kerosene stoves. I have a Svea No. 15.
@BernieDawgCinema
@BernieDawgCinema 4 жыл бұрын
@Jake Gregg It would be dangerous to do so. The only way to turn off the stove is to open the vent screw. If you had white gas in there, it would vent white gas vapor into the air near the flame and KA-BOOM! Plus, white gas being more volatile than kerosene, will build more pressure in the tank as things warm up. On the Svea 15, there is no safety valve to release pressure from the tank in case of over-pressurizing, so you run the risk of a tank rupture and an even bigger KA-BOOM-O! Hope that helps. What's wrong with using kerosene? (Curious minds want to know.) 🤔🙂 BD

@BernieDawgCinema
@BernieDawgCinema Жыл бұрын
@TANK BATTLE PICTURES "Skyrocketing"? Again, as I've often pointed out... these stoves have not been made for 40 or more years. As they continue to disappear, they get more valuable. Each year that goes by, they go up in price. Not sure it has much to do with "gas shortages", just regular old supply and demand of a no-longer-made product. Completely normal for this to happen. That said... I see that there have been more than a dozen sold over the last two weeks for under $100 USD on eBay. $100 = a dinner out with the family or a single night in a motel. So, no great cost at all. Keep it in perspective, and remember, there is no such thing as a free lunch. 👍😎 BD

@Michael Willconquer The big Swedish companies (Primus, Optimus, Radius, Sievert/Svea) that first produced these sorts of stoves as early as 1890 stopped production of them from 1960 through the 1980s as each company slowly moved on to other things or was absorbed/purchased by other companies. But, that means millions of them were made during that ninety year stretch. While there are still some low-quality versions being produced new by unnamed companies in places like India and Singapore, for your sanity and your safety, I’d suggest avoiding those. Instead, shop eBay for “kerosene stove” or the same search terms paired with any of the company names I mention above. There are lots to find still out there. Rebuilding one of the solid and well-made Swedish stoves will get you a safe and well-performing stove that will outlive you. I have many videos here at my channel that show you how to fix your stove you end up buying. BD

@Anuradha Kumari These stoves come with many different capacity tanks and different sized output power burners. The two stoves shown in this video have tanks that should be filled with 1 and 2/3 pints of kerosene fuel. At “normal” flame (boils one quart of water in 3-4 minutes), the fuel in the tank will last 3 and 3/4 hours (225 minutes). Bigger tanks will hold more fuel and the fuel tank will last longer. Using the stove at lower flames will make the fuel last longer. Larger burners burn the fuel faster. BD

@Abolhassan Nejati EBay! Search on terms "brass kerosene stove" and you'll find hundreds of listings. Or, try other online auction sites, too - like Tradera. Modern-made versions of these stoves that are selling for new are usually of lesser quality and may give lesser performance. BD

Which of these two models is more efficient?
@BernieDawgCinema
@BernieDawgCinema 3 жыл бұрын
@Supervivencia criolla No real difference. The jet holes are the same size so the same amount of fuel is coming out of the jet and mixing with air. Same amount of fuel = same amount of flame = same amount of heat. Fuel efficiency on small stoves like this is really not something to trouble yourself over. If the flames are clear blue like I show, and not yellow, then you have a pretty-close-to-ideal (efficient) fuel mix with air. Blue flame = efficient. Yellow flame = wasted fuel. 👍 BD

@Jobz Director Ummm... do you mean, "Where can I find a stove made in the late 1940's in Sweden, like the ones you show in this video so I can purchase it?" If that is your question, then watch the vintage stove auction/sales on eBay in all available countries, Tradera, FINN, and other online auction sites. Some even show up on Etsy from time to time. Prepare to bid higher than you likely think as these stoves like this are over 70 years old and are highly sought after by collectors. Especially so if they are in good condition and complete like the ones I show in my video. Good luck! BD

@HAPPY FAMILY. JAI SHREE RAAM Diesel for automobiles and trucks is a very poor fuel to try to use in stoves. Stoves are small and have no pressure. Diesel engines are large, run at thousands of degrees of temperature, and have many hundreds of pounds of pressure inside their cylinders. Diesel cannot be used in any stove with any degree of success and the unburned fumes are toxic around food. BD

Hi, I just bought an Indian made brand new kerosene stove and it doesn’t burn as clean, I prick the jet often as it seems to get clogged often and the flame color is only slightly blue. Any advice as to how to get it running smoothly?
@BernieDawgCinema
@BernieDawgCinema 4 жыл бұрын
The new Indian-made stoves are not of the same high quality as the vintage kerosene stoves from Sweden. You could try buying a vintage stove and refurbishing it. You would likely get better results. Secondly... use the right fuel. Lamp oil is not okay. you want high quality K-1 grade kerosene designed for heating and cooking appliances. Here's a link to the right stuff: www.kleanstrip.com/product/1-k-heater-fuel-kerosene More questions? bd@berniedawg.com Good luck! BD

@@BernieDawgCinema is this a swedish invention?
@BernieDawgCinema
@BernieDawgCinema 3 жыл бұрын
@Blackbox BS Yes! Most definitely invented in *Sweden*. I've quoted or paraphrased from an easy 4-second Wikipedia search: The method of heating kerosene fuel in a brass tube device was developed in 1882 for making blowtorches by Carl Richard Nyberg in Sweden. "The first pressurized-burner kerosene (paraffin) stove, was developed in 1892 by Frans Wilhelm Lindqvist, in Stockholm, Sweden. Lindqvist’s patent covered the burner, which was based on Nybergs blowtorch work. This burner was turned upward on the stove instead of outward as on the blowtorch. Lindqvist partnered with Johan Viktor Svenson and established J.V. Svenson’s Kerosene Stove Factory for manufacturing the new stoves which were sold under the name Primus. The first model was the No.1 stove, which was quickly followed by a number of similarly-designed stoves of different models and sizes. Shortly thereafter, B.A. Hjorth & Co. (later Bahco), a tool and engineering firm begun in Stockholm in 1889, acquired the exclusive rights to sell the Primus stove. The efficient Primus stove quickly earned a reputation as a reliable and durable stove in everyday use, and it performed especially well under adverse conditions: it was the stove of choice for Fridtjof Nansen's North Pole attempt, Roald Amundsen's South Pole expedition, and Richard Byrd’s North Pole expedition. Primus stoves also accompanied George Mallory's ill-fated expedition to Mount Everest in 1924, as well as Tenzing and Hillary's successful one in 1953. While many other companies also made portable stoves of a similar design to the Primus, this style is often generically referred to as a “Primus” stove, regardless of the manufacturer." BD

@Hans Roberht That’s a nice theory there, Hans, but (ouch for you) completely in error. These two stoves in the video were made by Swedish factories in Sweden in 1946 and 1948. (Take a look at the description box below the video.) If you recall your history, Germany in those years had just been crushed in WWII by the Allies and the Soviet Union. It’d been bombed into near oblivion for their attempt to conquer the world under Hitler which killed millions of people. Those two groups (Allies and USSR) divided the demolished Germany into multiple States and instituted marshal law. Both sides (Allies and USSR) spent 1945 to 1949 destroying what little industry was left standing in Germany so that there’d be no chance that Germany could launch another attempt at world domination. It was only in 1949 and 1950 that East and West Germany were allowed to form (supervised) governments again. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Germany_(1945-1990) Soo… yahoo for Sweden for building awesome stoves and sorta staying out of the war, sort of, kind of! But, not a chance these fine stoves were built by post-war starving Germans, I'm certain. 🙄😄 BD
