Instructions by Crandall Office Furniture on how to lubricate some creaky areas around a Steelcase Leap Chair.
Sometimes with use, the Leap chair can develop squeaks and creaks in high friction areas. Thankfully, this routine maintenance is quite easy to perform and can completely change the experience of using your chair. So, we put together a little guide to help you along the road to silent sitting.
Identifying the cause of the creak
1. There are a few suspect areas to be aware of while locating the cause of the noise. Most notably, the reclining tracks at the base of the seat frame and the rotating connective joint holding the back frame to the seat’s arms.
2. The inner frame spring can also generate some noise, although we’d recommend checking this last due to it being harder to access and the risk of over lubrication causing drips and leaks.
Treating the creaks
1. Before actually applying any lubrication, it’s incredibly important to make sure you are using a product that won’t create a mess. We recommend using either WD-40 Quick Dry Silicone spray or a petroleum-based lubricant like Vaseline. Avoid regular WD-40, as this has a high chance of leaking from the chair and causing stains.
2. Once you’ve got your lubricant, try applying some to the aforementioned problem zones. It’s important to note that less is more in this process. Too much lubricant can lead to drips and stains.
3. After applying just a little lubricant to the creaky parts of the chair, recline the chair a few times to spread the lubricant throughout the mechanisms.
4. If the noise persists, check the hardware on the chair, sometimes a loose screw can cause parts to shift causing noise. If all accessible hardware is secured, then re-apply a little lubricant to any remaining suspicious areas.
5. If the noise is persisting, the cause may need further diagnosis. Please send us a video of your chair and we’ll be sure to help you the best we can.

My squeak ended up being a flexed fiberglass insert found in part of the seat itself.

Thanks a ton. This creaking started in the past few weeks and was driving me nuts! I do live webcasts nearly every day. It was annoying. The LONG screwdriver was key. I ended up using a pry bar for auto door panels. But a screwdriver would be better.

Thanks for another great vid. Where I live it would take a month to get WD-40 SILICON. Is it THAT MUCH better than regular flavor WD-40? Thanks!

We just don't recommend WD 40 because it can stain your carpeting. Still would lubricate as needed though

I have similar noise problems on my Gesture. I already tried what you suggested in your other video for that chair, but it did not help. Do you have suggestions for such noise problems as shown in this video but for the Gesture?

What about loud cracking sounds?
@CrandallOfficeFurniture

Loud cracking sounds do not sound like normal operation and likely will not be able to be fixed with this method - this is for minor squeaks and creaks. If you'd like to email us a video of exactly what your chair is doing, we'd be happy to take a peek and see if we can help! :)

No amount of lube seems to stop the noise on mines. It's more of a 'thud' than a creak. Particularly when I recline 'thud' then when I unrecline 'thud' again.

Hi, I have an issue where every time I sit down and stand up on my leap v2, it makes a lot of noise on what I believe to be the cylinder(a low rumbling noise as it moves up and down). I wiped off this brown stuff which I think was a mistake because I think that was part of the lube and it made it even noisier when I put wd40 instead. Is there something else I should be using?
@CrandallOfficeFurniture
@CrandallOfficeFurniture 2 жыл бұрын
We typically do not use standard WD40 - it tends to flash off and drip everywhere. We would recommend trying a dry-lube. We use WD40 Silicone Dry Lube.

isn't it better to use Ballistol? this does not remove any softeners from the plastic, such as wd40
@CrandallOfficeFurniture
@CrandallOfficeFurniture Жыл бұрын
We are unfamiliar with that product but will definitely check into it, thank you for the suggestion. the WD40 Silicone that we use is a different product and shouldn't remove any softeners.
@eugenkeller
@eugenkeller Жыл бұрын
"default" WD 40 is removing grease and oils and is very bad for lubrication as it does the opposite, it cleans and should be applied BEFORE fresh lubrication, also bad for plastics. Silicone spray is for plastics/metals. "WD 40" is misleading and irrelevant.
