How to Lose the Fear of Being an Idiot

We tend to fear being an idiot as a terrible, remote possibility. This keeps us anxious and unsettled. Far better to accept head on, and with good grace, that we are - all of us - idiots. And that may just be OK.

“‘The Inner Idiot’ is a bracing term used to describe a substantial, hugely influential and strenuously concealed part of everyone. An Idiot is what we deeply fear being, it is what we suspect in our darkest hours that we might be - and it is what we should simply accept, with humour and good grace, that we often truly are. A decent life isn’t one in which we foolishly believe we can slay or evade The Inner Idiot; it’s one in which we practice the only art available to us: sensible cohabitation…”

The School of Life Why does the voice over have to be in British English?
@jem30six
@jem30six 6 жыл бұрын
@Thomas Begen I think it would be because The School of Life is the brainchild of Alain de Botton, who does the voice overs, and he has a British accent. But I am curious as to which accent you would prefer on these videos and why? (now i will release my inner idiot) ... I love Alains voice, its so soothing, and I've read in many comments of others think so too. But if i HAD to have any other accent, then maybe a male voice from Tennessee particularly if he said "bear huntin' " in a southern accent a few times, that would work for me!
@dasein9980
@dasein9980 6 жыл бұрын
Jem Thirtysix Valid point. It's just annoying to me how the British accent is popularized. It seems like there are many channels with similar accents. I would prefer standard American English, like is used for broadcasting. An accent that is neutral. I stopped watching this video specifically because I didn't want to hear this accent.
@jem30six
@jem30six 6 жыл бұрын
I'm Australian, so a neutral accent for me would be Australian, however I enjoy accents from all over the world. I can only speak English sadly. If you click on the School of Life icon and go to their channel you will see the video which explains that this group is world wide. Enjoy the diversity Thomas ;)

I think it's better to save the confessions of foolishness to a later date when you've worked out whether your potential partner has the maturity to respect your honesty. For some people, your confessions can just provide anecdotes to provide laughs at his/her workplace. Love many, trust few. Always paddle your own canoe.

I think the inner idiot is hidden due to the harsh criticisms of today's society. In many cases for trying to gain favor for a good cause, one slip up is all it takes for someone to latch onto and berate you, giving the illusion of whatever point you've tried to make invalid. It's why we hide it and how we dig the grave deeper and deeper to our own inner idiocy as a society. I believe this is what can cause a society to slowly crumble.

1:50 this is so true, everybody, esspecially those in adolences, embrace your idiot. You will be made fun of by others at first,but you will be free of acting like someone you aren't. And they will be envious. It relieves a huge weight off your chest and people will start to accept and embrace you. It takes patience though.

But you are a student so you are on a learning curve. Your teacher should be teaching you stuff that is somewhat difficult to learn. If no one makes any mistakes in that class, then the teacher is teaching at a level which is too easy for the class. And your mistake gives the teacher the chance to point out whatever it is that she is driving at e.g. "So remember students when we multiply a minus number with a plus number, the result is a minus answer." When the teacher sees several blank faces as she says that, she realises that she needs to demonstrate that point in more detail. So your wrong answer creates a teaching opportunity.

@@tracesprite6078 It's been years since I posted this, but at the time I was living in Spain, and was at a private school, and the teachers there were abusive manipulators who only wanted to ridicule and embarrass you in front of everyone, you would hear them shout at their top of their lungs for the smallest mistake you made, the main reason I urged my parents to get me out of Spain in the first place, it's crazy how some people in the school system treat the education process that is meant to be fun and informative.

What if my inner idiot became almost my first personality and people can't take me seriously anymore unless i just shut up and try to act cool? I already found the person who loves my inner idiot and I'm glad of that, but I'm still afraid about how will I ever be able to fit into society or find a job without having to put up an average and apathetic wall to anyone and at the same time feeling well with myself and how I behave. I hope not to sound like me, me , me, but I thought I could share some of the most embarrassing examples of this from my life, in case it helps anyone to feel a little better about himself: 1. When I first came to Germany to study, I only had enough money to survive for a few weeks. So I had to find a job immediately. But I didn't speak German..So I thought I could go to Turkish restaurants to ask if they had work for me. Then I went to this fancy restaurant and asked for the boss. He asked me what I could do. I said, anything. Doing the dishes, working at the bar, waiting tables etc. etc...So he asked me: - Do you speak German? - Oh no, not yet. But I started learning yesterday! - Do you have any experience working in a restaurant?? - No...but I am sure I can learn very fast. He was really kind. He said that he had enough people at the moment, but he would call me if he needed me. But then I had a question. I have absolutely no sense of orientation. So I was wondering how I was gonna go back to my place from there! It was supposed to be 20 minutes away. But it took me 40 minutes to get there! Anyway, he asked for a paper from the waiter and started drawing a very detailed map. Unfortunately I have this problem of not being able to sit still. I always swing back and forth on a chair...So I was doing that, while looking at him drawing the map, while imagining that it would be nice if he drew some trees,and birds and the sun etc. I was basically dreaming and swinging.... And then I have heard the noise! The chair, MY chair, fell on the floor!..I could hold on to the table and find my balance, but it was so loud that everyone heard it! But I must say that the boss was such a gentleman. He stood up to put the chair straight. And went on to explain me the map. But imagine, what he must have thought of me?? I was trying to convince the guy for twenty minutes that I was able to do anything ( !!) , just to prove in the end that I was NOT even able to sit on a chair properly! Of course he never called! But I kept that map for quite a while and put the trees and birds on it myself:-) 2. I studied classical guitar at the conservatory here.Unfortunately it is not an orchestra instrument. But I loved to go to the rehearsals of the orchestra. You learn a lot, just by watching the instructions of the conductor. So, that evening a very famous French violin professor was gonna conduct the orchestra.Unfortunately I arrived late, so I had to wait outside, for the right time to go in. Then, when they stopped playing for a moment, I opened the door very slightly, then I stood by the wall, next to a couple of other students. I was so happy that the conductor didn't notice me and that I managed to find a great place where I could see the whole orchestra. When they started playing again, the music was so wonderful and relaxing, I felt like I could just let myself go.... so I leaned back just a little bit... And in that moment the room turned completely dark, and the whole orchestra STOPPED playing!! Unfortunately I turned the lights of with my butt!! To stop a Schubert symphony with your butt is quite an achievement though!! I bet the famous French conductor could never do that. And then when I turned the lights on, the entire orchestra and the man, they all were looking and laughing at me.... 3. And then there is the story of the plane I missed, even though I went to the airport 8 hours before the flight... But that's really too embarrassing to tell...But I swear, it could happen to any of you!!! :-) So what is the solution? In my case, I am not sure if there is one! But I really love the following little poem and I think we must learn to look at our ENTIRE BEING, just the same way as the man in this poem looks at his left hand. With compassion, pity and wonder: "MY LEFT HAND I got drunk and again I thought of you My clumsy hand My pitiful hand. " Orhan Veli Kanik ( 1914- 1950, Istanbul )

I wish I had learnt this lesson earlier. I've lived my whole life trying to hide my inner idiot and try to seem serious and a perfectionist. Only times my inner idiot comes out is when I'm around people I'm comfortable around (there aren't many of them) and they never seem to had a problem with, he was actually quite likable. I'm now 28 and feel like I missed a lot of life experiences because of that fear but hopefully it will change because like it is said in the video I feel like i could be a better person if i could just embrace my clumsy childish inner idiot.

I realized that most times we get embarrassed, we make such a remark over it when “people” don’t really care much about you messing up because we see people messing up all the time, we are not perfect, but when we mess up we get more ashamed than what people actually think.

Why is almost every of your videos matching my current mindstate sometimes at an exact moment? Is this a little bit alike those esoteric astro channels on TV who always know whats wrong with you because they hold it so general? Despite that. I love your vids and I really think they give me Inspiration to think of myself differently. Thanks for that !

I've learned to embrace being a bumbling diot. I take it on as a role when dealing with the outside world. What I dread is finding the nasty and evil idiot who wants to be deliberately unkind and cruel and sometimes unknowingly is.

Just be grateful that you are are not a rude or cruel person. Imagine what that person has been through to become cruel. Imagine what it is like being the kind of person that others dread meeting. And hey! you are NOT such a person. You won an important lottery there. Well done!

@@inxbyinxby7837 I am going to give you a small assignment, inxby inxby. Every time that you think about a foolish mistake you made, I want you to also remember THREE good choices you made. They can be large or small and they can be things you normally take for granted. e.g. I drive carefully every time I get in my car. I'm courteous to people who work in shops. I pay my taxes. I have a pleasant-looking garden where the bees (who are struggling to survive these days) can find some nectar to give them strength. I manage my money sensibly. I avoid using insecticides as much as I can. I say encouraging things to people who are having a tough day. ... Those are small things which make a huge difference. Some of those things e.g. driving well, are well-established habits, but they are still heroic. Every time you drive well, you have saved someone's life. There are families sitting down to dinner with all their family members present who owe you a huge debt of thanks. So, yes, we ALL make mistakes but we are all heroes, too.
