00:00 - Sleep Apnea & Weight Loss Introduction
01:10 - Why It's Hard To Loose Weight With Sleep Apnea
02:35 - Treat Your Sleep Apnea, Then Loose Weight
04:00 - Test Yourself For Sleep Apnea
It's true. The majority of people who have sleep apnea are overweight or obese. The more fat tissue we have in our neck, the more pressure it puts on our upper airway especially when we lie flat on our back (supine sleep). People who suffer from sleep apnea really struggle to lose weight for two main reasons. The first is that because our body is stressed and not sleeping well, the hormone cortisol is released which results in our body storing energy, cortisol also makes us crave carbs (not good for weight loss!). The second is that sleep apnea reduces our energy levels and thus the motivation to move and exercise is impaired.
If you suffer from sleep apnea and are wanting to lose weight you first need to treat your sleep apnea! Once you start treating your sleep apnea, you set the wheels in motion for weight loss! With a good night sleep your body will be well rested, your metabolism will improve and you will have more energy for movement / exercise.
Now even if you manage to lose a lot of weight, you might still need some form of therapy to help with your breathing during the night but no matter what the outcome, you will be much better off for many many reasons.

I’ve been overweight pretty much my whole life. For the past 15 years I did shift work. Never had any energy and didn’t sleep much. A year ago I started working day shifts and it hit me hard. I could barely stay awake. Found out I was having 66 episodes on average per hour. The first morning after using my cpap I felt alive. Heart rate and blood pressure have both gone down. Been focusing on eating better and being more active. I’ve lost over 100 lbs in the past six months.

I know not only overweight people have sleep apnea, but thank you for speaking to us about this issue like we’re normal people. My doctor told me to lose weight before I got the cpap machine. I told him I don’t sleep, I have no energy because I don’t sleep. I feel more hungry when I don’t sleep. It was very discouraging. I’ve have my machine for two months now and I’ve lost 15 lbs already!

@@sharoncarpenter2084 Yes, there are few situations like that. But generally speaking, you treat the medical conditions caused by obesity first and then try to work with the patient to lose weight. There is a short-term and long-term strategy to give them the best possible health care. But if you don't deal with these other issues, they may not live long enough to lose the weight. And even if they fail to lose the weight, you will likely extend their lives.

When I got tested, I stopped breathing 98 times in an hour.... scary shit. They hooked me up to the machine a couple of weeks later, while being monitored. The attendee walked in and woke me up. I asked what was wrong. He said nothing. I had slept through the whole night !!! He said that was probably the first night in 20 years that I had rem sleep. I’ve been using it everyday since. I was stuck in this loop for years... CPAP changed my life. I lost weight even though I didn’t actively try to for the first 6 months. I just focused on getting quality sleep and feeling better. Once I started having more energy and my mood and mental health was improved then everything just fell into place. I didn’t know what was wrong for years and I’m glad that I found out. I'm 38 in great shape, work out daily, eat well, not overweight at all. I have apnea that's progressively become worse over the years. I had my testosterone and hormone levels checked because I was so tired and lethargic all the time, couldn't recover from workouts, thought I would need HRT. After my levels came back normal, I did my sleep study and after 5 days on my CPAP, I'm finally understanding what's been wrong all this time. Feeling better each day.

This is exactly what I wanted to hear. I really appreciate it. It was short and simple video. Very comforting to be honest.. I have sleep apnea. I just picked up my machine. I'm not a heavy person but I do think I have a good amount of neck fat. I'm hoping that I can get the sleep apnea kind of put in check with the machine as well as really focus on my diet and exercise. Enough where I can stop using the machine. My biggest problem is I have no energy. I'm constantly tired and they say that I wake up 60 times an hour while sleeping on my back. So when I try to wake up early for the gym before work day and taking care of the baby, it's a lot of work and I'm very tired throughout the day.

@@nickgoogle4525 but its easy to say that people need to just "lose weight". Unfortunately it's not that simple. Sleep apnea can be a vicious cycle where the sleep apnea itself may cause further weight gain due to slowed metabolism. Some people are just lucky to not have the airway anomalies that predispose to OSA
@proveit3836
@proveit3836 3 жыл бұрын
@@nickgoogle4525 its not even as simple as saying "in the vast majority of cases". People who are overweight or obese and have sleep apnea usually have a predisposition to anatomical risk factors for sleep apnea already, extra fat or not. You can see how it's a vicious cycle: person gains maybe a bit of weight one time, sleep apnea is triggered and slows their metabolism even more, causing even more weight gain. It's ultimately a case of the chicken and the egg. We don't know which comes first. I suspect its more complicated than people think. I think its possible in some cases that the OSA _causes_ obesity, then because they gain the weight, this is compounded even more and their apnea gets worse

Dear friend thank you so much. Your advice makes complete sense and as I'm a recently diagnosed sleep apnoea patient and am on a waiting list for my CPAP treatment and in the meantime am due to receive a custom made MAD device within the next few days, I cannot tell you how much your advice means to me. It was literally this year my husband revealed to me that I stop sleeping when I sleep. I had been progressively and rapidly gaining weight and seemingly falling asleep at the drop of a hat especially after a day in the office. I used to say it was like my get up and go just got up and went. I was just becoming like my mum God rest her soul! Just constantly sleepy and just assumed it was just me! But it was when it started getting chronic I realised something wasn't right and my husband saying and very casually saying I stop breathing when I sleep led to my discovering why my sudden rapid weight gain and carb cravings and on and on .. I cannot tell you how grateful I am to have been diagnosed...and I totally agree with your advice..and am determined to get the weight down but truly get now why I found it so hard to get the energy to even walk at times not to mention go to my gym..it all makes sense and you so perfectly explain what OSA does to you. Thank you. I am so grateful to have been diagnosed and my consultant was lovely and told me not to be so hard on myself for my rapid weight gain. She explained what you have articulated so well that my OSA causes that. Bless you. I am desperately want to lose the weight but I agree it will be easier to do once I start using my MAD and treatment starts.

@@billb8744 awesome Bill. guess I should update. Took me a while but I figured out the resmed and now I'd never dare sleep without it. I've been having great sleep. I just had to figure out what works best for me. For me, not ramping up was the Key. I like the mask to go to 10 pressure immediately when I put it on. definitely a life saver and I'm having lots of dreams now.

@@kencunningham3710 Thanks Ken. I've not changed much yet. Now I'm asleep in minutes after a week of Resmed Curve 10 instead of hours or none......LOL. Using stock settings from the doc. Changed a couple but got busted on the stats (Oscar shows me they tattle if I fiddle the settings) so I decided not to fiddle with it until my first doc visit. I did find it a bit drying so I went to manual on the climate and set humidity at 6. Big mistake, turned into swamp/sauna air mode. I totally agree, the ''dude'' is a great guy who's built a great site, I am a big fan. Even after a week I am much more awake, much more energy, more alert and I am finding it easier by the day to get around get some exercise. Not much but it's building fast. Like you, I have no interest in sleeping without my Curve 10 (that is the bipap version of Airsense).

I have struggled with my weight pretty much since my teens (just loose weight, OK yeah that easy ah doc) always trying diet after diet, I was diagnosed last August with Sleep Apnea (62 episodes per hour) it knocked me for six tbh, I'm a shift worker doing the most ridiculous day/night 12 full rotation shift cycle ever which has probably over the last few years only added to my issues. At first after starting with my cpap machine I felt embarrassed and hated it but now after I learned to live with it and embraced the change in me and feel the full beneficial quality of sleep it gave me the changes in my mental health and the energy levels it has helped with too, I feel so much better, I started a calorie deficit diet and in the last 3 months I had lost 32lb... Bit of a blip at the moment on the back of Christmas and winter so I have gained more then I would like but I can completely agree about your video, I have found this balance between sleep apnea and dieting really does go hand in hand, my goal for this year is to try and drop 56lb a big loss but now I believe it is reachable due to the correct treatment. 👍🏻

Thank you for sharing that information. I feel a lot better because I had just recently got diagnosed with sleep apnea. I had some people tell me “it’s because you’ve gained weight you gotta lose that weight before your sleep apnea is addressed”. I’m so relieved that that’s not the case and that the sleep apnea has to be addressed in order for my health to improve.

Thanks, Nick. Just a quick and casual video filmed on your outdoor leather Chesterfield sofa 😂. This one really struck a chord with me, because I've just restart therapy after experiencing very low energy levels. The whole "walk vs nap" calculation? Yeah, that'll be a nap. I need to break that cycle and therapy is certainly one way to enable that.

After about a week on CPAP i have felt full faster, not as hungry throughout the day, and my food cravings have become much stronger for healthier foods. I literally crave a salad full of vegetables daily and iv never had that past 10 years. I wake up with a spring in my step and im literally playing with my cats while getting ready for the day. I would never have the morning energy for my cats without this therapy. Hopefully I will start seeing much more improvements and possible weight loss.

This makes complete sense. I have been trying to lose weight for a long time, and have never had the energy to do so. Even walking with my fiance was tiresome. I just had my sleep study done a couple of weeks ago and went for my results yesterday. Turns out I have severe sleep apnea, but surprisingly my lowest oxygen saturation was 79%, which my doctor said she was surprised it wasn't lower. She also said exactly what you said, that treatment for sleep apnea will help with weight loss. Its hard to lose weight when you are always tired and just don't have the energy. I have a desk job and after my 8 hours of work, the only thing I want to do is just sit on a couch and rest. Its become a horrible cycle that even I know is not good for me, but its hard to break when I have absolutely no energy. I go for my second study with the bipap and cpap machines in a couple of weeks. So I am excited to start the new year with treatment finally after years, maybe 20 years, of having sleep apnea. Thank you for the video and explanation!

Finally had a home test done, 37 episodes an hour. Just got fit yesterday and slept with the ResMed 10. Took it off after about 3 hours, it will take some getting used to. I know I gained weight due to the lack of activity this past year and hope to start losing it again, though I know I had sleep problems before. Getting old and fat is no fun, and knowing I could drop dead any night because my poor sleep is wrecking my body is no fun either. Hoping this is going to help me be around a bit longer.

Hey guys, i also just want to add a little info from my own experience. My personal ideal weight is around 82kg. This is when i feel my best and sleep my best! During covid i added about 6kg (just due to being in lockdown for 4 months of the year and gyms closed and just drinking more etc). This 6kg weight gain had a HUGE impact on my sleep. Sarah (my old lady and better half) was continuously rolling me off my back and nudging me to stop me snoring and i just felt FLAT! I had no motivation, i was waking up tired and getting frustrated and sarah was frustrated and it was just a shit time. I don't have sleep apnea as i'v done plenty of tests on myself being a sleep scientist but that extra 6kg does impact my sleep in a big way, especially my snoring and energy levels. The point i'm trying to make is sometimes just a little bit of weight gain / weight loss can make a big difference! I've had to work really hard to loose just a couple of kg but i can already feel i'm sleeping better and Sarah says that i'm no longer snoring which is great because we have the little baby who is enough of a disturbance as it is without me adding to the drama. Anyway, just want to let you know that you're certainly not alone and millions of people are experiencing the same frustrations so make sure you get your sleep sorted and then you can get motivated to get healthy. Studies have shown that Weight loss of just 10-15% can reduce the severity of sleep apnea by 50%!!!! If you think you or someone you know might have sleep apnea then here's a really quick and easy apnea screen you can do at home - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hJ52gNpkqMuofmQ.html

I have been diagnosed with OSA since September, 2002 (Happy "Anniversary" to me!!!) I was morbidly obese at the time (defined as having a body mass index in excess of 35.0). I had bariatric surgery in December, 2010. I had the following comorbidities: OSA, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol and there are probably some items I overlooked. My cholesterol has resolved as a result of the bariatric surgery. My high blood pressure was resolved for 7 years and the hypertension medication dosage is very low. The one thing that hasn't resolved is my sleep apnea.

I am a retired ICU nurse, so believe me when I say that your CPAP machine can save your life. Patients that go years with uncorrected sleep apnea are many times more liable to have a heart attack, that changes their life forever, if they survive it. Sleep apnea is a terrible stress to your heart. If you can't get any help rom your doctor, please keep exploring helpful videos here for the type of machine you have. You also might want to join the Facebook group for CPAP Reviews. You can at least ask questions of people who use their machines regularly. Good luck and I hope that you machine becomes your new best friend. It is there for you, night after night, doing more to make your life better than many a person would do.

I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea about a month ago. Still waiting on my cpap machine due to the national shortage in the U.S. I’m so excited to be able to get a full nights sleep and have more energy and making it to where I want to be more active. The past couple years I’ve just felt like I’m half asleep all the time.

I've had my bi-pap for a few weeks now and I feel like a champ in the morning now. I used to wake up with headaches and hating myself especially having to go to work, but now I wake up and have so much energy and I'm always in such a good mood. Shits crazy how much this has changed my life so far.

I am also waiting on a CPAP machine since being diagnosed five months ago. I wish I could get it tomorrow, as I'm feeling as if my entire body is under stress all the time! I also suffer from Pulmonary hypertension which is a result of the sleep apnea, so I'm living with a double demon Sleep apnea, I've learned, causes all kinds of other diseases. I'm praying to receive my machine soon.

I'm my biggest fan, I've had sleep apnea for at least ten years. I'm in really good shape, have lots of muscle on me, I'm a fit person & trust me, it has been such a challenge to gain muscle & lose fat without knowing I had sleep apnea, I was just diagnosed like two weeks ago & know I know why I'm not able to cut to low body percentage & why after six years of training I don't look as good as other people, but I've been training tired all this years, with migraines & really really tired 😅 so that's why I'm my biggest fan, I've manage to be in shape even with my terrible health condition. Can't wait to get my cpap & hoping my life improves 🙏🏻

I can’t wait to start with my CPAP. I’m still waiting for the DME to contact me. To contribute to the videos message though, I bottomed out at 195lbs and was still dealing with apnea. I’m 314lbs right now, thanks to anxiety meds keeping me calm enough to actually eat (too much food, granted) and at my lowest, I was RAIL THIN. Not sure weight is always the issue.

Uncle Nicko, thanks for your videos. I appreciate your approach and you gave great, nonjudgmental advice, for those whose sleep apnea is affected by weight. I do wish you had mentioned some sleep apneas are idiopathic, some are secondary, some are obstructive, not from weight but from structural deficiencies, and some are central. Treatments for each vary and all require trial, error, and reevaluation. No single treatment is best for everyone, not even for the same person over the course of time. Bodies and environments change. When I was diagnosed, some 20 years ago, I was in excellent shape, so losing weight would not have had any effect. My diagnosis was complex sleep apnea, a combination of both obstructive and central, lucky me. Obstructive because structures in my neck are too small and central because my brain doesn’t think breathing consistently is necessary, day or night. A dentist, after looking at a 3D image of my jaw and teeth asked me, do you have sleep apnea? I was surprised and responded, why do you ask? He said, you have an unusually small laryngopharynx. I answered, yes, as a matter of fact, I do. Since I hate inconsiderate advice, I’m going to tweak the advice given in that comment and turn it into just grossly oversimplified advice. The best way to treat sleep apnea is just to find the root cause and treat that. Sometimes, no cause will be found. In that case, just be healthy, in shape, and born in a perfect body with all systems functioning perfectly. Simple as that. All you have to do is just choose your parents wisely. 😉
