Love this post and the prior one.. I've started Fat Biking now about a year ago now and definitely feel and look more fit despite having been weight training for approximately 20yrs. I love the challenge of riding my heavier bike and noticing how my body is getting completely used to everything

Great video! At 48 and weighing 240lbs (feeling miserable about weight) I’ve purchased my first MTB and have been hitting WD every other day for 3 weeks. I’ve lost a few pounds and cardio is better but still gassed after 2.5miles. Thigh muscles are always aching but I’m enjoying the suck! Thank you for the inspiration.

the beginning of this video is the story of my life! I was a rugby player playing professionally when I was 17 until my 23 than I moved to another nation so my life changed. I married I have a daughter and so I got confortable. I was used to weight almost 90 kg and run 100 in almost 12 sec exactly like you, and now I weight 110 kg and I´d like to lose those 10 kg at least. I Quitted smoke since some months and rn I am doing a lot of sports I wish I began before, like kick boxing, climbing running etc. I had a great mtb in the basement and last week I decided to let it repair it. btw when I saw you logo you earned a new subscriber because its exactly the same tatoo i got on my back back in my rugby days

New to mountain bikes. Matter of fact, has been over 20 years since I have been on one. So decided to visit local store, dropped 400 bucks on a starter bike and gonna get broke in. I am 51, ex-military , and ur vid spoke. I too was a beast in my day, could run 2 miles under 11 minutes, and drop some pain on folks when I got there. Parachute accident changed all that in just a few seconds. Now, overweight and soft, my mid life crisis has kicked in and I wanna go back to beast mode. So, gonna follow ur tip and focus on weight loss and endurance first. If the bike I bought can hang, who knows where it will go. But, all that to say, thanks, I am gonna watch the series and see what u have to say and try and change my life. Growing old sux, see if I can get back a little of my youth! Cheers!

I can tell you from personal experience that this video is SPOT ON. Wanna drop weight and get stronger? Ride. Ride your ass off. And, when you feel as if you cannot ride any further…RIDE MORE! Shower. Eat something healthy. Then sleep. Repeat this process for the next 2 months. I dropped 50 lbs doing this. Since then I sustained two injuries during COVID which sidelined me for the last 2 years. I gained it all back plus more. Now that I’ve recovered (sort of), I’m gonna do this all over again - starting a as soon as I press send on this comment. See you boys 2 months (and 60 lbs lighter) from now! While technically you can't lose weight and put on muscle at the same time, there are instances where this is very possible. If you start doing heavy compound movements (Squat, Bench, Deadlift, OHP), you will make super noob gains for at least the first 6m - 1 yr, and lose weight at the same time. The thing is, you must be in a deficit to lose weight regardless. Your muscles will grow and get stronger during this first phase, and it's no different for Mt. Biking, you'll make noob gains in the muscle department. This story reflects me. I used to be 400lbs and started lifting heavy weights (powerlifting type program). I made sure I was in a deficit and I put on lots of strength and lost lots of weight. Now, 5 years later...I've hit a wall. I'm not fat again but I've definitely gained some weight back. I still lift heavy but hate cardio. Just picked up my first mountain bike and have been going out for at least 1hr/day after work and hitting some trails. I'm 4 days in, wow i have DOMS like ive never had. LOVE IT!
@darwinrides1688
@darwinrides1688 5 жыл бұрын
Great to hear! Think of DOMS as your muscles screaming for nutrients ("that's how you know its working...") Consider feeding them (and re-hydrate) with a BCAA mix, as well as simple proteins. Typically BCAAs are zero cal, although there is controversy there... Good Luck!

@darwinrides1688
@darwinrides1688 3 жыл бұрын
Good luck with the goals! The weight is the easy part. Bunny hopping...takes a while to get dialed in. There are a bunch of videos on YT that claim to have it all figured out. While most of those riders do great bunny hops, there are scarce few who can explain what they are 'actually' doing to get their bike off the ground. Step 1: Work on doing 'manuals'. Getting the front wheel up into a low 'manual' position sets the bike up as a lever that you use to launch yourself up into a bunny hop. Not too late to teach an old dog new tricks!

I’m 25 now, 315lbs. Luckily I haven’t gotten any kind of chronic internal issues by being this level of chonk. But the back and knee pain is real, not to mention the terrible sleep. I’m a pretty broad and muscular man, so factoring this in I think I’d be really happy around 230lbs. I don’t really care about the number though, I just want the back and knee pain to subside and start to feel better. It's counter intuitive, but riding may not improve your core strength, by its self; many riders still complain of back pain. Your knees will love you though; my knees have never felt better. For core strength (to fight back pain) try adding planks to your daily routine. Quick, easy(ish), and highly effective. Good Luck!

loosing weight is not just "move more eat less"; it is what you eat and how often you eat.
@darwinrides1688
@darwinrides1688 5 жыл бұрын
Spoiler alert... If you consume fewer calories than you use (daily), you WILL lose weight. It's indisputable, and it really is that simple. However, your body might just hate you for it, and it will try to sabotage your efforts (constantly). So, as you say, paying attention to what you eat, and when you eat it might help you control how much of it you end up eating. However you choose to get there is a very personal choice, but if you manage to move more that you eat, you WILL lose weight. Ultimately, there is no other way. Thanks for taking the time to comment!

I would be lying if I tried to dismiss your fears. It's a question of 'when' rather than 'if' you'll every be thankful that you wore a helmet. I still tend to fall once in a while; we all do. Unless your face is perfect (mine isn't) I wouldn't worry about it too much. I do recommend that you protect your elbows (initially), and your knees. Wear a helmet (please). If you watched the next video in this series, you might have noticed that I'm wearing a different helmet. There is a reason for that... and it wasn't by choice. Good Luck!

How many kms is enough to lose weight ?
@darwinrides1688
@darwinrides1688 3 жыл бұрын
If you're asking how many kilometres you need to ride to lose weight, the answer is zero. All you really need to do is reduce calories. Not so easy though, right? You can accelerate your progress by riding. Ride as many kms as you can fit into your schedule, but make sure you are fully recovered before you go again. Ride too hard or too often and you risk injury. Move more - eat less. Good luck!

The simple solution is to forget about weight altogether and instead ride to reduce body fat, then you eat, ride, build muscle, lose fat all together.... right?
@darwinrides1688

I would agree, however, using that philosophy typically results in weight gain. Weight gain in this case is a good thing, but in the absence of any other way to measure progress, it can be demoralizing. But, you are right!

Lose weight first then improve core strength some ...
@darwinrides1688
@darwinrides1688 4 жыл бұрын
I agree with the 'weight first' concept. 'Core' strength is hard to do on a bike, so it's often overlooked. It's counter intuitive perhaps, but our 'cores' don't get used as much as our legs (or our upper body on MTB trails), yet our core is the platform on which everything else is built. Planks and pushups are a great supplement to our riding. Good luck with whatever goals you choose 'Old Guy'!

@@darwinrides1688 I don't think you understand exactly. Not just fatter but gaining nearly 2 pounds a day. I'm wondering if some ambient electricity from the huge battery being so close to my balls has triggered thyroid issue. I've put on so much weight I can't see my pecker and had to switch to proper downhill rims so I can still Ebike.

Brian, the ‘E’ in EBike could stand for ‘Estrogen’ in your case. The good news is that your pain tolerance might increase, and you can start hitting from the red tees. Good Luck!

@@darwinrides1688 But I have already sunk over $9000 into it and it's not working. Are "red tees" an after market power boost? I replaced my seat with a dildo like the other EMTBers but it's not working, it hurts even more.I looked everywhere on my Ebike but it doesn't say Estrogen anywhere on it. Did I get the wrong EBike. I have the HIV Turbosuck 2 29er by Megadouche from Fakebike.com. What Ebike would you recommend for someone who just wants to pay to look like a real cyclist but is a failure at life? Cheers. Thanks for the help!

Me too! 20+ years of the Queen's English mixed with 20++ years of the American South. These days the heritage is only evident when I get 'animated'.
