Thank You Brian!! A local shop wanted to charge me $800 to replace fuel pump on my 2005 Chrysler Town and Country, something I could do on my own but lift I had use of was down for a week. It took them 5 days to even look at it and all I was told was they "tinkered" with it. Never put on a lift! I didn't want to spend $800 for a van that cost us $1,500 to buy 2 years ago and had the pump already that cost me only $45. They wouldn't use my part either. So I went over and used the by-pass relay, whacked the tank 3 times and it spun right up! I changed back the relay, got into van, waved goodbye and drove it to the lift I had use of. You Sir saved me $800 and the pounding headache I would have endured from the wife. Love this video and ALL the tricks you do!

I didn't want to give you a thumbs up. I wanted to give you a gold star. I have a processing issue with learning. I never understand until I get right into it and do it myself. You having the dissection of the pump and the theory of banging to close the air gap really brought the entire video together for me. And if you think being a 1 man crew can be a little hassle try being a 1 woman crew.

Thanks so much mate, I live 20kms from the nearest town about 2hrs from Melbourne Australia and my truck(Ute) wouldn’t start on Friday, and I thought it was the spark plugs, cos I’m no mechanic or mechanical, but after a lot of KZfaq videos and finding the sharper valve, It was/is my fuel pump, I just tapped the fuel tank with a rubber mallet, and magically my Ute started right up, what a relief cos I was looking at having to have it towed to a mechanic, now I can drive it 90mins to my cousin’s place as he is a mechanic and is not going to charge me like a wounded bull. I know I’m long winded 😂. But I just subscribed thank you so much. Hope you stay safe and healthy there in the US. Cheers mate. Jacques

My Mazda 121 'Bubble' 1992 (yes 92) ran out of fuel and after putting some fuel in wouldnt start. fuses looked good and it had been 6 years since last fuel pump was replaced. I tried starting it many times. I tapped under the petrol tank in the central area with a hammer (without denting) where the pump would be and then turned the ignition and it started! So far its running smoothly but its only one day ago. I didnt use any wire to bypass any relay.

My Saab 900 is pretty interesting, and by interesting I mean over the top... it has THREE FUEL PUMPS. Two of them are basically fish pond pumps, very slow to move fuel. It has a segmented gas tank, there's a partition in the middle, and the first fuel pump is a fish pond pump that moves fuel to the second half of the tank. The second pump is another slow pump moving the fuel from the second half to a small "bucket" that houses the real fuel pump, and the "bucket" is connected to the fuel rail. Whatever fuel the fuel doesn't use I believe gets dumped back into the first half of the tank to keep the gas even in the two halves. I've been told this is because the tank design used to starve the fuel pump when carving through mountain roads, so rather than change the design of the tank they just added extra fuel pumps LOL.

Sounds about right. It also sounds like it keep the weight of the tanks even too. Most diesel trucks have a similar design, but with on fewer tanks.

I have just changed the fuel pump itself, as the owner was not able to afford a whole unit. got him to do most of the work and only had to pull the pump out of the housing and solder the new wires to it ( generic pump) and put it back in the housing. He was doing the messy work with fuel hoses and pulling it out from the back seat. 20 minutes of work and a working GM car again. Old one was at around the 15 year mark, pretty good life.

Ty very much for this!!! Ive always looked into ways of doing Preventative maintenance or servicing things because it helps me learn more on how everything works. I've done on all my appliances and now my vehicle since I own a Ford now. I've recently started to hear a new whinning noise coming from my fuel pump when the AC is on. It stalls at idle sometimes too. Of course its has built in filter, so I'm going give it an ole girrlll scot try and see how it goes 😂 Im a handyman by choice and trade so hoping I don't break any cheap azz plastic pieces that are important, like I've done every other damn time I've worked on this engineered masterpiece

The top of the pump usually has a check valve as well that keeps fuel primed in the system. This was bad in our Ford Ranger and it would loose pressure the second the key was turned off. We learned how to time it so we could start it again.

My wife's car had a bypass valve go bad, but I just opted to change the whole thing. I didn't want to drop her tank and risk it going bad again in 10,000 miles (her car had 110,000 on it, and that particular pump is known to go anywhere from 100,000-150,000). I thought about just changing the valves, but knowing it's an electric motor with that many miles on it I just couldn't.

One thing I've found on the in tank electric fuel pumps is that those people who only keep a minimal amount of gas/fuel in their tanks, and buy their gas at the cheapest place around usually are the ones who need to replace their fuel pumps the most..Probably due to lack of cooling(the fuel is the cooling agent for in tank pumps,as well as the lubricant),and the gas they're putting into their tanks 5 bux at a time usually is not filtered properly which winds up with more water, and trash in their tanks from what I've seen, and determined from cleaning the tanks out...

Neil Williams maybe maybe not. In many places the trucks that service the stations get all their gas right out of the same pipe at the fuel rack at the terminal. Here locally from. Montreal they are labeled EXON and OTHER. exon has their own pipeline so want their own gas for whatever reason. ALL THE OTHER stations get generic . That gas goes to all the stations in the region to include Norther US cities. It’s been that way for decades. So there’s no tiger in the tank unless they add it after he gets to the station or the truck depending. The last I knew even the alcohol in the gasoline until it goes in the truck. The driver puts in whatever quantity for 90% gasoline and adds the quantity to get 10% alcohol that’s about the size of it.

@neroaugustus5378 true as some unscrupulous people actually add straight water to their tanks. After all 100 gallons of water in a 3k gallon tank isn't really all that much water per se,but it is an extra 100x the cost per gallon sold which at 3bux a gallon =$300 pure extra profit and no one is the wiser except how their vehicles perform with more h2o per gallon than usual

I had my 98 Windstar stall on me. On the side of the road, I took a piece of wire, pulled the fuel pump relay, jumped the circuit making it hot with the key on. I was able to hit the tank and make the pump run. Hit it again and make it stop! I took that pump apart like you did! Great minds take the same stuff apart! Fun stuff! Another thing that causes fuel pumps to fail is broken wires where they go through the tank. The wire wiggles, work hardens, and breaks. That can cause the fuel pump to work intermittently also. The fuel gauge can also be effective too. Oh, put some lube on the hinges of that truck!

So then to truly bring it back to life then you could close the air gap by soldering a nub on top of all the copper contacts on top and test fit it against the brushes and then proceed to file if needed. Your time spent rebuilding one costs nothing. So for those of you looking to save a lot of money I would suggest rebuilding it. If possible. I'm gonna try to on mine. I have an 04 Trailblazer. A few months ago I was picking up my daughter from school. I turned off the car, about 3 minutes later she came out and I tried to start the car and it was literally nothing. I had just filled the gas tank right before driving the mile to her school. AAA tow truck driver said he believes it is the fuel pump completely dead. Is there any way to temporarily make it work just to see if it’s actually the problem? New battery, didn’t respond to jump-at all. And, is that typical? The fuel pump works one day and then they just die and that’s it?

Banging on the pump doesn't always work. Throw a plastic flex hose on an air gun, clamp it down, send it down as far as you can, turn the key to accessory to power the pump and then blast the system with 100 psi. It'll create a strong enough water hammer to spin the pump free.

I used that dummy relay to get my sister back to the shop without a tow. Problems I have been finding exp with the dodge pumps I'd the fuel control module on R arm has been burning out and courting all kinds of havox with the gas gauge from overheating. It seems to burn first the causes the pump to go. I know oriellys has now gone back to there Lifetime warrantee on the Pricesions pumps after all the Airtex units kept failing. If you have an Airtex pump keep the tank at least half full or you will burn the sending unit out. My 98 went through 4 Airtek pimps before I switched to the Precision brand and have had no trouble since.

If the relay is good, it is sending power to the pump. This "jumper" does nothing different ????? You could make a tape pull cord to easily remove this "jumper" and to help identity it as such, for future reference.

I enjoy your content. Sir, does my 2005 GMC Yukon XL have a fuel regulator? My VIN# 1GKEC16Z75J154574 with 240k miles original pump. I can't find one. My fuel pressure reads 50lbs when running. Reads 25lbs with just the Key on but steadily declines to 0. My problem is engine turns over but doesn't crank until the 2nd or 3rd crank attempt. I thank you very much for your help .

You could wrap a piece of electrical tape inside your makeshift switch to hold it closed

Hey I have a 02 grand am GT. I installed a new acdelco fuel pump and filter. I hear my new pump running and even took line loose before filter. I'm getting weak pressure and sometimes none. I put 4 gallons of gas from dry empty. Idk if that's enough to prime it or I pinched a hose or could the pump be weak. Idk were to go from here.

That happened to me and I dropped the tank again and the fuel lines were crimped. They were made of something that felt more like plastic than rubber. They crimped really easy from the slightest bend. I zip tied them in place. I think the fuel pressure gives them rigidity but when they are empty they are sensitive to crimping, just like a fireman's hose. This was on a 92 Taurus.

Well it's a year later- a lot has happened since then. How'd it go? For those reading comments- my advice would be to double check the pump install for loose hoses or the pump not sitting in the tank right or a kinked line between the sending unit and leaving the tank.

Cool. But pretty sure for this truck fuel pump turns on when ignition is ON, no need for the other relay to give it power
@briansmobile1

It does, but only for a couple seconds. By the time you got to the tank and banged on it, it's power cycle would end. The worst part is that you can't hear or sense when the power stops so you'd bang on in vain. You'd be fine with two people, but with the jumper relay you get as much time as you need to bang on the tank while there's power to it.
