How To Lower Soil pH Naturally Using Sulfur

Today's 2 minute garden tip shares how to lower soil pH naturally using sulfur. Plants like blueberries, hydrangeas, azaleas, holly, roses and more need acidic soil pH to thrive, and most common garden vegetables like tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, strawberries, squash, and countless others prefer mildly acidic soil. This video teaches how to acidify soil naturally for the long term using elemental sulfur.
Purified sulfur can be purchased in both powder and prill forms. While sulfur powder will break down more quickly, the dust can be harmful to breathe in. I use sulfur prills because they're easily applied with little to no dust. Sulfur is one of the best ways to reduce soil pH for the long-term. Don't settle for less effective products that only make soil more acidic for a short period.

I paid $1.69 for five pounds of Idaho potatoes in January, and let them sprout eyes. I cut them this morning. I have 25 chits drying. They will go in the ground Wednesday. I planted the same type of potato last year, and they outproduced my other potatoes by 3:1.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I had been looking for the exact combination of ingredients to lower my pH of established blueberries. I have heard that you should not try to lower the pH all at once, but a little each month or two as to not burn the roots. Your thoughts? I do use Holly Tone Fertilizer for Acid Loving Plants twice a year in spring and fall. I also hear it would be good to add the fertilizer before the fruit is ripened, since the plant is working so hard to produce. This would give it a little boost for the plant stress. Your thoughts. Great info. I remember when you planted those, glad they are doing so well. There are multiple names for elemental sulfur so you need to know the info when asking at different stores. Soil acidifier is a common one, I recently found a large bag at TSC of elemental sulfur and should be set for life. 😎

They're doing okay. I need to pay more attention to them. I often forget about them being planted in the front like that, so I need to better stay on top of the acidic amendments. If you're comfortable ordering online, I have the sulfur prills linked in the video description for your reference. I've never seen them in-stores. You have to be careful with soil acidifiers, because they don't always use sulfur. They can use cheaper things, so you need to read the ingredients.

Remember its a specific bacteria that breaks down the sulphur. It may take a while for those bacteria to colonise & build up their numbers. You must also kept them constantly fed with sulphur for best results.

That's why the sulfur won't work if your soil temp is too cold. I believe that bacteria is active when soil temps are above 55F.

Talk about timing! Today I just started thinking of supplementing with lime, rock phosphate, and bone meal when I realized my soil is also on the sweet side at 7.0 and that I needed to slightly reduce it instead. I have lots of pine needles to use as mulch here in the Evergreen State, but I’m thinking a lighter sprinkle of sulfur along with the pine needles may be sufficient for my vegetable garden trough. Here’s hoping the garden items I selected via your Amazon storefront has some deals come Prime Days this week.

Pine needles are actually pH neutral and don't acidify the soil. Fresh pine bark is mildly acidic. You can use pine needles in your garden, but I find them hard to use since they have to be removed completely to plant. I'll be sure to scour Amazon and put a list together on my main channel the next two days.

I've added elemental sulphur at the prescribed rate to my lawn just yesterday. I live in a cool grass environment. My local seed/fertilizer dealer recommended to do a fall application to the lawn, dspite being aware that colder weather is well on the way. I would think that though the application may not be effective over the next few months, it should still take effect in the spring. I did point out the issue of cold weather to them. They are agrologists so i took their advice. Any thoughts?

I’ve found throwing sulfur on top of the mulch is just as effective, plus you don’t ruin the network or surface roots by pulling back mulch

The prills don't break down well if they aren't buried. Did you use a powder?

Hello! I can't find the same product by Seed Ranch that you show us on the video, but I looked at the ones you listed as featured in your video. Specifically, the first one has 99.9% sulfur and should be applied one to two weeks before planting. The second one 90% sulfur and is to be applied before planting. Will your application method and schedule (schedule will be tweeked a bit for Zone 8) apply to either of these products? I wish I didn't have to wait before putting in my tomato plants and my strawberry plants; is that important? FYI: I will also be applying the product to two blueberry bushes, some azaleas, and a Sunshine Ligustrum.

Hi, my soil pH is 8.3 in Abilene, Texas. It high alkaline. I need to get it to about neutral at 7 or a little below that . So how much prills will I need? 2 tablespoons? So basically I would need the powder to acidify it a little quicker? How long does that take? Thanks.

On alkaline soils once you lower the pH with sulfur, will the pH rise again after certain number of months or years?. Will it need to be reapplied again after a year, two, three?

All mulch will draw nitrogen away to a degree. It's part of the composting process. But then it releases it back, and more, into the soil as it decays. Surface mulch isn't a problem. Just don't till the mulch into your soil.

Bro I literally just did this yesterday and I didn’t see your video before I did it. I did the same exact thing though. I did 0.25lbs for a 24 sq ft bed. Also I planted a fig tree about 2ft away from my fence line and now I’m worried I should have given it way more space. These are my first “in ground” plants. I got a celest fig and 2 different rabbiteye blue berries. I’m going to get 1 or two more blueberry bushes for this space.

We had a turkey fig tree that grew to be huge within 5-10 years. We started it from a piece taken from my husband's mother's tree, and we never fertilized or pruned it. Eventually, the roots got into the septic tank, and the tree had to be cut down. I would advise moving it while it's small!

I don't think those pH meters work. I've tried a few, and they don't seem to ever change. Even if they did, I wouldn't test them. The only way I know of to get an accurate soil pH reading is to send your soil in for testing. I'm so sorry to hear about your pup 😢 It's not fair how short our time is with them.

People normally use garden lime (calcium carbonate) to raise the pH which will also raise the calcium levels. Also dolomite, which has magnesium in it as well (if your magnesium levels aren’t already high). A soil test would tell you exactly what’s missing, however there’s a cost to that, which might be prohibitive…

For a container, you'd probably want a water soluble fertilizer that lowers pH. Something like MirAcid or water soluble fertilizers "for acid loving plants" works better in containers, because every time it rains they get flushed and the containers poorly hold nutrients.

If you want mild onions, avoid adding sulfur to their bed. Sorry but it's been so long since I saw this info, I don't remember where it's from. I have sulfur but I forget to use it.

Probably should use gloves when coming into contact with skin. Wont kill you but forces you to remember safety protocols and teaches the importance of proper handling for newbies on your channel.
