Dr. McDougall's position on overt fats: nuts, seeds, avocado is that they are not necessary but to eat them in moderation and to skip them if you are obese. I stopped eating them a month ago with amazing results.

Also, a well nourished body does not keep sending the hunger signal. It's not just about filling the empty space of the stomach. So, if a person eats 1500 "empty" calories, the body will continue to send the hunger signal. That's why under-nourished fat people continue to be hungry.

This is just not true 😂 many people eat small, nutrient sparse meals and are very thin & satisfied. Weight gain has more to do with using food to fill emotional needs. 🤍

America is a well fed, under nourished country. Nutrients are the key. If you eat a ton of junk food that has no nutrients, you're going to be hungry. This was always me. Documentaries and studies show that that a lot of the obese population is undernourished and suffering from diseases caused by nutrient deficiency. Sugar is the biggest killer, not fat. When I was younger I didn't know that I was eating bad and yet I could never shake the weight. After going RAW (still ate meat- salmon and eggs) and adding homemade juices to my diet, I dropped so much weight I got offers to model from photographers and decided to work at an agency. I modeled for 7 years. I never looked like a healthy 18 year old until I was 24 years old (when I started my new lifestyle) and I kept that shape. I had more energy and gained tons of confidence...moved up in my job too. I did 1 or 2 week fasts every 3 or 4 months and felt amazing. I did not gain the weight back because I continued my lifestyle (plus fasting does not make you gain weight after despite what people think. Studies have been done to support this. It's a natural part of life). Once you accept and embrace a healthy lifestyle, it's not hard to stick to it. Telling yourself you must suffer until a certain time makes it harder because you are telling yourself you are suffering. Instead, think of a NEW you and a forever happier you. There is no magic solution to weight loss. America is doing everything wrong and we are the victims of our own society. The food industry puts so much garbage in food as well. Going raw and whole (and organic) is the only way to control the quality of food you get. We can look to Europe for our answers on how to eat and stay slim. They also have strict law on farming and what goes into foods (like banning some of the ingredients our FDA allows). So much of the processed stuff does so much damage to our hormonal balances-making us fat. In Europe they pride themselves in local, organic foods. I always add how sad I am that nobody seems interested to know how I lost so much weight and look so beautiful. I hated how I looked before. As soon as I tell them, it immediately becomes a "boring story". They assume I was always tiny and write me off. It's sad because I see others doing what I did (eating natural, real food) and got the same results and yet nobody wants to believe it. It's like a crazy fad to them. I don't think our ancestors thought it was a fad. It was natural and all they had. Processing strips nutrients and turns the food into something our bodies can't use being the original food God gave us. It is a shame we have to pay more for the original form of something, again, that's America. but I have saved myself from health problems. Most of my family is overweight and all have health problems. I'm still thin, healthy and happy. I've been to Japan, Korea, allover Europe and even Africa. I see how they look (amazing) and how they eat (natural foods, LESS/NO sugar). Americans really are the leaders in ill health, sickness, and obesity and it boils down to quality of foods. I hope this helps someone out there.

Amen to everything you say!!! Whole foods is the way to go. I just listen to my body and see how I feel. Some days I have an avocado is maybe even two because my body needs it. Then somedays I just don't crave or feel like I need any fat. The body is smart that way. Like if you don't have great quality fruit you will crave salty foods or other things so you need to eat greens to get that nutritional boost your body needs. When I started listening to my body and being aware of myself things just started to become easier.

Thanks for sharing. I just met and went to Dr. McDougall's lecture in Hawaii and he was super lean. I was actually surprised. I did really well having fruits in the am and then the rest of the day rice with a bit of him salt, while training for my ultra marathons..and guess what? I slimmed down, digestion was perfection and I won my first 100k running race in the mountains of Vermont and Also ended up taking 10th place in the nationals for a 50 mile race. The only hole was I feared fat at the time and I didn't eat many veggies...I would do it adding those in from now on, bc I know better what works long term. Can't go wrong eating whole plant foods and moving my body~

Katie Jo well, he seemed a lot more frail than dr graham that is for sure. I was just surprised to see him super thin bc he does not appear to be in his videos...but he did explain why actually in another interview he had done...He said he was not always perfect on his own diet bc he had gone to eat out at lots of restaurants while travelling and the servers and chefs would get his order wrong and add some oil and he didn't always take it back to be a pain in the neck..lol..Anyway, he was honest about it and I liked that.

CocoFripouille Thanks! If you want to complete any long distance endurance sport, I suggest, building up on the mileage and not focusing on speed at all. It's a zone you want to get into and the rhythm will get you to become more motivated to continue. Good nutrition and sleep are big components and will help you stay positive...oh, and eating on your long runs. Basically, I carried dates and water with me on all of my training runs. I had 3 dates every hour on the hour and water of course!!! Hope this helps! I do coaching if you are interested, contact me on Facebook under Victoria Toussie Arnstein and I would be happy to help in more detail if you choose and see it as a good fit!

I fear like they are a cult sometimes and it just makes you feel like another sort of restrictive diet again and feels like another eating disorder in a way which I wanted to not have again. No stress, whole food is way too go. ,:) I love not counting or weighing things or myself and I just hate living off numbers, so unnatural.

Hi, I've been a vegetarian for about 10 years now and I'm making the transition to veganism. So far it's been great, no cravings or anything, but I think that has a lot to do with my mindset. I've read the Starch Solution and it was refreshing that there was very little guidance on what to eat and what not to eat. I had done Eat to Live which I still adore, but couldn't keep up because I didn't get enough starch. I kept craving it and would fall right off the bandwagon and eat a ton of frozen yogurt or and pizza. It's nice that I feel free on this diet, but honestly I still occasionally have a vegan cupcake (special occasions or when someone else is paying), but since I've learned about intuitive eating and I know that eating a cupcake is not a moral choice I no longer go into week long binges after a cookie. I am glad that I've come to this stage in my life and I want to that you for your videos that helped me get here.

Haha. I got mad when you mentioned the 1500 calories is the same no matter what thing. Makes me so angry that people think that's true. It's SO not true. 1500 calories of straight up cheese is not the same as 1500 calories of straight up broccoli. Broccoli promotes health while cheese will make you fat and greasy. Calorie restriction...I am so done with it! Everyone likes to tout how they have the perfect diet solution...but then they tell you that you have to measure everything out in order for it to work. It becomes unsustainable in the long term. None of that on this lifestyle. Just eat and your body will take care of the rest. It is a diet that is sustainable for your entire life.

And then sometimes speaking on a specific topic like on this video. You progress on weight loss is always interesting to hear. Did you do a video on your journey as vegan yet? Like how/when did you start, what did you do first, what then, what happened to your weight etc. And have you done an introduction video on yourself like how old are you, where you're from (draw my life -kinda thing but without the drawing if that's too much :))? Now am on the starch solution, i was on it for a while before the RT4 and my weight was stable, i was happy and satisfied no counting calorie, unlimited but not obsessed with a number whether above or under 2000. It just made me happy and my weight was 53-54 kg height 156.5 cm now with the RT4 initial weight and other factors i got to 61kg :( am back on starch solution and the weight is coming off very very slowly like a turtle but i feel happy and satisfied. I think RT4 would've worked eventually but i just got frustrated with being fat and having to stuff myself to get above 2000. I think i am happier this way, eating abundance that way is just not me, it felt like a task. Good luck dear.

Hey, you always say to eat only when you're hungry and "listen to our body". But I have a problem with this. For me, if I'd listen to my body, I would go days without drinking any water and I literally don't want to eat until late at night. I can go whole day without eating anything and late at night I want to binge and eat fatty foods. So I don't listen to my body and try to get normal breakfast in, drink at least 2l of water and have a normal lunch too..

Hi Hannah, I have just started with this lifestyle change. I am naturally not really much of a meat eater because I have lived with vegans in the past.. so, cutting out meat and poultry are not an issue for me. I do like fish, but I am happy to leave them in peace now. My question is about oil. I do need some fats in my diet and I am not really active at this point in my life. I have been putting about a tablespoon on my veggies and potatoes.. what is the deal with oils? I could potentially try to be without them, but I am keeping them to a low. I also love avocados. I think if I did not have a little oil in my diet that I would be having a hard time and I could potentially binge. Are there portion controls in terms of how much rice or rice you can eat? Thanks. I am really happy to have found you! Oh, I bought your book and look forward to trying some of the recipes. Happy to have my Vitamix!!

Juliana Beasley Omega-3 oils are really good for your brain and cardiovascular system. Its one of the fats your body can't produce on its own. Although you can get this fat from fish, the amount of mercury that comes with it can be more detrimental then the fat will be helpful. Mercury is very heavy, toxic metal that can bypass your blood-brain barrier and cause memory loss, dementia, and Alzheimers disease. You also need to consume omega-3 in the correct proportion to other fats like 6s and 9s in a 3:1:1 ratio. Thankfully nature does this for you in nuts and seeds such as walnuts and flaxseeds. The cleanest and healthiest fats will come from plant based foods like nuts (almonds, walnuts, brazil nuts, pecans ect.), seeds (hemp, chia, flax, savi, sunflower), coconut oil, and avocados. The only things vegans really need to be concerned about missing in their diets are b12 and omega 3s if they aren't consuming enough nuts. It only takes about a handful of nuts or a couple table spoons of ground flax in a smoothie to meet your fat requirements. If you stick to plant based foods you shouldn't have to worry about missing out on many macro or micro nutrients. Its been shown that we do not need as much protein as many sources claim. However, for those concerned about their protein intake, 100 calories of broccoli has more protein than 100 calories of steak. If you use olive oil you should be fine. Just remember that fat calories are much denser so they are a little harder to burn in comparison to carbs and there are 120 calories in one tablespoon of oil. Personally, i would recommend some portion control on rice. White rice will spike your insulin since it has been stripped of the outer germ that contains most of the plant's minerals and fiber. Brown and wild rice are completely fine and healthy but they just are not as densely packed with nutrients as most other plant based foods. Sorry I'm not Hannah but I hope this helped! -Erin T :)

so the ratio of vegetables to starches really does not matter does it.....although the majority of what you eat should be starches? I know some diets want you sticking to a certain ratio when it comes to this food group vs that food group. I started eating potoatoes (a week ago) but am needing more variety so I have started eating brown rice with beans.

Imagine I ate 2,000, hell 4,000! Calories worth of Veggies such as Celery and say kidney beans for example. I`ll burn more than that, just by sitting because the average person (AVERAGE!) will burn more calories of such foods; say celery and etc. There are plenty more foods out there that are known as Negative calorie foods. The calorie counting is not for all. Every body is different and one diet `will not fit all, that goes for High Protein diets, High fats, being a carnivore or even a vegan. There is a diet out there that will work for each and everyone of us, you just have to discover it. Keep up the great work Hannah :)

What are your thoughts on white rice, do you recommend brown over white? Great video, I'm enjoying watching your journey :)
@HighCarbHannah
@HighCarbHannah 9 жыл бұрын
Nicola Neary Yes i recommend brown over white. Why is because it isn't refined and it does have more vitamins, minerals, natural fats and fiber in it. Some people find its harder to digest but that is because they normally are always eating white rice. It takes time for your body to adjust from eating simpler carbohydrates to more complex whole food form carbs. Brown rice is much more filling IMO I can only eat like half the portion I would over if I had white rice.

I used to have a really crappy diet. I ended up doing weight watchers and lost 80 pounds. I still ate the same crap as always, just less of it. Simply eating less lead to me losing weight. Unfortunately I couldn't keep it off and gained it all back and then some. This time around I am focusing on health first. No point in losing weight if I am not going to be healthy. My cholesterol and triglycerides are in great shape. So now I need to work on getting rid of some of this extra fat. So yea at least for some people calories are calories. When did weight watchers I had a crap diet devoid of fruits and veggies but I still lost a boat load of weight. These days I eat plenty of veggies and I am obese. It's all due to excessive calories. Probably all that coconut oil I have been using.

For what i saw in a dc mcdougall video, the mc dougall max weight loss is essentially the starch solution, but make your dish only 60 percent starch and the rest non starchy vegetables, no nuts and avocados, no bread or pasta, no fake meats that have a ton of oil, so really low fat overall. I was on a 45%p/30%c/25%f non vegan diet for 6 months and was losing weight effortlessly . I'm trying the vegan diet now cuz i wanna be vegan. Eating oatmeal, beans, lots of veggies, soya mince, fruits. I have a bmr of 1650 calories. I only walk for an hour a day. Clean the apartment a bit and I'm gaining weight like crazy. I went from 61.4 kg to 62.1 in two days and I'm eating 1600 calories. I measure my weight in the morning after going to the bathroom ( I make sure I poop everything out). I've been doing the same when I was doing the high protein diet. I drink a lot of water. No sugar. no salt. I don't know what's wrong. It's making me very depressed. I used to be 88 kg and I don't wanna go back to that. Someone please help

+Barrak Sadeq I do a 50c/25f/25p split typically(though I'm not a vegan). 3500 calories = 1 lb of fat. Unless you consumed 3500 over your TDEE, you didn't gain fat in those 2 days. It sounds like your glycogen levels are just higher than what you were used to. When you fill up your glycogen stores like that, you're basically holding more water weight. So that half kg is not fat, but increased water weight. I can gain about 5-6 lbs of water weight just if I have a weekend of eating pizza and beer and stuff. But come tuesday/wednesday when glycogen levels normalize, I lose it all. I would recommend adding more protein. Your body requires .65-.75 g of protein per lb of lean body mass to maintain a positive nitrogen balance. If you have a negative nitrogen balance, ie. these low protein diets, you will continually lose muscle density/lean mass. Lean mass is the most important variable in affecting your resting metabolic rate. And it also helps prolong your able life, and protects your body. If you let your body deteriorate, you will become more prone to injuries, on top of having a lowered metabolic rate. And we know that lowered IGF-1 levels(what you get with decreasing muscle density) results in compromised cognitive function in the elderly. So throw those legumes in your diet and build some muscle; I'd recommend avoiding the soy though, it's terrible for you.
