hello you potters, how are you today.
this video was made specifically to show you how to load your greenware and ready it for a bisque Kiln load.
we go over how to fire a killing Master touch screen and a kill master control panel that most people should have if they have their own personal kilns.
hopefully you found this video helpful although if you have a manual kiln
pleas watch this video
• How to fire a Skutt 18...
ok. that's all for me, we shall go over how to load a glaze Kiln fairly soon although it is essentially the same process without the greenware touching.

One thing I would have added is that you can’t just put stuff on the bottom of your kiln. There should be a shelf at the bottom before you start loading. I didn’t know this :x great video ! Thank you so much for taking time to teach us pottery newbs !

Thanks Donte, Good info as usual. I have a 22 year old Evenheat kiln that I bought used based on your suggestion for $350. After 15 firings the button panel died (it was very old and I'm sure it was used heavily). I just bought a Genesis 2.0 controller that functions very much like the KM controller you showed us. I can't wait to install it as I've been kilnless for weeks and running out of shelf space! I'm going to replace the elements as well so I'll basically have a new kiln for about $600-$700 more. I would never have gone down this road of buying a used kiln and upgrading it without the knowledge and "I ain't afraid to fail" attitude I received from watching your videos, so Thanks again!

Looking forward to that next step. In search of a used kiln. However, if I don't find one in the next six months, I'll spend the extra to get a new one. I'm thankful for all your guidance that will make that first bisque experience successful.

I was taught to be mindful when stacking or nesting things in the kiln, depending on their shapes & expected shrinkage, it’s not unheard of for stuff to fit together before the firing and then be locked together after. Just keep an eye out if you’re using more than one claybody or have pieces with overhangs in one direction or the other. 🥰

Damn how grateful I am for the videos you have put online. So enriching. I’m basically teaching everything myself after learning how to throw for like 6months at a pottery class. It’s been about 2yrs since I’m making stuff and now I plan on getting a kiln. This video is so informative and well explained. ❤️❤️ I feel I could actually go ahead and start looking for a kiln for myself.

God bless the people out there that can have the ability to wait to open the kiln tell it is fully cooled. My kiln is Usually opened at the point where I say. "I'll Just take a little peek" followed by "Damn that is hot" Then followed by Donte's "Few moments later......."Going off in my head. Then the actual kiln opening begins.

nice! I'm on a stage of planning to buy a kiln :) I still need to make sure electricity will be ok in my house in the forest 😂 but I'm already stressed... I need to make research about kiln safety - kiln in wooden garage next to wooden house in the woods... I can't sleep even thinking about it 😂

Thank you Donte. I truly needed this video. I plan on purchasing a kiln in the next few months. I just had one question. I plan on putting my kiln in the garage. I live in Kentucky. Our weather has a wide range. During the winter when I am cooling off the kiln load is there anything special I should do to make sure I am not cooling it too fast? Do I skip opening the lid for a full day after the fire? During the summer when its very hot do I need any precautions? Those are my only thoughts. Thank you so much for your instructional videos. I look forward to them every week. I work in healthcare and pottery is my stress relief. Your humor goes a long way to help my mental health :). I bet you never knew you were my therapist!

Very useful video Donte. As you talked about venting I wanted to ask you a slightly different thing. Is a kiln exhaust/ventilation system and absolute must. I bought a brand new Skutt 822 but it’s not installed yet as I haven’t moved to my new property yet. Is it best for me to buy the Envirovent2 and get this ventilation system installed at the same time or would a well ventilated workspace be sufficient? Thanks.

Can I ask please as to what the time is usually for the kiln to get to 1000 c ? I have a very old Kiln that only has a gauge to tell me as to how hot it gets not ideal but it was a gift I haven’t used it yet as I need to purchase some shelves and posts first and am pretty scared to do my first bisque fire 🙃

i read that you need to prop the lid open first 1000degrees. Is that correct or unnecessary? i just did test firing ( brand new kiln) left lid propped on that latch until 1000 and then closed the lid leaving the top peep hole open. For bisque firing i don’t need to do that ( prop the lid in the beginning for venting) or do i? Great video and lots of good info! Thanks

@EarthNationCeramics

There's no set time for hours. It's mostly temperature. The manual says later each the lowest possible temperature before the opening the kiln.... But most of us don't....

Very random question…What to do if you have pieces that need to be bisqued but don’t have access to a kiln for a few months even longer then that…?should I avoid making pieces if I know this or is it okay to have a piece air dry and then I could still bisque it even after a year? Should I not allow it to dry and just wrap it? But I assume mold could grow from doing that

I had slip sitting around for a few days and noticed it has started to smell bad. Is there a way to salvage it? What should we do with slip to prevent it standing in water when it isn't drying out quickly enough. Is it best to spread it out on a board and let it dry out?
@EarthNationCeramics
@EarthNationCeramics 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it kind of seems like you already have the right idea. Firstly recycled clay, and slip, do kind of smell. Especially based on the clay it can smell bad or worse. Tldr that's normal. But if you're looking for a way to actually recycle Clay on a piece of plaster or board here is this video for you that I made some time ago kzfaq.info/get/bejne/irGTfduizLPPnX0.html
