Hello Outpour East - I had just returned from a canoe trip and I saw so much garbage left in the woods that it irked me. Sorry if came across as "pissed". Good luck on your trip. Just remember, half the stuff you carry you will probably never use. Thanks for the comment.

Loving the info! You should do a whole video on gear, the tried and true essentials you pack on your portage and why.

Your system is great, I need to get some pullies now for my blue barrel. What fanny packs do you use. I hate carrying around another day pack for hiking. Just can't find any good options. Thanks in advance 👍

I've been tripping a prospector for years and I got an idea or two from watching your video well done. What I would like to ask is what is the line running from bow to stern along the side just underneath the gunnel for and doesn't your son have a problem with leg room with the barrel in front of him like that? You might be using that line as a control point when portaging, if so don't you have any entanglement concerns with it being there on the water?
@Hawksshadow
@Hawksshadow 3 жыл бұрын
Hello T S - I run my stern line and bow line along the gunnel and tie them to the center yoke. This allows for quick access should I require them to line a river or when landing. I always have two lines forward of the portage yoke because it affords a comfortable hand hold during portages. I usually switch arms as the portage progresses. As for the entanglement issue - good question - I find that having your lines tied along the sides of the gunnels - it keeps them out of harms way and if the canoe was to capsize - the lines stay in place and precludes them from getting in the way of recovery. Always use floating lines in a canoe. Another advantage to having ropes tied as I do along the gunnels, it affords a place to clip my gear to using carabiners. I really do appreciate the questions as it helps others. Stay well.

Out Here w/ RG Wright excellent reply thanks, I have throw bags mounted bow tip and stern tip but they are a pain to use for obvious reasons your system much easier and effective for lining and clipping. Of course when I'm in the water I can grab the throw bag swim to shore and if the shore is close enough pull my boat in, pluses minuses both ways I suppose. Can you comment on the barrel obstructing your sons legs I saw a video with him he's not little anymore so does he find that the barrel isn't in his way ? I like the idea as my wife is much lighter than me and this tip would work well to balance the load.

What thermarest models do you use?
@Hawksshadow
@Hawksshadow 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Ktown C, The pad in this video is made by a company called Protex. It's only sold at Sail outdoor stores. It is an inexpensive pad and is inferior to the thermarest pads. The Protex does not self inflate to the same extent as the thermarest but it's weight is about the same. Cost was a factor when I purchased it. That said, I have had no issues with it and it is comfortable to sleep on. Thanks for the question and happy camping.

That must be one heavy pack of it sinks. Years ago back in school we would throw our packs into the river and let them float away for about an hour. Then hop in the canoes and go get them and see what got wet inside and how well we were able to water proof everything. Never saw one sink.

We did the same thing in Scouts - it was part of a bush craft badge. The buoyancy of the pack is dependent on the make of the pack. Mine has many miles on it and is no longer water tight - that is why I always pack my gear in Sea to Summit dry bags. That said, I never take a chance - a water logged pack will bob like a cork and then slowly sink until equilibrium is met. Josh, you are absolutely correct - if your gear is waterproof, it will not sink. Thanks for the comment.

Sorry Myron for the very late response. I used to use garbage bags also and they work just as you stated. My trips have a tendency to be very long - over 140 km in length and the dry bags allow me to redistribute the weight from my pack into my food barrel as I eat through its contents. Anything that keeps your stuff dry and you happy is all that counts. Thanks very much for the comment. B.T.W. Duluth Packs Rock!

Why a barrel and not a bag? Also, how do you secure everything in the canoe - in case you do?
@Hawksshadow
@Hawksshadow 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Mort, Barrels have a rubber O ring on the lid which seals the barrel tight - scentless and water proof. A full loaded barrel will float if you happen to capsize. In fact, I have thrown my barrel in the water and tied it to shore with rope to keep the food cool- it also keeps the curious wild ones away. The barrel is attached to my bow or stern thwart via the handle via a rope and carabiner. A bag is not recommended as animals will chew through the bag to get at the food. I have experienced that and I can tell you it sucks when you lose your food and you're several days away from any means of re-supply. As to the question of securing the other essentials. I simply disconnect the shoulder strap on my canoe pack and reconnect it over the center thwart. All the other stuff is fastened via a rope to carabiners to the seats and thwarts. The last thing you need after a capsize on a wind blown lake is to be chasing after your equipment as it either sinks or floats away - Like Wilson in the movie Cast Away. Hope this helps - thanks for asking!

@@Hawksshadow, thank you for the detailed explanations! Barrels make full sense to me now. And, indeed, losing your stuff is the last thing you need on a trip; rope and carabiners are paramount - and so is actually using them!

I like the non-essentials, which is one reason I travel bigger lakes. I bring a tent AND a hammock. My chair reclines, my tarp has screen sides, I bring a firebox and a butane or alcohol stove AND a proper coffee percolator AND a bottle (plastic) of Bailey's. I sleep on a cot WITH a Sea to Summit pad and that's just for starters. I have a pillow, a novel, a hatchet and Silky saw. I bring a candle lantern, and tent light and even a string of LEDs. My backpack includes a full size bucket in the bottom. I bring binoculars, twin olive barrels and a cooler bag containing dry ice and ribeyes. All this and a couple garbage bags for other people's trash. After setting up a base camp, I take day trips under sail and make fishing expeditions. That's just how I ride. The other reason? Hard to portage when you need a brace and cane to walk.

You hit it on the head uguysrnuts. It all how people want to roll. Base camping is great because you can bring all the stuff you need to feel comfortable. Long portaging trips are taxing and every pound in the pack counts. It's awesome you get out here and do the stuff you love to do. Thanks for the comment and happy camping.
