Not deterred by the 1997 handgun ban Alan Westlake of Westlake Engineering has continued to design and sell a range of UK legal pistols allowing British shooting to continue a level of handgun shooting. We get hands on with a Westlake Engineering Alpha .375 muzzle loading revolver, showing how to load and use it with a brief history of how the gun came into existence. Enjoy!

Never thought I'd want a muzzle loader so much, just need to decide 6",4",3" or 2" 🤔think it has to be the snubby!
@thepenultimateninja5797
@thepenultimateninja5797 Жыл бұрын
The fact that it can use smokeless powder makes the snubby a viable option, since black powder really needs a long barrel to burn in. I actually have a cut-down Remington 1858, but I would be the first to admit that it's seriously impractical. I wouldn't consider any snubnose revolver to be the ideal choice for a target gun, simply because of the short sight radius, but they are fun to shoot.

I've heard of quite a few lads over here, have an FO suggest they put down suppressors for all the firearms they're requesting a slot for. @@xxxxxxxx183 Here in the UK the law is, a sentence of 3 months - 3 years you're prohibited for 5 years, (pretty sure that stands whether or not it's a suspended sentence too.) Over 3 years and it's a lifetime ban. That's how you stand on paper, of course British firearms certificates aren't, 'shall issue', it's discretionary. Lots of people get denied a certificate even though they aren't 'legally prohibited' but they're still deemed inappropriate to hold firearms. On the flip side you have many more folks who don't bother applying as they got arrested and cautioned for being boisterous as a student in 2007 so assume they'll not get one. When realistically that'd probably get overlooked if they were honest about it.

I had one of these and they are a lot of fun. Overall less hassle than a tradition ML with a (once loaded and ready to go) more modern look and feel. That said careful primer selection before a range visit is absolutely key! There's so little gap between the cylinder and frame that everything must seat completely flush and the cylinder itself kept very clean. I'm all for solutions like this and innovative people like Alan with the guts to make things happen. We'd have nothing but 19th century ML's otherwise.

Alan is such a perfectionist he makes the tolerances possibly a little too fine. Fouling will make the cylinder jam so you need to clean the cylinder between shots, especially the primer pockets, but Alan makes a tool that is quick and simple to use. You also need to only use soft lead bullets. Alan makes a beautiful swaged wad cutter but my favourite is a Hornady hollow base. In the film you see them loading a barrel wad cutter, very good and cheap. Never use a hard lead as I destroyed a cylinder and Alan had to make me a new one. Powder has to be a large flake and I used Blue Dot. Load approximates a .38 special.

Just a tip: Try lubricating the "bullets", and/or as well as stuffing the remaining chamber space with lube, something along the lines of Bore Butter, or even Crisco (lard). (This, of course, means using slightly less powder, so there is sufficient room to put lube on top of the projectiles.) This lubrication will cut down on some of the fouling, reducing the seizing up of the cylinder. (It'll also help keep the barrel clean and lubed.) You could also have a can of CLP standing by, to spritz the cylinder pin during shooting. Also, not sure if it is allowable by English law, but if so, you could consider pre-made paper cartridges. Use cigarette papers, and some light glue. Wrap the paper over a tapered wooden dowel (tapered to fit in chamber, not too snugly, not too loosely), leaving some paper at bottom , to fold over and glue. Let dry. Pour in desired/needed powder charge, then add the bullet, seating firmly on powder. Twist off the top of the paper, over the bullet, and cut away excess. (You can still even use lubed/waxed bullets, but you'll need a cardboard spacer between the powder and bullet, to not foul the powder.) Then, all that's left is pushing the paper cartridge into the chamber, and ramming it home with the loading rod. No need to puncture the paper (though you can), as the primer will burn through the paper. Besides, the paper will crush and break, when run down with the loading lever. I love my black powder pistols. I'm a little jealous though... Mine use number 10 caps (very small, hard to place), not shotgun primers. The primer setup on that Alpha looks awesome, and less troublesome than my caps-on-nipples setups. Of course, my pistols are historical reproductions, so the nipples are historically accurate, but the convenience of primer "wells" would be nice for at least some of my pistols. Have fun blowing smoke!

The revolver in this revolver looks very interesting and I would love to shoot it. I am going to assume it is like a 38 Special. I am not how well it would sell here (I live in the USA) as our working reproduction cap and ball revolvers can be had for about $300USD. But it definitely has some fantastic innovation. Remember, following the law is not a loophole.

Yeah, $300 for a few Piettas, mostly brass 1851 Navies that cost that or less. Most other Piettas, and certainly Ubertis, are in the $350 to $400 range now, minimum. I miss the days when I could get a deal like my Pietta Rem NMA (1858). It cost $235, and I got a spare cylinder. The pandemic, and the run on all things guns, put an end to those days!

3:03 Armscor are resellers for Alfa revolvers, which are decent, but for the love of god, stay away from their Rock Island Armory revolvers - they are absolute junk. I had one, and I had to return it four times over a period of six months before they finally managed to supply me with a working one. Luckily, I live in America so I was able to do the returns by mail, but I shudder to think how difficult it would be for someone in the UK, especially as they had to replace my gun twice (ie different serial numbers). I expect Westlake do their own quality control, so it's less risky, but the guns are so poorly made, I don't have much confidence in their long term durability. Once they sent me a working one, I took it straight to the gun store and traded it towards the purchase of a different gun. I made videos to document the faulty guns and return process, so I urge you to watch those first if you're considering buying one.

If I was getting almost 100fps with 200grain slugs out a 5.5in barrel in 44cal imagine what you could do with a 65grain .257 prob around 22mag speeds or a heavier 125grain for more fpe. I have some issues with these revolvers.. firstly the primers leak and blast muck into the action. These frames are not designed to be opened and cleaned and are not easy to keep in working order. My main issue is however with the loading sequence. I really do not like the idea of folk carrying round loaded and primed cylinders. This practice is not allowed on "normal" muzzle loading pistols which should only be primed on the firing point. Loaded cylinders are IMHO dangerous and are capable of discharging if dropped as the primers are all exposed.
