Very good stuff. I learned from my gunnery sergeant that you should always brush cracks off with a polishing brush before doing anything else. It removes any small flecks of dirt or pieces of polish that would otherwise destroy the surface once you start reshining.

I wear my Allen Edmunds every day at work. Thanks to be introduced to Saphir products I've found using the regular polish followed by the mirror gloss weekly the shine does not crack or fade, I condition monthly. Scuffs seem to disappear with this maintenance. I've mentioned it before, I lift door stops at work a lot and these scuffs disappear quickly and don't go deep at all. Saphir is really amazing. I don't have any trouble with cracking and I do not alternate with other shoes, it is my daily pair which is of calf skin. Thank you for helping this workaholic maintain his shoes...

I always fix the area which exposed the pore structure with a lot of wax. Filling up that area, let it dry of few minutes and rub it with fast back and forward motion. The heat of ur finger can melt the wax and flatten the surface to recover the mirror shine. It can save a lot of time of redoing the mirror shine from beginning.

Hi Kirby. Nice series. I learned mirror shines from my dad, 36 years in US Army and my own stint in ROTC. I still admire a nice shine and the protection for the shoe. I stumbled on a technique years ago wondered if you have ever heard of this... using women’s nylons to do a light buff to mirror shines. It keeps the layer smooth, thin, and shiny. My experience is much less cracking and easy touch up. I found this technique means I seldom have to go down to the leather and rebuild the base. Give it a try and let me know what you think. It is won’t be as good as your chamois, but it gets you to 98% in much less time.

Great video. I have a pair of 806b Loakes and some of their own brand was polish. I've tried using water, but have found that the resistance is too great. I've now bought some mirror gloss and have been told not to use a brush for application. I have a soft cloth, but I've also been told cotton wool is good too - with water. So many useful hints, but it leaves me confused. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I truly appreciate this series. You really helped me get started on my shoe shining journey. I've gone with the full presidential shine and mirror gloss for my shoes. However, when taking them out in the rain, I notice that water will darken them, and then when it dries I get water spots all over them. I thought that adding these wax layers would help water proof them. They look nasty after just one rainy day. Where have I gone wrong, and what can I do to correct this without fully stripping them each rain shower? Using both a shammy or horse hair brush on them seems to remove too much product by the time it gets the spots out. Thanks so much!

I'm actually a casual wear type of guy, but I've been working on upgrading my style lately, as I'm close to graduating college. So right now I'm wearing some pretty casual boots, I have a pair of Iron Rangers from Red Wing Shoes and a pair of Wolverine 1000 Mile Boots. I plan to get some really nice Chukka boots soon, probably from Allen Edmonds or another company around that price range, maybe Paul Evans. But before that, I'll be getting a nice pair of dress shoes from one of those two brands, so that's more or less what brought me to this video.

Kirby, I haven't been subscribed for long, but I have already learned so much! Thanks for providing such an excellent source of information. I had a question if you don't mind me asking - if I had a pair of plain vegetable tanned boots or shoes (or belts or bags), is there a good way to develop a patina (and/or darkening) on them without damaging the leather? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

The best thing you can do is just polish them with a darker shoe polish. It'll naturally begin to develop a patina in these areas.

this comes at a great timing since you and i were just recently talking about the mirror shine in the comment section a week or two ago. what's interesting to me is that in the video, you seem to be putting the wax directly on the shoe cream without buffing off the latter once it's dried. i would have thought buffing the dried shoe cream before applying the wax on top would have been better, so i'm curious to know why it's not.

Hi Kirby. Thank you for your videos. The presidential shine is quite something! I love it. One question: after buffing the mirror glacage in the toe box of my some of my shoes i notice that certain spots of the toe box become dull and even have a certain rough look but the funny thing is that the rest of the toe box gets a beautiful mirror shine finishing. Any ideas of why that is or how to fix it? (This has happened on some luxury shoes such as ferragamo). Thank you in advance.

Using too much water while applying hard wax can cause this. Happend to my grain leather shoes. The leather seemed to absorb excess water, which in turn interferes in wax layers structure. Buffing that area will help.

Hello Kirby, Can you provide an explanation of the difference in Saphir Medaille polishes, and the standard blue lid Saphir polishes? Thanks!
@kirbyallison
@kirbyallison 6 жыл бұрын
The Saphir Beauty Cuir (SBC, as I call it, or their standard blue label), is a good polish. It is definitely better than all of other polishes we used in this video. It contains high-quality waxes and uses natural solvents. However, the difference between the SBC and the MDO is in quality, concentration, and variety of waxes, ingredients. Saphir Medaille d'Or contains a different and higher concentration of hard and soft waxes, which is why you get an easier, higher shine than in the Beauty Cuir. It also contains a higher concentration and quality of pigments, which produces better recoloring and restoration of the finish. And there is a "huge difference" in the waxes you are using in the Saphir Pommadier MDO vs. SBC. The Saphir SBC uses almond oil vs the shea butter in the Medaille d’Or. Combined with the unique combination of the other waxes, the Saphir Medaille d'Or is a much better nourishing polish and produces a higher-quality, longer-lasting shine. Lower quantity of beeswax in the Medaille d’Or vs. vegetable saxes, which produce better nourishing. MDO contains carnuba wax (I'm spelling this incorrectly), which is a harder wax that produces a higher shine. Tons of differences... is the Saphir Beauty Cuir good? Yes. Is it better than the Saphir Medaille d'Or? No.

I have been searching and seen several different answers but would really like your input on how to remove / fix . Hello Kirby - what do you think about using lighter quickly glaze the polish and then buff as they show on some more old-fashioned videos? Frankly I’m a bit apprehensive about doing it to $$$$ shoes - but some really believe that’s a way to go. Thank you - Konstantin
@kirbyallison

I think it's unnecessary. Instead of a lighter - which could burn the leather - you can use a hairdryer to the same effect without having to worry about killing a pair of shoes. We're actually going to film this video tomorrow. All it does is help the wax melt into the pores faster in order to saturate them.

@dukes1971

This works for me: Damp cloth, very little neutral mirror gloss polish (remember, "less is more"), apply to shoe, add 2 or 3 drops of water to the shoe, buff with a clean section of cloth just until the fogging disappears. Repeat a minimum of 8-10 times per shoe (alternate every 4 or 5 applications). I haven't needed to go over this at the end with the Pate de Luxe wax polish to "glaze" the shine but if you haven't tried that, give it a go.

Rod WMS. Kirby may have covered this in a different video, but when we shine customers shoes, or our own, we concentrate the mirror shine on the toes and the heel area. You want to avoid putting wax on the vamp. You can put a very light coat or two on the sides, but I wouldn’t do much. We have customers bring shoes into our shop that have been caked in wax all over, and it just feels awful and does not look as nice. Our opinion. 😉

This is just a natural creasing of the leather. It is unavoidable. The effect is a little more noticeable on suede than leather because the nap of the suede gets matted down and doesn't reflect light the same way as the rest of the shoe. Wouldn't worry about it, though. Brushing is the best thing you can do.

Arnold Arnoldsson Its just that. There is seam. Instead, a single piece of leather is stretched over the top of the last. The top is the cut out of the center. It is incredibly difficult - the most difficult “pattern” to make, if you will.

What about Renovateur? How often is necessary to clean the shoes and apply Renovateur again?
@kirbyallison
@kirbyallison 6 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't recommend using the Renovateur for the maintenance of a mirror shine. Because of all of the hard waxes, it wouldn't be absorbed into the leather. Now, when you strip the mirror shine using the Reno'Mat, it is a great time to condition the leather using the Saphir Reno'Mat.

I didn't mean to apply Renovateur on the top of the polish. I'm asking how often it's necessary to remove the polish and clean the shoes in order to apply the Renovateur and start from the beginning.

Where can I find a pair of high quality dress shoes for less $100?
@kirbyallison
@kirbyallison 6 жыл бұрын
something used on eBay? It's impossible to really find anything of quality new for $100. It's just the unfortunate truth. It's not to say you can't find stuff for that price point, but none of the components are going to be super high quality.

Great video, but could you turn down the background music a bit? I find it distracting. Thank you.

Small little cracks don’t matter. No one is gonna be close enough to see them. Just maintain clean shoes.

Very polished ... and not just the shoes, but yourself and the presentation. Call me hypercritical, but I do wish you would eliminate "eye-muh-nuh" from your otherwise polished vocabulary. The "eye-muh-nuh show you how" or "eye-muh-nuh use" such-and-such product just doesn't measure up to the classiness of the site. "I'm going to," or "I'd like to," or anything else would be an improvement.
