THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! I'm soooo tired of hearing doctors give the same old weight loss advice which DOESN'T WORK! For me, I finally overcame my fear of trying intermittent fasting. I'm doing 18/6 (fast from 9pm night until 3pm next afternoon; eat between 3pm and 9pm). I've started at just every other day. And I'm losing fat, not muscle! I feel really good, even energized, on the days I fast. Anyway, just this one 57 y/o experience with this somewhat new weight loss and healthy lifestyle approach.

@@Kellykittymom For me Kelly, I do take a handful of prescription medications in the am and pm and while some recommend taking with food/liquid, I've discovered none cause me any stomach upset when taken on an empty stomach. You can also reduce fasting hours, although I think a minimum of 12 hours is recommended to have the fasting benefits. You can actually start your fast AFTER breakfast if you need breakfast to take your medications. You could fast from let's say 8am until 8pm which would be 12 hours, then eat a late dinner, sleep, then eat breakfast. I think that's a little harder than fasting overnight where you get many of the fasting hours while sleeping. But if you're a night-time snacker, this schedule might work better for you as you are allowed, per fasting protocol, to eat during your non-fasting hours. I do not follow any specific food restrictions during my non-fasting hours. I try to eat healthy and balanced, but I also let myself eat the sweets, carbs and snacks I like :) I don't count calories.

@@kevabela6307 If a pill is fat soluble, you need some kind of fat for it to work properly, it doesn't mean it's for your stomach. Put some MCT oil in your tea or whatever liquid. I used inter. fasting occasionally to shrink my tummy so I eat less & aren't hungry thru the day then stop it.

It's so important to spread this information, because otherwise you really do feel insane. I'm only 31, but at 29 I started having problems with my hormones. I was active, I was eating well, but my weight kept creeping up. (Along with hair loss, hirsutism, irritability, mood swings, temperature sensitivity, hot flashes, night sweats, etc.) All the advice I could find to deal with this new, weirdly-distributed weight promoted cutting calories. I couldn't cut back any more! I wasn't about to starve myself, I knew that couldn't be the answer. I've gotten a lot of it (though not all) under control with simple birth control, but my stomach remains larger than it's ever been, and very prone to bloating. This is something I can deal with, but whenever I see people say that calories in-calories out is the full picture I kind of want to explode. They have no idea of the role hormones play.

Yes, many fail to realize, especially doctors, that depression MOST OFTEN has a biological, physiological or genetic etiology (not to exclude sociological as we live in a sick, grossly unjust, immoral society fueled by obnoxious greed, entitlement, money-power grabs and inhumanity).Hormone imbalance is a huge cause of depression (Thank you Dr. Haver!) Many glandular disturbances, i.e. hypothyroidism/ Grave's Disease, Hashimotos, will cause depression. Up to 90% of serotonin is produced in the gut so conditions like leaky gut/gastritis/GI inflammation will eventually cause depression. Nearly all neurological disorders, including Parkinson's, Herpes viruses, head injury/stroke, dementia, even normal aging, will lead to depression because any condition that damages brain cells then causes damage to the mitochondria. Dopamine is produced in the mitochondria. I'm so tired of ignorant doctors looking at depression as a 'stand alone' condition rather than, first and foremost, a SIGN/SYMPTOM of an underlying medical etiology, or even a societal problem (but, of course, we are dealing with the for-profit corporate medical establishment where an anti-depressant pill is cheaper than in-depth medical evaluation with costly tests). Immediately the doctor blames--and there is always BLAME when it comes to mental health diagnoses--the patient, presuming he/she has some sort of mental dysfunction due to irrational, non-productive thoughts, 'unreasonable' sadness or grief, or just an 'inexplicable' difficulty coping with plain old life, forgetting that many swim daily in a sea of poverty, hopelessness, despair seeing no future in a far-gone world that cares nothing for them. And THEN the real kicker, from the day you get the depression 'label', every other health concern you will every have will be attributed to your 'depression' and you'll be referred to mental health professionals. Meanwhile serious even deadly medical problems go undiscovered and untreatef. It's completely irresponsible, incompetent, reprehensible medicine.

I moved around the country due to my career so no consistent doctor relationship. I had a 30 something female GP who was the worst doc ever. I was 50. She was young and I thought “oh, cool, someone who is up to date in female treatments. Someone I could bond with, as she was the age of my daughters. She was thin and ambitious, but unfortunately like a teenager know-it-all. Gave no interest to my perimenopausal symptoms, like weight gain and frozen shoulder. Gave me the chart on the standard nutritional pyramid and literally told me to stop eating bon-bons. Didn’t ask me what was going on, didn’t demonstrate any empathy. WTF, I had not consumed a single bon-bon in my life and had not changed my calorie intake at all. I told her I was once a skinny B too and fired her. Found another female doc, closer to my age and sadly, not much better. I learned to distrust doctors and endured. Now at 66 I feel strong after taking matters into my own hands. HRT too late for me, I fear. But I celebrate Dr. Mary Claire for kicking the medical and fitness industries in the pants. About f’n time!

In fact, I gained weight and it was fat and cellulite that I didn’t have before. I got worst! I didn’t know any better at the time and so I end up finding out that I had Hashimotos and within the past 5 years going through perimenopause… so less is better! You can’t kill us with an hour and half workout and tons of cardio and expect us to respond. WE WONT! We must work with our hormones and workout accordingly.

You’re eating too little, you’re eating too much, you’re not exercising enough and nothing changed except I went through menopause. It’s so frustrating. I’ve exercised since I was 30 years old and I know how to eat appropriately so I wish they would listen and stop trying to place blame. The title is misleading. "How" do we loose visceral fat during perimenopause? If visceral fat gets worse with hormonal shifts during perimenopause, "how" do we loose it or prevent it from accumulating in excess around our organs?...through bio identical hormone replacement therapy and monitoring of hormone levels or by using birth control? Please clarify. I would prefer something more similar to what my own body produces than birth control provides but during peri the most prescribed hormone therapy is, unfortunately, birth control where most of the progestins mimic testosterone more closely than progesterone and put our bodies in limbo somewhere between being pregnant and in menopause. Birth control shuts down natural production of endogenous hormones over a period of time. No thank you. Such a frustrating topic because there is so little understanding in this area and very few doctors willing to help with something other than birth control during peri. Bio identical hormones can be given to people not biologically female but somehow it's taboo to give them to a woman so she can feel and function well. As a quality of life issue, women need and deserve truly helpful health care options in this area.

Young male personal trainers are the worst people to listen to. Perimenopausal and menopausal women should stay away from them, it’s like they’re not blind, but they’re telling blind people what being blind is like. ‘Cals in cal out, move more, simple!’ No it isn’t that simple, that used to work up until age 45-ish. It does not work at all past 50. I was doing hours of cardio and no weights and had a fat belly and skinny wasted limbs. I only listen to the more mature female fitness and doctors specialising in menopause and are menopausal themselves, and that’s what sorted me out. Low carb, macro counting, weight training, a little bit of HIIT and fasting all work brilliantly for me and I find low carb living easy to do. Keto is hard, but good for a jump start to lose fat weight, but low carb is very manageable for life, for me personally. My doctor is very pleased with my HbA1c now and I’ve been stable and in the good zone for a few years now. 🎉

When I started hormone replacement therapy (estrogen, testosterone, progesterone, and growth peptides) they did a full body scan that recorded my visceral fat. At the start of treatment it was unhealthy high, but after starting HRT, every 3 month check in showed a loss of viscerals fat. Now although I still have some chunk on my lower abdomen, hips, butt and thighs, my visceral fat is very low now. I did not change what I ate ( intermittent fast daily 16/8, clean diet, mostly whole foods and lots of good fats) and I didn't change my workout routine too much, although I have added heavier weights.

Of course, hormones effect BMR and fat storage patterns, but to say that visceral fat storage is "not driven by caloric intake" violates the first law of thermodynamics. The calorie balance equation accounts for hormone changes within the BMR value. You cannot assume that BMR remains steady over time. With hormone changes, BMR may be reduced leading to fat gain if other values in the equation remain steady. Hormones do effect calorie balance, but the calorie balance equation still holds true.

Those personal trainers, especially the men, are teaching the same stuff they taught when I was 20. I could lose ten pounds in two weeks just by walking more back then. Now I gain weight if I even think about stepping on the scale. I was to the point where I was eating next to nothing, starving myself(on purpose thinking I would lose some weight), and working out everyday and I was still gaining weight. But I was weak from no nourishment. So the calories thing is a lie. For women it has more to do with our hormones. I have a high calorie diet but I’m not gaining weight, even without exercise. Nursing my starved (but fat) body back to health and I can’t wait until the fat starts falling off. Ladies, be patient with your body, it’s doing what it’s designed to do. Get help if you need it. And don’t t listen to men that know nothing about female hormones.

Dr Haver, I would love to know how to get rid of my belly fat. I'm 55, post menopausal and have antiphophilipid syndrome and on blood thinners. All of my doctors tell me I cannot have HRT due to risk of blood clots - I've already had 3 PE's make themselves known since 2020. I'm also in Australia. I have also managed to lose 80 lbs over the past year - still have another 80 to go to get to goal weight but if it weren't for my belly fat I'd be 3 sizes smaller. Literally the difference between a 22 and 16. The awesome thing is that I've been working with a nutritionist to correct poor eating habits that arose from severe depression and trying, and failing, to help my autistic partner with their own dietary issues. It all became too much. The up side is that I am now single....and 80 pounds lighter. And my ex partner and I get along very well. We're back to being friends.

I exercise every day in some shape or form I am active and I have a really great diet that is varied, and with lots of different nuts and seeds and yogurt and smoothies and all kinds of really anti-inflammatory things like moringa , maca (u name it) and Quercetin & curcumin supps along with polyphenol drink daily (many things!) because my bloodwork came out positive for auto immune markers. My full regimen has done wonders for my horrendous exhaustion which has improved by a ridiculous percentage. Probably would say 75%!!!!!!!My joint pain is still really bad during ovulation and period time, but has improved other times. But that visceral fat. That’s still there .And I tell you that stuff will not move. I’m also on BHRT. I don’t know at this point I guess It’s just a waiting game for this stupid period To stop and me to go into menopause hopefully all of this will correct itself because the inflammation will go down once my hormones settle.. Do you think that’s accurate doc???

Have you had a body scan done? It might tell you if you need to change the way you exercise etc. Dr. Haver has completely changed her exercise routine based on the learning that she had very low muscle mass even though she was extremely active and fit. It turned out she wasn't lifting heavy enough weights frequently enough. Dr. Haver likes the InBody scans and you can find them throughout the country. I personally found one at a local gym where they let me pay to just come in and get the test done. This link will help you see if there is one near you. inbodyusa.com/support/nearest-testing-location/ You want to make sure that they have the version that measures visceral fat too. ~ XO Community Support Team

Zone 2 training is when you are out of breath but can talk but not sing. The way to calculate your range so you can track on something like a Fitbit or Apple watch is this formula: The calculation is 220 minus age = max heart rate and 65-75% of max is where zone 2 is. So if you are 55 it looks like this: 220 - 55 = 165. 65% of the heart rate is 108 and 75% is 124 so for this age you want to keep your heart rate between 108 and 124 when you are working out for it to be Zone 2. ~ XO Community Support Team

The studies she points to don’t say what she says. I read them. The one she says states that calories-in-calories-out does a disservice to women, says the opposite, with more detail. It says that estrogen modulates appetite and this, with further lifestyle changes (e.g. in diet and movement), likely cause increased weight gain in menopause. The studies do say visceral fat accumulation is common in menopause, and some say estrogen may moderate this to some extent. It’s already known that visceral fat increases CVD risk. Be careful listening to doctors, rather than Registered Dieticians. talk about diet.

How can you measure visceral fat?Are there any specific tests you can do?
@maryclairehavermd8473
@maryclairehavermd8473 2 ай бұрын
You can take a measurement of your waist at it's smallest and your hips and then divide the waist by the hips. If your waist is 36 inches and your hips are 40 you divide 36 by 40 which is .90. You want your number to be less than .85 so in this case .90 is too much and that means your visceral fat levels are probably too high. You can also get an Inbody scan at a local weight loss clinic or gym. Here is a link to find a location near you. inbodyusa.com/support/nearest-testing-location/. You will want to make sure the location has the model that measures visceral fat. ~ XO Community Support Team

Why the trickery? I thought this video would explain how to get rid of visceral fat in a couple of minutes without the one hour waffle, dancing around the subject like we usually get. So now we have to watch a video with more waffle then have to find somewhere in the description the vague answer and have to watch another one hour long video. Why give people the run around? For views? To watch an add? Makes you less credible IMO. Disappointed once again 🙄

I believe I'm in peri-menapause, but there is a chance I will conceive. Could the hormone treatment still be an option for me and how might it affect things? Because I've been pregnant frequently, no Dr will believe that I'm peri-menapausal, and they wont discuss it until I'm neither pregnant, nor breastfeeding. They have told me I can't be heading into menopause if I'm doing either of those things inspight of the fact that my mother had her first menopause related heart attack at about this age.

One size doesn’t fit all. We can try to find out as much as possible about our bodies behaviour during this time and react accordingly. Inflammation is a big topic for me (bowel disease, psoriasis) and blood test readings showing just about every key marker is too low or too high. I’m trying to tackle it mentally and physically. Strength training is always good provided you don’t overdo it. Walking and general movement is excellent (consistent and regular). Increasing water intake and protein, reducing dairy (lactose prevalent) products and any “junk”foods (we all know what these are) plus cutting out caffeine and alcohol are a good start. I’m trying a gentle exercise program, these diet changes and a smaller eating window so that I don’t go to bed full or wired! Sleep is such a restorative component for us. For everyone else who is going through this I’m sending you all my best wishes, it’s not easy.

I’m reading the Galveston diet and when I finish that I’m gonna read the new menopause. My question is; there are a lot of things in the menu for the Galveston diet that I can’t eat (due to health reasons) or won’t eat due to aversion, I know you offer vegetarian options but I don’t see any dairy free options. I’m a pescatarian (so I eat fish and shrimp) but I don’t/can’t do dairy. What can I substitute for the cows milk/goats milk cheeses, cream cheese, Greek yogurt, etc? Will vegan cheeses work or are they not ok? I just want to do this right bc I need it to work. Also if I eliminate the raw onions from some recipes or the celery will that impact my results?
@maryclairehavermd8473
@maryclairehavermd8473 2 ай бұрын
Eliminating the onions will not significantly change the macro value of a meal. The celery might if it is the main part of the dish because it bring fiber to that meal so you would need to look for a substitute with some fiber. You can eliminate the cheese from anything and substitute it with vegan options but it might change the macros. We really want you to learn how to cook for yourself this way so getting a nutrition tracking app is a great way to do that. Dr. Haver uses Cronometer. Here is a link that when you sign up it will populate the macros from the book and also has all the recipes already in the system. cronometer.com/galveston/ Are you part of our online community? Unfortunately we can't legally give individualized medical advice if you are not a patient. What we can tell you is that a hysterectomy is not necessarily a contraindication for HRT.
