In this video, I show you how to lunge a horse. I show you the way I do it and tell you why I do what I do. It is not the "classical" way to lunge but it works for me and my horses. I have a few horse lunging tips and if you are looking for a lunging for beginners video this video should give you some lunging tips to get you started. Lunging a horse is done for many reasons and I explain a few of them to you. The skill of lunging a horse should certainly be a part of your basic horse training.

Thanks Josie, I really appreciate your approach and manner. I am recovering from brain trauma from taking part in a 3 Day Mountain Bike Race in 2018. We moved onto a property with acreage enabling me to getmy beautiful mare. She was being used by the leaders in a Trail Riding Company prior to me buying her. Although she was a young TB (4yr old) she was a laid back plodder and won my instantly. Owing to my healing I haven’t been able to do as much as I wanted but have an ex jockey as a neighbor who helps me out. Love your teaching, thanks a bunch 👍🐎.

@@BasicHorseTraining I love that you allow them to be horses! Sounds like so many people won’t see you to never “miss behave“ but personally, I love seeing horses that are feeling fresh, frisky & full of it! Obviously, there’s a time in a place for this. Apparently, it’s in your videos LOL that one thumbnail just cracks me up! All your horses are so well behaved, so on the rare occasion they spook or crow-hop or whatever, it makes me smile 😃 I love hearing you chuckle at them too 😆

I was taught in the beginning that I had to “control” everything and the horses had to be robots but it never sat well with me. When I had enough confidence to start to think for myself I realised that I didn’t have to control everything. From there I started to enjoy my journey with horses. Before then it always felt “wrong”. I always asked myself “why can’t a horse be a horse” and never found a reason why they couldn’t be.

Thx Josie for sharing 😊. I always use a cavesson (similar to your serrata), the main advantage is being able to position the horse's head by applying LIGHT pressure on the nose and so avoiding unhealthy movement patterns (i.e. turning their head to the outside). As you mentioned, I'd never lunge a horse by attaching the lunge line to their bit (unfortunately still common practice).

Much more finesse with a cavesson/serreta isn't there 😃

I am training a gaited yearling and I am struggling with helping her find her balance. Especially on the lunge line. Any ideas or resources I can use? Thanks!

Hello! I love your videos but I have a question, I’m currently training my own horse and he’s still pretty green but I’ve been trying to teach him to lunge but I don’t think he quite understands. I try to get him to move forward by tapping him on the butt until he moves I remove the pressure, I’ve been trying this for awhile now and he still doesn’t seem to get what he’s supposed to do? I’ve been doing a lot of ground work with him recently and really want to teach him how to lunge, hoping you can maybe give me some tips on ways I can get him to understand the concept of lunging? Thank you :)

That depends on what country you live in Cherie. artisantack.com/product/deluxe-leather-lunging-cavesson/ www.dancinghorse.com.au/shop/saddlery/lunging-equipment/spanish-cavesson/ Here are a couple of suggestions. I googled it and found some that I liked then checked on the credentials of where I bought it from. Mine was somewhere in Spain I think but I can't find it to share with you sorry.

Probably safest to choose a grip that means if the horse does a surprise yank, you don't break off your finger. Maybe your horse is a 100 percent good boy but a lot of horses are not.

Hey Jenna! How is you baby coming along? It's called a Serreta and I will see if I can find you a link. Just make sure you get one with the strap that keeps the cheekpiece out of the eye. This is a 3-ring one and I think it is located in the US (where if I remember correctly you are too) www.darkhorsesaddlery.ca/index.php/spanish-portuguese-working-equitation/spanish-working-equitation-portuguese/item/0067-tradtional-working-serreta?category_id=73

This looks all well and good for a horse that knows what to do to follow your cues and body language, but you haven't touched on how to teach this to your horse. ie. What to do if your horse doesn't walk out on the circle or walks in close to you. How to start from scratch.

Hi Tamara, How to lunge a horse is a course in itself and beyond the realms of a quick KZfaq video. I will be addressing that and many other issues in my membership and I will be using "untrained" horses. If that is something that you think you would be interested in just add your email to the waitlist. I would love to have you there 👉 www.bht.horse/academywaitlist
