We must reduce the negative impact of plastic in our communities. We learn how to live a plastic-free life. A renowned conservationist, Alexis McGivern is currently working as a Program Manager for Swiss-based Gallifrey Foundation and seconded to IUCN's Global Marine and Polar Program. Her expertise is devoted towards matters of sustainable development, as well as marine conservation. McGivern seeks to create a zero plastic society, whilst leaving a lasting impact on not only her local community, but also the wider international sphere. Thank you so much, this was an inspiring speech, I've just started to try the zero waste life because I noticed (thanks to people like you in social media) how much damage plastic and other single use materials cause to earth, animals and also humans. I was feeling a little discourage since the people from my country have a really bad environmental culture, but now I feel much better because like you said it's something progressive and I will continue spreading awareness about this topic and trying to keep my life without plastic. I don't usually watch ted talks, but I didn't find any parts that triggered any reactions of them. She made small jokes, but the punchlines were either monotone, and didn't make it obvious it was a joke, or were pretty cringy.

Great argument. I just bought a pack of Tru Earth laundry sheets instead a plastic jug of laundry soap. I'll to reduce my plastic consumption.

Also metals are easier and more efficient to separate and chemically process in recycling plants (even aluminum with right magnet)

I've watched quite a few of these ted talks and videos on youtube on which, mostly women, they talk about their kit and what we should do in our everyday lives to reduce plastic. But why is it that only a few of them talk about reusable menstrual products? That was my first step to reduce plastic and at the time I was more concerned on the amount of money I was saving rather than the waste.

Any step is the "first step".. Besides, they only have so much time to talk. They try to condense to get the most important and easiest things to incorporate into our lives. Up to you to look around for more tips.

I think they want to appeal to the whole audience. If there is a lot of men maybe talking about our period blood would turn off their ears? Haha. But totally happy i switched. Havent gotten to use it yet because i had one or two periods in between my daughter and getting pregnant with my son. But looking forward to using it

Changing to washable pads is one of the best things that I did for myself! Women don’t realize that the plastic in their disposable pads can disrupt female hormones. My periods even got lighter. It took awhile, but it did finally happen. I have been using washables for a few years now.

I don’t have a bulk store near me, but a nearby grocery store has a bulk aisle. Although I am limited in what I can buy bulk, I do the best that I can. I can buy my lentils bulk and organic, so I do.

I hate plastic! It’s all around me and sticks around me like a wet blanket. Plastic iPhone case, plastic eye glasses, plastic food containers from the supermarket, etc.

Thats the sad reality. And our world is so lazy. Im personally really bothered by it all and have begun my journey. Im excited to raise and teach my children about being more mindful

I'm 1/2 in and no mention of 'how' yet, just frustrating. Just refuse a straw, they're not necessary except for a few woth disabilities. My nearest 'bulk store' is 180km away and VERY expensive (upto 2X) with limited options, so a very urban, middle class suggestion. None of the no-plastic speakers seem to to have any interest in the use of plastics in building and furnishings (electrical insulation, light fittings and switches, foam in cushions and furniture), vehicle interiors or the horrendous amount of plastic waste in health care. A few plastic straws pale into insignificance...

What are you talking about? The collapsible containers are usually made out of silicone - not plastic. Sigh... why are people so invested in nitpicking people who are making a change instead of changing their own habits?

She may also have had it before her zero waste journey. You dont just replace all your plastic when you change. That would be a waste of products and money

I still have plastic containers from before my zero waste journey. I continue to use them because I don’t want them to end up in a landfill. I bought a lot of Tupperware years ago. It is very expensive. I would rather just use it than throw it out. If and when it wears out, I will replace it with more sustainable options.
